Just a quick question, just did my oil change yesterday. Let the car sit overnight and pulled the dip stick once and it’s right at the top of safe. Just curious if that is “normal”? I’ve seen a lot of guys say that the oil is way past the top of the safe line. It got the full 11 qts of oil during the oil change, it was also allowed to drain for over an hour. Thanks

Just did mine the other day. I added 11 qts and mine ended up showing about 1/4 qt overfilled. Checked it 5 min after shutting the motor down and it was close to the same “slight overfill”. My previous change showed perfect after adding 11 so must have been a better drain. Perhaps the oil cooler was holding some on my last one. Tons of threads on here about the insanity of checking the oil on these things. Sounds good to me. You know you have 11 in it and it not showing a slight overfill like mine did. Check her 5 min after shutdown on your your next fill up and see where she sits.

Thanks brother!

I've been adding an extra qt for 6 yrs now, going to 12 qt's total on an oil change. Cheap insurance, have you seen the size of the oil pan.. lol. mountain roads & street driven. my oil level is always full..

Overfill is bad also.. can cause aeration.

lol.. maybe, on a full on track car. street or spirited driving not a chance.. have you looked at your oil pan. it's huge!

Very true. Aeration can be very bad for bearing life. Reduces heat transfer out of the bearing and lower fatigue strength of the bearing material. Not to mention valve closing velocities and valve failure. Size of the pan doesn't mean anything. Proximity to the rotating components is the issue.

Now that you know the exact mark 11 quarts of oil is on your dipstick cold (and you know its exactly 11 quarts) you have a valid cold measurement mark. I have about a 1/4" difference between warm and cold. That's the norm.

That’s why size of the pan means everything. By adding an extra quart to a giant pan, your vertical distance barely moves up. The car is drawing so much oil, the pan is probabalt down 5-6 quarters while driving. You will not be aerating significantly with the extra quart since you have 8-9% more oil in the system. Put an extra quart in a 5 quart system and yes, your aeration will definitely go up. Size of pan matters. Total fill matters. I’ve been using an extra quart for a while. No harm in it on a 11 quart system. Guys in Dubai also run it, system runs slightly cooler as well with the extra volume. It’s all about % difference from baseline.

Ah Sadii don’t you think the standard oil level already takes into consideration the oil circulating in the engine while running. Not determined statically but dynamically, under running conditions. Do what you want but when you tell others to do something while those who have tested extensively warn against doing it isn’t right. Note Dick Winkles specifically cautioned against adding additional oil as a preventative measure. I think he may know just a little more about Viper engines than you.

FYI TKOmotorsports also recommends extra quart and they have extensive Viper knowledge. There's going to be two sides to everything. If you're not feeling as adventurous but you still want to live life on the edge then maybe opt for the extra 0.5 qt as opposed to the full quart. Whatever you do, I think the key is to make sure you're not low on oil.

Wish we could take credit for the extra quart of oil idea but its an old racer trick thats been around for a very very long time and used on all types of cars not just vipers. We are just here to pass on the whats worked for us and maybe save some people alot of grief.
always check your oil

Yep, was a common trick with the '60s Hemi's.
