Just wondering if anyone has done this?

Hear me out, reason I ask is there is a Very cheap low mileage Engine and transmission from a Salvage car with wiring ancillary's available. So Im wondering if it would be a simple case of pulling out the Gen II engine and trans and fitting in the Gen 3 for added Fun?

Are the engine mounts the same, would there be any issue with engine height (fitting under a gen II hood and window cowl)
Would the wiring be an issue to get it to work with the rest of the gen II stuff?

Wiring and electrical will be the biggest obstacle and it will be a big one. It's not really worth it. The engine will physically fit into the car though.

I agree. If I were to do the swap, I would not settle for anything less than a Gen 4 motor/trans. At least you are getting 150hp more. Not worth the effort for Gen 3, let alone getting all the electrical components to agree with one another. You would be better served doing heads/cam/headers on yours and would gain much more than the 50hp you get going to the Gen 3.

Seriously though, Couldn't you use the entire running gear and computers from a RAM SRT10?

IIRC, Ryan from Don Scharf is doing just that. He bought the car with no front body panels and engineless for $4K, and hopes to have it all together and painted for under $15K.

That will be awesome. Should have a nice bubble on the hood when it is done. :D

Ryan has A LOT more access to parts than anyone else. Still the chassis will need some modifications form my understanding

Oh well, never mind....my reason for asking was due to this thread...

Ade our UK president already has engineered Gen 3 heads on his Gen II Engine, so I was thinking hell, why not go all the way :) If the price is right, it would have got the car up and running quickly then he could relax a bit and get the other engine repairs done in his own time? We need to get Ade's car back up and running well as we have two trips to Le mans in June and July and Driving the Top Gear track between events.

Even better, swap to a 2 or 3 rotor wankel. Talk about how crazy folks would get. Largest displacement motor to one of the smallest, not to mention zero torque and a super high redline. People complain about the exhaust note of the Viper. Probably the most annoying and terrible sounding exhaust on any combustion engine, the rotary. Hell, as small as those motors are, you could weld a couple of them together and have a 4 or 6 rotor with a big hair dryer underhood.

The Gen 3 engine has crappy rod and main bearings besides the Hypereutetic/cast pistons. The Gen 3 rockers are 1.7 to 1 as compared to the 1.6 to 1 rockers in a Gen 2. The heads are slightly better than Gen 2, but the power steering pump attachment is only on the Gen 2 heads so welding required there. Temp sensor also different between the heads. Intake manifold is a power loss. The Gen 2 engine (up to 1999) is a better engine although it is slightly less hp. air filter and air box, 1.7 rockers with headers and exhaust system should more than catch the Gen 3s power difference. Gen 2 has Cleavite bearings, 708 cam, forged pistons and the better intake manifold with dual TBs as better equipment for performance.

Why on earth did you do that? One other thing I noticed is the 998 Frame recall has not been done on that car, What year is it?

I am Ryan from Scharfs!
but yeah, no drive train, 4k,
only frame mod, http://i1288.photobucket.com/albums/b486/ryans13/Facebook/2012%20Project%20LSVIPER%201999%20Dodge%20Viper%20 GTS/178116_10151634612251329_2098286296_o.jpg one per side. the local dodge dealer will not give me the recall kit, nor install it, said i have to take it to another dealer. but i'll make the kit my self, i wanted to add a under tray and spilter brackets under the car anyways.

it will be vary easy to go back to v10 if i get one.
