So one of the drawbacks of starting from scratch is the loss of some of the common, previously existing threads on maintenance etc.

Am curious what oil people are running in their Gen IIs: still Mobil 10W-30? 15W-50? Other brands/weights?

There is a very recent, active thread on that. Ill try to search it and do a link....

Ah, wasn't lookin in the GenV section for it. Safe to say what's true for them is true for the oldies too?

As Tom, the oil&gas geek would say: diesel 15w-40. Best stuff to use in everything.

Yes, the 'rules' back in 92-95 changed when synthetics became widely available, and then factory-fill. They change continuously as the product and additives improve.

Even the 92-99 trans had a TSB to update to 2000+ oil ....

Running Amsoil in my Gen 3 and Motorcycles If you look at the full specs its better than Mobil-1. IMHO.

Some say it's all good as long as the viscosity is correct, and some say no go because it causes sludge, etc. I have read about diesel oil a few times with the viper, but I also need 20w40 oil for the GTO, so both vehicles would technically need it as finding regular synthetic oil in these viscosities is getting difficult. Does anyone really know the difference of gas and diesel oil?

I've run Mobil 1 0W-40. Buy it on sale or if lucky, find at Walmart.

Here's the UOA: 3896

On Tom's advice, I've been running diesel engine oils exclusively for 15 years now. Like the extra detergents and anti-wear additives and the viscosity range, plus it's available everywhere.

I choose the synthetic Mobil 1 Delvac and Shell Rotella T6 for all my cars (5W-40) and my used oil analysis are spectacular.

You use them on all your vehicles? Or just the viper? Is the sludge issue false? I'd like to start in my GTO for sure..it takes such thick oil I car barely find any gasoline oils in that viscosity anymore

Mobil 1 0w40 here
I use the Amoil 10-30 Zrod. Im tempted to use the amsoil Z-rod 20w50 OR the amsoil deisel OE 15w40. I am swaying towards the Z-rod...but is 20w50 too thick?

I think something that is rarely discussed is the weather. If you are not running it in cold climates. For example, in Florida my driving season starts on January 1st at about 9:00AM and ends December 31st at about 10 ish. (I need to give it a rest right...lol). Point is that running a 0W or a 10W oil makes no difference. The operating viscosity is all I am concerned with. If you run at or near freezing... worry about the winter viscosity. (The "W")

I run Mobil 1 10W-30 in both the Viper and my daily. The daily is a supercharged SRT8 Charger with 85,000 miles on it. The Viper gets the oil changed at 3,000 miles. I alos change it before a long road trip and promptly after it simply because we drive a bit more "spirited" during those trips. The Charger gets it changed every 5K miles. Mostly because that's about 2 months. We drive it a lot! Never had an issue at all.

As mentioned.... when it goes on sale, I buy three or four 6 quart boxes. Walmart or one of the auto parts chains typically have it on sale every other month.

Anyone have a used oil analysis of the amsoil 10w-40 they can share?

I'm running Mobil 15w-50 based on my mods and recommendation from Greg Good who put together my cam/heads package. Tom Hayden is very much alive and well and is a member in my region. I'll try to get him to post here on this subject.
