Hi there,
I'm new to the forums. I just bought my first Viper, a 1995 RT/10. Clean title, no accidents, and mostly all original (minus the cone filters a previous owner put on it). Always wanted a first generation Viper and am excited as can be to have got one!
I've historically owned italian and german cars. However, I've had a soft spot for the Viper since I was just a kid. Super amped to join!
The car needs a few tiny things in TLC mode but overall it's a solid car mechanically. It's pretty refreshing to see such an awesome car of its age to have parts availability and such a nice aftermarket.
Got it delivered a few days ago so I'll be spending my Sunday detailing it, cleaning it up from its trip and getting it to a place it needs to be.
The service history is a little vague so I'm not sure the last time some things were done, so I've ordered a list of parts to proactively replace so I can enjoy it for quite some time without hiccups.
Runs strong though and feels great. What a blast!
Side note: Anyone know a good place to get a service manual?

Fantastic , now go to the top bar index and hit join so you can actually become a member. You have two choices and don't let folks give you flak about being in Oregon, you are in a great part of the Country where it is easy to join in Events in the Washington Region or the Northern California Region. Great Club and there are plenty of VOA members in your State.
Always exciting to get your first Viper !!

Btw I wasn't attacking Oregon. Looks like a lovely place to me! Just a joke with their recent decriminalization of ALL street drugs.
Gen 1 RT/10 is the OG Viper, and I love it!

Thanks! First gens were always on my list of must haves. A friend of mine bought a fifth gen he's modified for shift s3ctor and had me come over to help out on a few things and it solidified my need for one.

Oh it's all good, I love it here. Lived in Central Oregon my whole life. People over here are super friendly, there's a lot to do if you love the outdoors.

I'll have to check out the vendors, I would love to keep this car up to date on maintenance and make sure I'm handling any weird quirks it may have in the process. I'm pretty adamant about being proactive on maintenance.

You're good man, I can always take a joke! The Viper is legal and seems to give a pretty good adrenaline high. It's great here. I've visited plenty of states and traveled all over but it's always been home here.

I took it out for my first drive the day after it arrived from transport. I would say it gets the same level of attention that my Jalpa does, which is people snagging pictures, driving up to see it, and doing double takes when they realize what it is.
There's not a lot of cars that get that kind of attention. I'm a bit of an introvert in person, so I seem to choose the worst cars for my social anxiety lol. It's all good though because it's a wonderful car and a blast to drive.
I'm excited for spring when I can take it out and go do some autocross with it or maybe take it out to ORP.

Congrats on your new beautiful addition. All you need is an Asian make, and you’ll pretty much have the whole world covered :-)!
A service manual is always good to have. eBay or there’s a member here, Mike, who always seems to have manual for sale for the year needed. I’m sure he’ll chime in if he has an extra for you.
Definitely reach out to your region’s President and be sure to link up with others in your area. Being amongst other snakes in the snake pit is pure ecstasy! Especially on the track/AutoX.
Check your tire date codes!!!

2500 golf balls?????
I am told that a lot of business in Japan gets conducted over/ during golf. The buyer flew to PDX /PIR, hired a translator, when for a ride with me, and made a nice donation to Dornboechers Kids Hospital.
Then he bought the car, and had me ship to Japan with the trunk FILLED with boxes of expensive golf balls that could not be purchased in Japan. 100% True !

That's fantastic they made a donation to Dornboechers! Not sure if anyone around here ever does events for fundraising like that but once covid calms down and it feels relatively groovy to do that stuff I'd be interested if there's any PNW events that serve a good purpose like that.
We used to do some of those over here in bend and donated the proceeds to multiple charities. Get a bunch of exotics. Wonderful time and good cause.

I agree.........Doris and I have helped raise over $250K for Dornboechers, some for Emanuel. Vipers were a high-demand ride for 24 years........... FORD GT topped us, and Lambo Murci, etc when avail. Kids Love Vipers. The sponsor handed Doris the FGT keys for rides.....so did TESLA, a very popular ride 5 years ago.
The sad part is giving sick / terminal kids "The Ride Of Your Life".... Sometimes too weak to wear helmets, too pained to wear seatbelts. We break the rules and laws by putting them in Mom / Dad's lap and adjust the track-lap G-forces accordingly. IF they come back the next year its usually a small miracle. Some three-four peat! They get nicknames..... "Donut King" and "Cookie King" come to mind for the ones who love to make smoke.

That's awesome that you guys are able to do that. Makes me happy to read about people doing stuff like that, we definitely need more of that in the world.

A gentleman who saw this post reached out and found me who had a manual for sale so I am going to send him some money and look forward to a manual for the viper. It'll be nice to have a factory manual to go off of. I'm no stranger to working on cars, but the viper is pretty new to me. Does anyone know if these ECUs work off of speed density alone? Or if they are a blend of alpha-n/speed density in terms of fuel mapping?
A few things I've noticed, and a few questions:
- The car is running inherently pretty rich, and leans out eventually a bit after it warms up. During the warmup cycle, it is hunting idle pretty hard, and sometimes will even sink and stall. I can "get around it" by modulating the throttle as I come to a stop in a heel-toe manner, if I'm gentle. It isn't always doing it. I did read a post somewhere that if turning the AC ON doesn't actually fix it then the idle motor may be gunked up or bad. Are there any good step-by-step troubleshooting methods to rule out what the cause of the hunting idle and stalling could be?
- I also read that the idle motor can be due to faulty voltage, the battery is pretty old I believe. New battery arrived, so I'll put that in this weekend.
- The idle is a little stumbly and feels pretty rough on and off, it appears the plug wires still have the original dodge mopar logo on them so my guess is these are the original coils and wires, I have replacements. But can anyone still even get factory wires for these? Or is my assessment they are original probably correct? The previous owner had no records of parts for me.
- Are there any recommended plug and play options for ECUs on the first gen cars? I've seen a couple posts that people went standalone with megasquirt, and I'm no stranger to megasquirt 3, but a pnp solution would be rad if they exist.

NO Plug-Play Options G1. that computer is a 'blended' Jeep-Truck combo. Unique.
Low Battery can cause probs indeed, in ALL Gens. Hope you did not by a Sloptima. Die-Hard / Odyssey best.
Your G1 idle issue could likely be as simple as throttle-body synch. The cables stretch over time. There is a spring-plunger device that helps you synch them when you get that manual.
Meantime, try this:
Rest your fingertips lightly on each TB cable, right at each TB.
ENGINE OFF is ok too.
Have a friend lightly press the gas pedal.
You should clearly feel the Drivers Side TB crack-open a bit before the Psgr side. Distinctly FIRST. "Driver Is The Leader" is how I remember.
If the RH is first, or simultaneous, you will get rough idle and bucking at parking-lot speeds.
The A/C ON is good for G2 idle re-learn issues, "The year Matters" on almost ALL Viper advice, free or not.

Great info thank you Jon. This weekend I plan on doing some paint correction, as well as installing the parts I ordered. I will check the throttle bodies "while i'm down there". The throttle body setup is interesting, I'm used to seeing dual throttle bodies usually synced via linkage and not cables but if they're all adjustable I suppose it's all good. But cable slop could definitely make some sense there. I'll check that first before anything else. I know it's been a while since it's likely had maintenance done properly on it, so I want to thoroughly sort the car and catch it up.
