Wondering if anyone has chemically stripped a Gen 1 dash panel, I recently painted my dash panel gloss black, really like the look... It had been painted semi gloss black before and had a few bubbles in it, I did feather out down to the original grey the bubbles prior to painting gloss black, applied a coat of urethane primer, sanded and bc/cc black, after a few days I have bubbles now in other areas including a large part of the glove box door, I am now gonna strip it down to the original plastic and treat the plastic and prime/paint again, will be very hard to mechanically sand all the areas so wondering if anyone has used a chemical stripper safe for plastic/urethane on their dash panel

Oven cleaner.

I have found that gasoline works pretty well with a 3M scuff pad. You need to remove all the old paint until its just plastic. Then use grease and wax remover. Plastic spray paint in a rattle can works well to refinish.

thanks guys... the problem now is I have urethane catalyzed clear on the parts, I don't think the oven cleaner will cut the clear and im sure the gas wont, my only worry is the plastic of the dash and will it get soft with a methylene chloride paint stripper, not sure if the dash is a thermo-plastic or a thermo-set plastic, I will treat the plastic and prime/paint after stripped but wanted to know if anyone has ever chemically stripped their dash. will try the oven cleaner as it did strip the anodized clear from my alloy wheels41759

The dash is likely ABS. It should say so on the back.

Great thanks Dave
FYI painted my 94 a satin black rattle can for plastic with primer included, looks factory. Gloss show all imperfections and also reflects light when driving.

thanks and appreciate it, the dash was satin black, I prefer high gloss look for this car... it is not stock and will sand and polish dash like the car.417604176141762

Glossy looks nice but I wouldn't want the sun in my face
I went carbon fiber hydro dip with a satin clear

To all, thanks from r the info, I wanted to know if anyone has had success chemically stripping their dash and not what I should paint the dash with... The dash was satin black to start with as I stated and clearly I didn't want that, I don't paint something low gloss to hide imperfections and being a vertical dash I wasn't concerned about glare, I wanted polished cleared glossy black and now have it... as for the original question I did use a chemical paint stripper and was very successful, assuming it was an ABS plastic (thanks Dave) I was able to use a chemical paint stripper with limited time and took the dash all the way to original substrate, then treated the plastic with an adhesion promotor, urethane primer, sanded with 500 wet and bc/cc black and now polished. If this subject does come up again a chemical paint stripper will work without distortion of the dash.

And the hydro carbon fiber looks great, have a buddy that does hydro graphics and considered that as well

I LOVE the snap that that gloss black has, and it has me tempted to do it, but I did it once to my 69GTO vert and the sun glare really got to my eyes and it was always as though the sun was burning one spot in my eyes. How did you find the glare?

I've only had it out a few times this week but quite a bit yesterday in mid day sun and it's been fine... There has been absolutely no glare issue. I have a dash cover on the very top but the dash being so vertical in the car it hasn't been an issue, I will have the car out all day today with a car show during the day and cruise-in this evening so will really know more after today as it's supposed to be sunny all day... I absolutely love the look from the outside of the car and even more from the drivers seat, will update better after today.

I also left the vents, glove box button and small 1/2" surround around the stereo/vent controls in semi gloss for a little contrast

Semi gloss has been the best for me.
