View Full Version : Sidewinder 2 wheels on an ACR
I looking for some input on the ability of my Sidewinder 2 wheels ability to handle the downforce of the ACR aero package. I have a set of Hoosier R7’s mounted on them and have concerns of wheel breakage.
I do have a set of the OEM venom wheels (ACR wheels but 18” fronts) that I am going to mount my next set of track tires on should I pull the tires off the Sidewinders and put them on the other wheels? Or should I be fine for one life cycle on the SW’s ? Anyone know the weight rating of the different wheels?
Thanks for any help

Yes they will handle the downforce, like honestly most other wheels, semi expensive wheels.

A lot of other stuff will break before the wheels do- especially oem wheels (aren’t they forged too?). Your suspension mounting points will prob fail before a wheel cracks from weight.
Wheels usually fail due to impact. Going 80mph and hitting curbing or something. I’ve never seen a wheel crack because of weight.

Considerations:
Is that for mounting to a true G5 ACR? Or to a NON ACR with aero? ACR Brake Size Matters. True ACR suspension is 300% Beefier thanh a TA 1.0 as shown.
TRUE ACR-E ????
SW2 Wheels are 18-19" {In Stock at PartsRack)
ACR wheels are 19-19" {In Stock at PartsRack)
Before you buy 18" front SW2 wheels, I want all to be sure NOT for an ACR-E...wont fit!
Team Viper engineers, [mostly E.H.] did a LOT of wheel-tire development work to be safe at speed. I have video of him breaking 200 MPH in a Viper. SRT went with stronger, heavier wheels on ACR-E for +Reasons, but NOT for TA2.0.

My personal experience with the SW2 with Toyo R888R and CORSA has not been confidence inspiring. Slight off track events led to the inner barrel bending on multiple occurrences. During repair I spoke to the wheel repair technician, who indicated he was surprised how easy it was to bend the barrel back. This to me, confirmed my suspicion that the wheel was designed to be light at the cost of durability.
You want to ask yourself, do you believe the Viper team would spec a heavy wheel on the ACR-E if the SW2 was adequate under long term use?

Sidewinder II Ultra is the full nomenclature of the wheel. The "Ultra" means Ultra-LIGHT. It does NOT take much of a pothole, parking curb, or even an FIA-Curb hit to bend SW2, or G2 ACR BBS for that matter, the lightest Viper wheel.
Not to mention: Fronts WONT FIT !
The title of this thread from OP is 'SW2 Wheels On an ACR', We Can only assume G5 ACR, avatar is G5, forum is G5

One day while at the track, I started to have front end shimmy everytime I got over 120mph.
Had my tire guy to rebalance the wheel but still got front end shimmy over 130 mph now. The driver front wheel was bent out of round, so I was advised not to try a repair, and ordered a new wheel from JonB.
Never noticed hitting a serious pothole before or any thing out of the ordinary at the track, so yes SW2 are very light, but not the strongest.
I have a 2014 TA that now has the full ACR aero package. It still has the TA brakes. I already own the SW2 as well as the Venom wheels 18” fronts and 19” rears with both sets. I am trying to determine if I can track it with the SW2 or just use the venoms. The SW are 9 lbs. lighter with the R7 mounted than the Venom with Perrelli P zero Corsa’s . My question is can the SW handle one life cycle with the hoouisers or should I switch them over and only use my SW2 for street use
Thanks

Here are pictures to clear up things this is what I’m referring to as Venom wheels

Dennis, are you driving to the track in the TA/ACR or will be using a trailer. If you're driving to the track with the SW2/R7, take it easy on the track run at 8/10 and avoid any off track excursions if possible.
If you trailer, carry both sets, use the SW2/R7 and swap to the Venom if you encounter a problem.
I do trailer to the track however the Perelli’s are getting a little too old for track use. My plan was to put the track tires on the venoms and save the SW for the street (or back up) but because of the shortage of Toyo’s (or even the new Continentals ) I ended putting the R7 on the SW’s. I didn’t give any thought about the extra force on the wheels until after the fact. I’m probably making a mistake not making the switch ,it’s a lot cheaper swapping tires rather than buying new wheels. I was having hopeful thoughts that someone else may have run the SW wheels without problems.
Thank you for the advise

Hawk, Forgeline makes a Viper wheel that clears the ACR 6-piston setup and larger rotors in 18". They are close to the weight of the SWII. I'd go that route, even if you go 19s front, its still lighter than the ACR wheels. Probably stronger too.

I can tell you from experience the GTD1 is NOT stronger than the OE ACR wheel.
The GTD1 load rating is

Hmm, thats good to know. For the GS1R-6, I wonder how true this 2100lb load rating: https://forgeline.com/wheel/gs1r-6
For me I'd probably go with Forgeline still even though I hated my 3-piece experience with them. Just going to keep it simple when it comes to wheels, 1 piece!

Serpent You are correct, but I dont think Hawk actually has a true G5 ACR.... no 6-piston big front CCBs.....
