I've read that discoloration from exhaust is a common issue and high flow cats can resolve this. I have been looking to purchase a low mileage Viper and am wondering if discoloration has any indication on how the vehicle has been driven? Is it less common on a White Viper that has been driven around town on the weekends vs. the track? Is it guaranteed to happen without making exhaust changes on White specifically? Your thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

My white ACR is only a weekend driver, never tracked, and the sill insert door hinge covers have yellowed. They yellowed fairly quickly into ownership. The sills themselves did not yellow, only the desperate insert piece that covers the door hinges. It is unavoidable.

It'll pretty much happen with any Viper over time in stock configuration.. it will be more apparent on lighter colors than darker colors. these cars are as close to racecar as you can get and have a license plate.. its not an indicator of how it was driven.

BTW: I think the discoloration is cool looking!

Pretty much guaranteed to happen with stock cats. It's just a matter of time. Dark colors will help as mentioned previously.

Common since 1992. VERY common. IT'S THE CATS.............. You'll get a 'toasted marshmallow browning' near the cat cocoon, forward portions of sills.

Sitting and idling can be almost as bad as tracking. Aggressive drivers get more toasting..... sedate drivers get less...

David E. Davis cooked bacon and fried an egg on the sill of a white Dodge 1996 , and did a story on it in Automobile Magazine.

DOOMED TO HAPPEN to some degree, on all but Black and Sapphire. MANY CARS got a warrantee re-paint on sills !

HF Cats can lower sill temps by 150f, and if installed early enough can prevent the problem on street cars, and minimize the issue on tracked cars.

Our best success is on SRT10 cars. FOUR cats become 2. Direct bolt-on, and cheaper than a repaint, and more comfortable in cabin.

high flow cats can fix the problem. I've seen it in Red and White. Never saw it on my graphite '14 and it was tracked some. I know of folks that have had it fixed under warranty.

As Jon B says High Flow cats will fix the problem. I had the problem on my 2014 White GTS. Usually happens to the piece that is called the "Hinge Cover". I ordered new ones (they were actually pretty cheap) and had them painted. I opted for new ones as they were cheap and I had less down time this way. I didn't have to remove the old covers and then wait for them to be painted. Now I have a spare set if I ever need them. My Viper Tech changed them out and added more insulation underneath where the cats are close. Used High Temp adhesive to secure it. Also the insulation that the factory installs in the side sill tends to detach and move down some thereby providing less protection. Also used the adhesive to reinstall and secure the factory insulation.

My white 2015 started to discolor at only 3000 miles. Got the high flow cats from Jon B coupled with stock mufflers....problem resolved. I put 1000 miles on them and absolutely no discoloration. And a surprising seat of the pants pickup in power too. I wouldn't believe it unless I experienced it first hand. No check engine light either. Nice quality pieces.
