Has anyone ever run into the issue where their AC or wipers will not shut off when the car is off?

I recently went to get n inspection sticker at a local garage and on the way back home My wipers kicked on along with a few other lights on the dash. When I got home I shut the car off and the wipers will not shut off or the AC I have to disconnect the battery to shut it down. I stopped by the dealer and they were able to check for codes for me but did not have time to diagnose. They gave me a print out that had the following codes.

It’s possible there is an issue with the CAN bus, do you know what do they do during the inspection?

In my assorted readings on the SAE forum, automotive engineering posters have mentioned the possibility of harm being done to various modules through the use of OBD II diagnostic devices/apps and/or data collectors (such as insurance companies or parents might use). I have no idea how often this might have been observed or validated...but it has definitely been discussed.

A quick google search netted me this thread for what it's worth:

https://mechanics.stackexchange.com/questions/19109/can-a-vehicle-be-harmed-with-bad-inputs-via-an-obd-2-port

While I found the thread interesting, it may only be helpful in your case to at least raise questions.

As Doug asked...just what were they doing during the inspection?

I had that happen in my 2014 when I was driving. I honestly don't remember what I did but it was something simple, like restart or take off the battery cable......maybe it fixed itself......It never did it again.

Doug,

I'm not 100% sure what they did during the inspection. They check basic safety such as turn signals, lights, they used to check ties rods and then they hook something up to the computer for emissions and to ensure the computer has not recently been reset.

Another weird thing is the fuel popped open and will not close unless the battery is disconnected.

I've seen a pinched CAN bus wire that was intermittently shorting to ground cause strange things like this. It wasn't on a Viper but all CAN buses work similarly. Since this happened right after use of the OBD II port by the garage that serviced your car, check the wiring near the port.

I took a look at the wire exiting the port as well as others around it and they all seem to be in good condition. Does anyone think its possible if the inspection station had a frayed cable that they plugged into the OBD II port it could have caused damage to the ECU?

This is more than likely the issue. I had the same thing happen when tapping into the ODB port for my aero wing. The ECU will protect it self for the most part

I would still try disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes and see if the cures the problems. Modern electronics seem to need a reboot every now and then. The only way to really do that is to disconnect the battery. Doing this has fixed electronic issues for me with my Viper several times. Turn on your headlights after you disconnect the battery, I'm told this helps drain any residual charges in the system.
