View Full Version : Avoiding traffic camera tickets
Been recently plagued with these while driving the family car. A few for getting caught in an intersection while light is red and a few for 36 mph in a 25 mph zone. They don't add points, but they do cost $!
Has anyone had a positive experience with any license plate covers or "reflective" sprays that defeat traffic camera photos?

City, just move on out to Nebraska , we don't have any cameras, at least ones that cause tickets, etc.!!
There do monitor intersections in case of an accident, but when it comes to radar, tickets, etc. you are free and clear.

What's the Intersection Red light rules? Can you still turn Right on a Red Light?
We are not allowed to do that in the UK. I think if you add sprays etc and you are caught they will give you a good Woopin! :t0135:

The Reflective sprays won't work. I have seen at the SEMA Show a plate cover that's clear and when you flip a switch it will obscure it.

Yeah it's basically privacy glass that's cut and customized as a license plate cover.

I have just ignored any citation that I have received through any speed camera or red light camera. First, we have a right to know our accuser. Second, the state can not prove that they have served you a citation when they mail it through the USPS. When a police officer gives you a ticket, you sign acknowledging that you have received it. I am not your lawyer, so take my advice for what it is worth. I have ignored about 3 of these over the years. Nothing has ever come of it.

That’s not necessarily true. You get asked to sign the infraction ticket. If you refuse, it’s just noted in the signature line that you refused to sign and you get handed the ticket anyway. If it’s a summons and you refuse to sign you get taken into custody. Your suspension notice may get lost in the mail, but good luck ignoring them.

I have been pulled over and given a speeding citation from an officer after I have ignored these camera tickets. Nothing has ever come if it. I have never received any “summons” after ignoring a camera citation. I also have never received a suspension notice in the mail either.

I could be wrong but I think here in NY they are linked to the vehicles registration. Which can get suspended I guess after a while.

The following is a Denver Post article. I never looked this up before; I’m glad to see my suspicions were correct. Notice that a traffic violation can not be filed in court until they serve you correctly (i.e. certified mail or in person). The state of Colorado has 90 days to serve you correctly or the ticket expires. The article also states that 40% of these violations are ignored. Of the 40% of citations that are ignored, 25% are dropped since the state did not serve you properly. I actually suspect that number may be higher given my experience. The worst case scenario for me is that I get served properly by the state and I pay the ticket with an additional $59 fine. I tried to link to the article. It might work.
As noted above, this is my experience in the state of Colorado. You may want to research your own state, ignore the citation, and see what happens. As in my original post, we as Americans have a right to know our accuser. The state has an obligation to serve us correctly. I look at these camera systems just as another step of big government stretching their authority that we the people give them. We are not China ............YET! (End of soapbox).
DENVER POST 02/26/19
Unlike a traditional traffic ticket, a photo-enforcement citation — whether from a red-light camera or photo-radar van — can’t be filed in court until a notice (with an additional charge of up to $59) is served in person to an adult at the violator’s address, or delivered via certified mail.
At that point, it’s the luck of the draw — and unpaid citations expire after 90 days, unless a court judgment has been entered.
So what happens to the other 40 percent?
The unpaid red-light and photo-radar citations last year fell into a half-dozen or so categories, but the general breakdowns were similar for each kind: about 25 percent were canceled due to reasons including failure to serve a penalty notice; about 7 percent were canceled because the person registered with the vehicle wasn’t the pictured driver (and there wasn’t a second owner registered or another driver nominated); and nearly 9 percent simply expired.
Update (Feb. 27, 2019): A reference to the potential for unpaid traffic citations to be reported to credit rating agencies has been removed. A legal settlement in 2015 prohibits the agencies from reporting fines and other items that aren’t linked to a contract or agreement to pay.

We don't have front plates or traffic light cameras here but when I've driven to communist Chicago and Baltimore, they have many. I believe the law states that if you are in the intersection upon a light turning red, you have right to cross and this isn't an infraction. The lights in Chicago are designed to take the pic upon the light turning red, I suppose to maximize their revenue, even if you've entered the intersection prior to the light turning.

These things are a scourge.
The WAZE phone app will warn you of Red Light Camera Intersections as you approach them, for what is worth...

I have tried using Waze but it eats up your mobile data fast as does Google Maps :(

most effective thing is to get to know your city council or run yourself, convince others that the changes in people's driving behavior for the cameras is dangerous to other motorists.
