View Full Version : Might be a good time to get your Fuel Injectors serviced

I wanted to share the good results I had with sending my fuel injectors out for service recently.

I decided to try a company named Fuel Injector Specialists, as they were local (Denver), they were only going to charge $20/injector, and they claimed they would provide before and after flow results for each injector. Happy to report they were true to their word, and timely with the turnaround.

Removing/replacing your injectors is a simple operation requiring minimal tools/experience. There is raw fuel involved, so be careful... Procedure is outlined in the service manual for your vehicle, or plenty of posts on the forum to help you out. Definitely a decent project to get done while the beast is hibernating.

At almost 25 years and 70,000 miles, I was unsure if the injectors had ever been serviced, but decided it was time. A quick trip down the road after installing would seem to indicate the car runs a bit smoother than before - certainly no worse. Reasonable preventative maintenance peace-of-mind at a reasonable cost.

A few pics:

Packet coming back from service. Contents included the serviced injectors, old O-Rings, printed before/after results for each injector. I labeled my injectors before sending out, they stenciled each injector number as well.

Give Chuck a call, they do honest work IMHO. More info on their web site regarding testing and whatnot.

Excellent info. Older injectors also do not do well with today's fuel, at least that has been my experience, and for $20/ea with before and after that seems like a cheap way to ensure they work properly.

I just had my engine rebuilt, but didn't get the injectors serviced. My fuel economy sucks, and the right bank runs 40-50F hotter than the left. I have a spare set that I should send out for the business.

I just had mine cleaned and checked during a rebuild on the racecar. Had an issuse with one after all was said and done. Pulled them and had them checked again and they all showed ok so we were thinking a driver or wiring. Turns out is was one injector that somehow electrically got compromised and worked intermittenly, or stayed open, or closed forever, etc. Change it out and all seems good.....heading to the dyno

Agree with the crappy fuel comment.

Bad fuel economy is a possible indication of injector issues, as Dean points out!

According to Chuck, our injector problems usually arise as we have crappy fuels, combined with cars that sit around more than usual, leaving residues which impede the correct flow. He reiterates his web page statements regarding the fact that our simple injectors should normally be good for 250k miles or so, with some TLC.

Chuck takes no money up front. He'll settle up with you at the end if your injectors all test within spec. If you have an injector that cannot be brought within spec, he'll work with you to see about a replacement. My injectors were all within 1%, but I believe he charges a minimal testing amount (if any) if your injector is bad.

I spoke with him on the phone this afternoon to thank him and to let him know the Viper Nation may be sending him some business. He's got some crazy stories of people sending him their entire fuel rails from their cars that cost more than his house, so I think our injectors are no problem. Don't send him your fuel rails, just the injectors...

Do you know the flow spec for the OEM injectors? Are they the same for all Gen 2s?
