So are we supposed to believe the published treadwear rating of 200 UTQG? I know the Viper specific Kumhos are slightly different than the standard V720 and were advertised to have a stiffer sidewall, and obviously less tread grooves. However has the compound been softened as well?

I ask because im trying to understand how it outperforms tires with much lower TW ratings, such as the few reports of running quicker on the Kumhos vs Hoosiers (in the closest dimensions).

Ideas?

Tread wear ratings are not standardized in the industry or between manufacturers. They can call it what ever they want, which tends to be influenced by marketing more than engineering.

They are more like a 60, more like a Trofeo R. That's why the Kuhmo's are banned at so many racing events

Interesting, so does this ban only apply to the ACR Specific Kumho V720s or the whole lineup?

Just depends on the organization I guess. For example SCCA banned them all. (as far as 200 treadwear anyway I'm sure you can run them in the unlimited classes etc)

As noted above, the number is as much about strategic politics than an empirical rating that conforms across all brands.

Short answer from AZV = "more like 60"

Lots of sneaky tires out there like the Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R tire has a 100 tread rating, it's more like 20. The Porsche specific Cup 2 R's are rated at 140 but more like 20 as well.

How do Toyo's R888R tread rating compare?
