View Full Version : Looking to buy a Viper

Looking for a TA 2 or similar spec gen v viper. At this point I don't care if it's a real or "fake" TA2. Higher mileage cars are welcome as I'm not really looking for a garage queen or a car I'll be looking to profit from (maybe I'll trade in for an acr down the line but that's it). Owning a viper has been a childhood dream of mine. PM me if you have a something that fits the bill.

That blue is my first choice but the price is out of range for what I'm looking :-( GLWS!! I'm in Chicago.

@hydronos if you have any plans to track the Viper, you really want to reconsider the TA2 and stretch that budget a tad. There is value in the TA and TA2 that most non-owners don't appreciate.
The TA2 really doesn't need much to be a good reliable track toy, sticky tires, trackpads, track brake fluid and track alignment.

There's a orange ta 2 in Toronto we agreed to a 90k price but getting a loan is being problematic on a Canadian title car. If someone can sell me a ta2 here for that <90k I'll do it.

If you found a GenV ACR with no stories for 106k your a fool if you don't stretch your budget and get it.. If you not interested in it tell me where it is and I will go buy it.

I may be missing something OP but I’m assuming you are stateside looking at a Canadian car at 90k? Not only is a loan the issue but also importing typically has costs associated with it and the inability to warranty also. That 90k will be north of that even if loans were possible.
I’m not sure if the TA 2.0 was implied to sell for 10k over the 85k budget or if it was applied to the ACR budget as I’m unsure of values currently. But outlier examples will be difficult to base expectations if you realistically want to get into a well sorted out car. A 105k ACR from the past that was scooped with the assumption of being non storied will beg the question of if and or when it even will present itself again. I only say this because no one is going to offer their cars based on the lowest selling outlier just as no buyer is going to pay for the highest price selling outlier.
If anyone wants to sell an ACR clean title for 107k I’ll pay for it in cash tbh.

He's talking about this car- https://www.ebay.com/itm/2016-Dodge-Viper/264734993117
He's asking $106K with the factory shocks instead of the MCS which he put on it, which is crazy the factory shocks cost 10 times as much as MCS shocks.

There was a Gunmetal Pearl with 4k miles for sale in Tampa for I think $75k is what they were willing to take. Beautiful car. Black interior but it had the base wheels. But for that price? No-brainer. I would have bought it if it was available a week earlier.

There is a ta2 orange I found in Toronto for 90k with 10k miles. Yes, I understand the headache of importing a car over especially now during covid. What I was trying to say is that for a viper srt/gts I don't want to spend more than 65-75k I think now. If I can get my hands on this acr or similar for 100-110k that would be amazing. I hope that provides some clarity. That itch to buy something NOW is here + this car has been my dream car since I was a kid (the 96 viper gts)

Dunno if the ACR is a real listing or not. Seems slightly low but also has some decent miles. And the TA 1.0 has the Venzano interior. Not my cup of tea but still a great car.

If you need all the options you listed, you'll need to find a GTS with an SRT hood...which is a rare combination.
It sounds like the 2015+ GT model could check all the boxes other than the SRT hood. Here's a perfect example:

Chuck,
That's been on CarGurus for 314 days, so I doubt it's still for sale. I also recall someone going to look at the car and stating the car was not in the best of shape. A friend who worked for that dealer said it was a shady dealer to work for, although I do not recall the specifics.

There is a 2015 adrenaline red base srt with 6 vent hood, 6,500 miles, twin turbo, $98k/obo. For sale on the VOA FB page.
Also GTS blue no stripe for 85k but none were ever made with the 6 vent hood in that combo. (https://tampa.craigslist.org/hil/cto/d/tampa-2013-dodge-viper-gts/7116858230.html)

I don’t believe I’m mistaken. The TA2’s mentioned were both 2015. Are you taking about the threedrb’s viper?
Hi I m looking to buy TA 2.0 how do I know the TA#?
It’s on the lower right corner of the dash plaque on the passenger side.
The FCA is very clear about the TA being a special edition. All special editions are numbered. There was an identical spec’d 2017 comp blue exact to the pic above that was recently for sale. It was a low mile 1 owner car that had it’s “Viper GT” badges removed from the fenders and replaced with TA stickers. No TA’s have oem gloss black stripes and after searching all 2017 VINs only 2 we’re found, 1 TA1 and 1 TA2 none in blue. Even though the original MSRP was higher than a TA, some buyers may pay more for a special edition car on the used market. I’ve seen two so far do this, one being a 2017 comp blue low mile GTC with the srt hood, option group TA (not the TA package) and gloss black stripes, which may or may not be threedrb’s car, the other being a white Bonderant car.
Switching the badging is anyones right but when you go to sell it and try and pass it off as a special edition it’s blatant fraud. Not trying to be that guy but I don’t want to see any buyer’s get taken advantage of.

Im talking about the SSG 17 in this thread that was posted as a potential FS car. The owner of that car sent an image of the window sticker to a friend of mine. It was equipped with the TA2 option package at a cost of $8700. I suppose this is going to end up just like the GTC ACR isn’t a real ACR debate which I have no interest in debating. To me that qualifies it as a TA2 your opinion may vary.

The TA package is $16,000, 8,700 is the option group. I agree with you, there is nothing to debate since the makers of our cars already set the facts and numbered all the special editions. Good luck, it’s a badass car regardless.

The SRT ride is definitely a little rougher compared to the 2 mode in it's softer Street setting. I only rode in an SRT once, but back to back with my TA, and I'd say the SRT was actually pretty close to the 2 mode Race setting. I actually prefer the softer Street setting even on the road course usually because I feel the stiffer Race setting takes out a little too much compliance for anything but quite smooth pavement.

My SRT is certainly "firm" especially on our crappy PA roads. But I like it personally. I've never driven a GTS, so I have nothing to compare it to.

The SRT suspension definitely rides rougher than the bi-mode suspension on the GT/GTS and even the TA. It's definitely lower spec. Not a big concern if the plan is to upgrade, but even with the higher spring rate, the TA rides smoother than the SRT. The best example I can think of where the difference is most felt is small bump compliance, like freeway expansion joints.
I also don't know if anyone mentioned it, but the GTS seats are smaller than the SRT/TA/ACR seats. They are quite a bit tighter up top. If you're on the larger side, you will probably find the GTS seats less comfortable.

I think if you end up with a TA, the suspension will be fine for you. If you buy an SRT there are plenty of options, I have the DSC/Tractive electronically controlled active suspension on mine, but a cheaper option, which I hear nothing but good reviews on, is the MCS suspension, which is better on track, and more comfortable on the street. If I hadn't been so curious of the Tractive, I would have the MCS no doubt. Both allow height adjustment, which the TA suspension does not.

Ok. So I now recognize the disparity with the cost of the option group vs the package What TA bits were left out off of the cars with the “option group” that were included with the “package”? Assuming brakes and dual mode suspension?

I donno.. you could say Dodge numbered all the GTC cars.. they are all 1 of 1 and noted as much on the dash plaque ("Custom Designed by.."). The serial production numbered cars are also special in there own way with the number telling you what number it was in the run of identical cars. Pretty cool that Dodge did all this cool stuff for us.. All These Vipers are awesome and special! Hope you all get out today to enjoy YOURS!
Can anyone help me understand how a base srt without the two mode suspension drives compared to a gts/ta with all the options and upgrades?
I've daily driven both SRT suspension and TA 1.0 suspension Vipers and was perfectly comfortable with both. The differences were very subtle and maybe mostly due to the spring rate and anti-roll bar differences.
Ok. So I now recognize the disparity with the cost of the option group vs the package What TA bits were left out off of the cars with the “option group” that were included with the “package”? Assuming brakes and dual mode suspension?
the fender stickers and serialized production number dash plaque. Also, the 13-15 TA's had the .63 6th gear which switched in 16 as top speed for TA1/TA2 aero is achieved in 5th.

Haha you're really trying hard. Those plaques are not numbered and the FCA has never listed all GTC cars as special editions. They kept it simple since there are no special editions that aren't numbered and there are no numbered cars that aren't special editions.

Carbon Fiber Rear Applique, Carbon Fiber Structural X-Brace, SRT hood, TA fender stickers, numbered dash plaque.
It's really not much difference physically between the package vs option group but the FCA justified the price difference with an intangible. They made a lot of extra money making so many different special editions over the 25 years. The option group was really a much better bang for the buck, plus you could add any other options or colors you wanted where as the package you couldn't add options or custom paint.

It would be illogical for FCA to call a 1-of-1 car a special edition. It is by its very nature a special edition of 1.

You could add custom paint to the package, or option group cars. There was a member on here that was able to order a "Real TA" in a Ferrari gray color that looked amazing. In fact it was the member that spearheaded the "option group vs package cars" campaign. I believe he was from Canada and ultimately sold his car, but it was a real TA and it was not black, white, or orange. It believe it was a 2016 as well, so not one of the original 2014 TA's.

Yep I’m familiar with that car. There were actually 3 of those GTC cars with the TA 1.0 package (not the option group) made and 2 were promotional cars used for marketing and Donk’s old car was the one you’re talking about. He’s the only person on the planet that pulled that order off besides the two executive/marketing cars. For the rest of the world it wasn’t possible. I even looked into it for myself when ordering was still open and couldn't do it.

Haha you like to stir the pot! Yes of course you could order anything above and beyond including that stuff, most had much higher MSRP’s than a TA’s anyways. The question was asked about the price difference between the option and package. To answer your question, no he did not. The build sheets were posted on those cars and they included ACR fender stickers but not TA stickers. Those cars did not leave the conner assembly plant with TA fender stickers, which makes sense since it’s a dealer special edition.

It seems like it’s one of those 1 of 1 cars but designed by Chrysler themselves. Was wondering if anyone has heard of this type car or has an knowledge about these corporate fleet vipers. Seller is spinning it as a very rare car aka higher than normal asking price, so want to make sure that’s truly the case

That is an amazing color combo! My guess the price would be north of 150k based on other 2016/2017 ACR's on the market right now. Some even north of 200K so all depends on the miles and rarity.

It is very unique and perhaps the only one like it.
If so, and if it is a 2017 final year car, low miles (i.e. 2,500 or less), in perfect condition, then you could be looking at a $180k-$200k car. As others have stated, the best of these cars have gone well north of $200k during hot market times. The car you have found could fall into that category.
If it is a 2016, the value could be $20k-$30k lower.

I appreciate everyone’s input, helps a lot! Yea it’s a 2016 pretty low mileage under 2000. The plaque on the dashboard says designed by Stryker ACR, does anyone know what that means? As I said before, I know dodge the company was the original owner and they used it for marketing, not sure if it has something to do with that

Oh wow, that's shady as heck. I went and saw his car on May 25th and agreed to buy it that same day. I told him that I'd start working on the finance and asked for his vin and window sticker, but that's when he went dark on me. He messaged me two days later saying "he didn't want to sell it anymore", but I got the feeling he just didn't want to sell it to me in particular (who knows). Either way, I found another 2016 GTC with the TA 2.0 option car from an amazing seller. We've become friends on Facebook and are in communication daily. I'm just speechless again I wanted to buy that car and I drove out 2hrs one-way to go check it out. I knew the second I left that guy was going to do something like that. Either way, I hope he is doing okay.

You may be correct regarding the amount of interest that Angleiron received on the car but that doesn't excuse him for selling a vehicle to multiple people (at the same time) and avoiding communicating with a buyer rather than simply manning up and telling the truth. I don't think that Angleiron will resurface with any counter arguments as I have saved all of the text messages and emails between us regarding the car and its condition which I will gladly post should he deny anything I've stated.
I should probably start a new thread addressing this failed transaction rather than distract from this posting so I can further expound upon the car, its mechanical & cosmetic issues and Greg's misleading practices all of which he communicated to me after we agreed upon the purchase price. Part of me wants to write this off as a bad experience with an atypical VOA member and be done with it... while part of me feels there is an obligation to ensure that the next potential buyer is fully aware of the car's condition and Angleiron's less than ideal character.

As they say.... the internet is written in ink
In defense of Greg (angleiron) he communicated in an above the board manner with a friend of mine regarding the fact that he accepted an offer that was higher than his in a timely manner. He and I even shared a few Personal messages regarding the negotiations between he and my friend..... however he never disclosed to my friend that the motor had been replaced.
