Going to go hit some range balls at O dark thirty this AM at a local Muni. Cursing down past a Dodge dealer and I see this....

So, I know they spent the night out there.... but hey the car needs exposure.... right?
The question is are YOU willing to buy these cars sitting outside on the lot (Second time I have seen this in a month) or, are you OK with it?
Have you bought a new Viper from an outdoor lot?
Or, is the Viper just another car and it's no big deal?

Yes but only if it's outside in southern Cali .

better than inside a showroom. Kids treat them like Jungle gyms and everyone has to touch them. The outside depends on weather issues and how long it sits in the lot.

Would not bother me, as I said for 18+ years: "Its Just a Dodge."
........... Im a bit surprised to see the $14K paint option STRYKER outside, certainly worthy of a showroom. At least its SoCal.
Inside or out it's the condition of the car that matters. Besides that the price sells cars!

I was really surprised to see that too. I think that was what made me really stop. One seagull doo doo and a good day of sun equals some etching you really don't want in that paint.

Arrigo in S. Fla have a dozen sitting outside. Given a choice I want a car that has stayed indoors. Detailed and in the showroom is the best way to sell any car.

yep, probably. And thats probably the 114k B/W thats been sitting on their lot for awhile as well. Im wondering if it will hit the 110k mark. Every few weeks i keep seeing them drop it 1k. Been that way for awhile...
But i am surprised that they are not storing those 100k+ cars inside... Me personally if i was looking to buy a new 100k car that shit better be on a show room floor, INSIDE!

If I was buying one and had a choice, of course I would pick the one inside with ropes around it.
If I were a tire kicker and wanted to see one, I would go to this dealership to see them outside and not be hassled with sales people inside the showroom.
The Viper is no McLaren, Lambo, Ferrari or the like. Outside during the day is ok but, those cars should be inside overnight At 240K+? The Viper is definitely not just another car (100K+) but it certainly deserves more respect than an overnight dual with nature. The sun is not a good friend of paint finishes and or interiors. Rain, wind and temp changes are also culprits. That said, its not like those cars are going to be out there long enough to cause any of those damage issues just mentioned. Sales are slow, and, getting them out there for everyone to see is the right approach. Out of sight and out of mind right? I'll bet you can get a test drive from that dealership. We all complain about marketing and then limit it or advertise to our sponsors that we want them to be put under a tarp in order for us to want them. Makes no sense. They need to be flaunted.
Good for that dealership for reaching out.

Funny how reliable prides itself on transport from CAAP to dealership without the car ever seeing sunlight until dealership arrival; and then places like this just leave them out anyway.

I don't think it's too big of a deal. It'd get rained on if I owned it so no harm having the same thing done at the dealer. My only concern would be the sun cooking the interior all day long.

Every area is different and the amount of time outdoors on daily basis will have some type of detrimental effect. Some of these cars have been out in the salty, acid rain, bird poop and well water sprinkler sprayed lots for months. You don't know me. I am a driver not a polisher. If someone is going to screw my car up , it's going to be me not the dealer.

If there was bad etching on the glass or clear (which there will be) I would pass. Why would I take one that has sat outside in the elements for months when you can pluck one from the vault at Tomball?

No way. Those of you that would...do you park you car on the street overnight as well or do you put in in your garage ?
Between the dust/sand, people walking around them and inevitably scratching them with that same dust/sand layer coating the car, car lot guys washing them (gallons of water down the hood vents over time and I am sure they don't open the hood to dry). Hard water spots from the same outdoor rinse off.
No, I don't think it will shrink or melt but when buying a 100K + car, I would want it to be 'new' in every aspect. Dealers that treat their Vipers with a bit more respect will always get my business. I really like the 'vault' idea myself

Most don't leave their Viper outside overnight because they are worried someone will steal it, mess with it or key it. Worrying about a bird dropping on it, well I guess others have much more important things to worry about in life. Mine are always tucked away in a garage at night but that is because I can. If I had to leave it outside overnight, then I would make sure it is in a place I could see it from a window, off the road, etc. if I felt I needed to. If it was a special car with a one off paint job or something like Stryker Red or Green, you would prefer it to be inside away from elements if you can but on a brand new car, it comes down to the price. If someone is discounting it due to non-100% condition because of lot damage, then you are not paying for special anyway.
The large number of responses that say no are a little interesting. I see guys that buy their cars and then freak out if a bug hits it, the massive damage the paint will have. Ha! Ha! You have to live life and enjoy it. You can do it smartly. Hell I probably have the worse situation here on my 95' BASF Mystic Saleen as it is a true collectible and their is no more paint. Original paint job cost Saleen and BASF $25,000 and that was back 1995. Changes 17 different colors. I bought the car and put on 8,000 miles in the 13 years I have owned it. Paint is still there and I have enjoyed it. Yah I am selective where I drive it and wait for all sand to be off roads etc. but I still drive and enjoy it. Others would just drop it in a museum and that is it.
But back to the original OP's question, of course I would buy from outside. The price always dictates the sale in any situation anyway. A protected lot where the car was outside and will be outside when I drive I anyway, why would you be scared in the slightest to buy? Ferrari of Denver brings them in and out on nice days, I would imagine so does the Dodge dealer. If someone is buying a new car, say a Stryker Red 2013 and the dealer is knocking off $20k from the car's MRSP which more than negates the $14,500 paint option price. That is just a smart buy right there! We should all be hoping the car is stored outside!

There is a big difference between the car sitting outside for a few weeks and just needing a detailer to go over it once vs a car that is covered in bird crap, has etching, etc.
A car sitting outside doesn't mean it is damaged.
I wonder if some people who categorically say "no" even drive your cars. You surely must not track them to be worried about a car sitting outside in the elements and getting rained on a few times. I'd bet most dealers do more damage cleaning the car before you'd take delivery (swirls) than you'd see from it sitting outside.
If the car has been out for a year, yeah - I'd start to question how well it is doing. But, again, a skilled detailer can do a lot.
Now, a Carbon edition sitting outside? Well I'd agree there that it is an issue seeing how hard that paint is to care for...

OP question was pretty straight forward. Didn't mention any special discounts etc. Some of the posters keep adding this into their responses and of course that may very well change someones mind.
So if all things are in fact equal. Price, model, test miles etc, then No Way would I buy the car that has been displayed outside for a length of time
Also VS....why are you worried about whether or not I drive my car ? I bought it...now I do as I please or whatever makes me happy. Its such a typical question from many. Like it bothers you that I don't use my car like you do. Of course...your way is right....mine is wrong.

This looks like Orange Coast Dodge in Costa Mesa, CA.
Outside can be OK if it is watched and washed very carefully each day. Many dealers of all types (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, etc.) here have beautiful $100k+ cars outside on back lots in particular--there is only so much room in the Showroom.

Same thing here in the SF Bay Area. The local Ferrari dealership has about 30 various exotics that are uber expensive, in their outside lot. As long as the car is cherry, I'd buy it. If the car were sitting in the sun for 2 years, that would be another matter. I might pass on that.

The McLaren collection is awesome. I made the mistake a few years back buying a new Hemi Challenger from my local dealer that had the car outside for awhile. The porters rinse these cars from time to time and having hard water in the area caused tons of hard water stains on the roof, and so deep they could not come out. Seeing it in the daylight did not reveal this damage in the clear coat but when inside the garage (after buying it) with lighting it really stood out.

Literally saw a new 2014 Lambo in the showroom today. The $7500 paint upgrade looked great. Unless you looked at it at the perfect angle. It had been outside at some point and exposed to some seriously hard water. Spots were burned into the clear coat and they weren't coming off. I left while the salesman was trying to show me that it would "buff right out".

I buy cars to drive them because, well, they are cars. Sure, some are nicer than others, but if I were to buy a $100k+ vehicle, you can be damn sure it's going to be driven and seen as opposed to sitting in my garage so I can stare at it. So whether it sits outside some on the dealer lot or sits outside some in my possession, it's going to happen.

Question is.... in many cases how would you know your car was stored outside in bak out of sight ?
I would be more worried about a flood car or a car that was repainted due to storm damage.

Vipers do not melt. As long as the paint was blemish free and detailed well, I wouldn't care. It isn't like the paint on a Viper is less durable than a Ram truck.

As I said elsewhere do you think cars , including exotics don't sit outside at plants or regional distributors for days or weeks waiting for transport??
As to a dealer, I think it is dumb, but it would not bother me. Again, cars sit outside a lot often before even getting to dealers.

Beautiful cars, what I want next. While a brand new one is a bit out of my range, I think a previously loved one is quite affordable (Though, I'd like for McLaren to introduce their extended warranty program first...)
But that dealership is a total dump. Bently, Astons, McLaren, in what looks like a former meat packing facility.

I would not buy a six figure car that sat in the sun baking all summer or even two long. Used car, ok, you know its used.
But cars sitting in the sun baking away don't do them any favors.
