View Full Version : Dreaded Window Regulator Problem

I have read about this and knew it would happen sooner or later. Put my drivers window down and when I went to put it up it only went half way up and made a funny noise like a gear was stripping. Luckily I was able to pull it up with my hand. I am leery about attempting myself as I have read it is a difficult job.
Any idea what the parts cost, so I know if the shop I take it to is ripping me off?
Thanks
Gary

I did my driver window three days after I got my car haha

It's a pain, but it's not the end of the world.

The cost is about $400.00 for a window regulator...labor will be extra.

Just put in a regulator over a weekend. I put in a repair kit on a new one, so it wouldn't break again. I dont remember who kara them, have to look at receipt when I get home. Also put sound deadening in the door. All in all took me about 2 hrs.

If your interested, I Have a NOS Mopar Driver Side Window Regulator and also the window kit. Will sell for what I have in them as I sold my Viper this year. If you're located close to Central Ohio. I'd even put it in for you. I have the experience!! Don't ask me how!

I did this regulator repair kit. It's a metal band that sits behind the plastic regulator pieces that stiffens things up. If yours is broken, the idea is to reinforce and join broken pieces together. https://theviperstore.com/Viper5_Products_Parts&Upgrades_Replacement_Parts_Mechanical.htm

Not a hard job at all. Here is the how to post https://driveviper.com/forums/threads/15869-DIY-Window-Regulator-Install-GEN-IV

I paid just under $300 when I did mine. I posted in that thread the part numbers etc. the fix kit that came out after I did mine reinforces the plastic tubes which are the weak point in the g3/4 cars. The plastic tube breaks where it bends in the bottom of the door. The pop you hear is the plastic total separating for the motor assembly.

The whole job took well under an hour. The only scary part in my opinion is handling the glass. The clips get a bad rap but only because people didn’t know they were there or how to release them. Read the how to closely and you won’t break the plastic door panel peice.

When did this come out? Did it work well for you?

It was after I did mine, so in the last year or so. I was thinking about doing this as a preventative measure. It certainly can’t hurt a non-broken regulator. Interested also in hearing how the repair of a broken one worked out from Zubik.

Options are good. Thanks.

My passenger window has had an issue since day 1.
When its been lowered all the way down, makes THAT noise raising it up. But no noises as long as I only lower it half way.

Wondering if the DSE Boss-Kit would resolve it or if I need that repair kit?

The boss kit replaces the bosses that are plastic with something more sturdy. The bosses attache you window to the regulator. Your noise is the regulator plastic piece breaking or being broken. You need the repair kit. I'll try to take some pictures today tomorrow to explain what happens to the regulator.

Great information!! Thanks everyone for your input. So do I just need the window boss kit, or that and a new regulator?
And who sells the parts?

Thanks!

You can just get the new regulator and bypass the window boss kit. But you'll probably be replacing it sooner or later. It's best to do both since the job is a PITA! See above for the window kit ( Doug Shelby ) and Mopar or me for the regulator or both!

I have never heard of the g3 or 4 needing the boss kit, but maybe it’s a thing. The G5 guys have talked about the boss kits it seems more common than the regulators.

Here are some pictures. I have a broken passenger regulator. One can see the plastic housing torn. That's what you hear when clunk happens the worm gear moves outside of the confines of the housing, making noises. In the second picture I just pulled the plastic housing apart to show the worm gear. This failure is kind of like a hernia with the guts just spilling out :eek: 39793

The repair kit attaches to each end of regulator and center section. Some minor disassembly of regulator required, 3 screws. Then the whole of the regulator housing gets bound to metal with heavy duty electrical tape. The idea is to prevent movement/flex of plastic housing. If there are cracks/tears, it should hold then in place like a cast so the inner worm gear can work properly.

I dont have any pictures of the kit installed, but I will when I put it on my driver one. I bought a passenger regulator almost a year ago, prior to knowledge of this repair kit. I put the repair kit on the new one, so it will never break. I would probably just repair my regulator and pocket the difference if I was to do it again.

I've replaced a couple regulators on my wife's Jeep with the exact same failure mode.

I don't know anything about these, but they are another option:

OK, I have a 2001 RT/10 convertible. Window only goes up and down about 2 inches and makes a gear stripping noise, no loud bang or anything. Is there a gear inside the regulator motor that I can replace? Or is there something else making this gear grinding sound? Thanks for any help with this.

So question to make sure I'm understanding. If when I'm lowering my window and hear that dreaded sound I can get the repair kit and avoid a whole new regulator??

Zubik

I really think so. Unless the damage is catastrophic, I think it should be fine. Either way, I would put a repair kit on a new regulator kit anyway.

Mopar price for a new regulator is $460 each. Who knows how long they will still stock them?

I see that the repair kit can be bought with special tools. At what point are they needed?

Zubik

It came with some small pliers and screws/bolts. Def did not need the pliers as I got a ton of my own. The only special tool I used was a dremel. On one side one of the repair kit screws was interfering with the window. I dremelled a bit of the screw down to solve that. When I did the other side, I just flipped that nut/bolt around so this would be a non issue.

For those who don't know or haven't read the full how-to article on replacing a regulator (I used the repair kit on mine) here is a video I did to show the symptoms of a broken regulator on my gen 3

Mine had a clunk on winding up. It would only clunk if I lowered the window all the way, but not if I didnt go beyond like 80%

SilverACR

Mine made noises and clunks for a while until it finally made a loud Pop and then didn’t go up straight again. Once the plastic tube totally separates it is done done.

Zubik -

Thanks for posting the pictures of the window regulator repair kit as it made more sense once I delved into the project. I thought it was a daunting task but was able to complete it with the helpful posts on this forum.
