Anyone had this issue in their car? Both driver and passenger seat belts will lock and stay locked if you shift hard. Had it happen at the 1/4 mile and can even do it on the street. Only way to release yourself from the seatbelt choking you is to unbuckle their seatbelts LOL

There is an inertia sensor that does that. Most all cars have them.

Yeah, happens to me too. Just lean back and release the tension/lock....No big deal. Maybe skip a neck-day at the gym if you're getting choked.

It's called Web sensitivity. If you really hate it you can take the retractor out and remove a little weight that senses G-load. The retractor will still work but the belt won't lock up when you just pull on it.
Happens all the time. It's the Gs!

It also won't keep you from flying through the windshield any more if you tamper with it. Insurance companies know that too and will be able to tell if you're in a serious crash and the inertia devise has been removed. They won't have to pay.
So, I would never tamper with it. But that's just me.

What Dave said. No point on wearing a seat belt for safety if you do that. The shoulder part the belt is designed to lock if it senses quick movement forward. Test it as you should periodically on all your cars. I do. Pull the shoulder part off your shoulder and then yank it quickly, it should lock, if not get it fixed.
Seat belts are designed per car and the angle they bolt too must not be changed. I shake my head every time I see someone change the location of the belt or use some for another car in their project car. Use a harness in your project cars not from some other type of vehicle.

I'm all in for modifying your cars etc. But this, don't fuck with either seatbelts or airbags.

Web sensitivity has nothing to do with how the retractor performs. It's strictly for passenger perception. Years ago they stopped making belts with web sensitivity and people started complaining that their seat belts didn't work. Then they put it back so people wouldn't complain. My first job out of college was at a Seatbelt/airbag manufacturer. Very interesting job watching all the airbag testing.

Which is illegal.

...
I also did a lot of air bag testing in college.
Related, but FYI college air bags can get pregnant.

Which is illegal.
Also dangerous if you're running without a rollcage.
And if you have a rollcage that itself is dangerous without a helmet.
