View Full Version : horn is haunted

So I'm sitting watching the tv and my 2013 LE in the garage chirps the horn. Several minutes later the horn again goes off and stays on. I get in the car, tap the horn button and it stops. 5 minutes later the horn goes off again. I tap the horn button again and it ceases. Now I try the panic button on the key fob and that sets off the horn and stops on the re-tap. Lights flash and horn beeps when I lock. All the doors, hood and rear hatch are fully closed. Batteries in fob were just changed and all seems normal. Soon the horn again goes off so I removed the #13 fuse (horn). I guess I could go on without a horn (can't remember last time I used it) but would like to find the cause. Any ideas?

If hood and hatch switches are OK, consider below:

Bad horn pad...saw this on a 2016 ACR recently. I am told that due to the way it's made, the fix requires a new airbag...retail cost over $1,000.00 for parts alone.

I would suggest you take this to s dealership with a Gen V trained tech on staff.

That's super weird!!

Let us know what you find. Steve and the horn pad makes sense, but since there's other ways to activate the horn aside from the manual switch, that's a +1 for the dealership.

What about a wonky clockspring? I had to replace a lot of those for all kinds of problems back in my wrenchin' days.

Don't let the dealer just order the "easiest to replace" part. Make sure that if they swap it and the problem isn't fixed, you get free comebacks forever.

I should have mentioned that an experienced Viper Tech diagnosed this horn pad problem on a 10 quite recently.

Steve, if you remember, Paul's problem was his Electronic Entry Module. Same issue but his is a Gen II

...now that you mention it...
And, to your point, Dave...I have had funky horn issues occur after a short drive in our 01 where the horn blew when I opened the door, blew when I closed the door. Knowing the battery was getting up in years, I tested it...found low voltage so I changed it immediately, and the horn problems disappeared never to return.

That said, the Gen V's have a lot of quirks to drive one nuts !! :)

Can't be the battery as it is only a few months old and always on a tender. Will have Viper tech take a look as I have both the 10 year extended warranty plus an additional Chrysler extended warranty that should cover any repairs.

The early Gen 5 viper horns would go off whenever they felt like it. Mine would especially after I drove it and occasionally while driving. Talk about embarrassing. I just pulled my fuse. There is a TSB for it and the dealer orders a new horn switch assembly and airbag. My buddy had his 13 Launch Edition done with the TSB. Worked for a few months, now its back to honking again. He asked me which fuse to pull this time. I think this is why Vipers dont honk 3 times for a roll race lol. They either give the other guy the hit or wave their arms 3 times!

We had a couple of Gen V customers with this issue and unfortunately my AARP mind can't remember the fix. For some reason it did not seem that hard , but hopefully someone else will chime in or maybe Mark J. will see this note and hopefully his younger brain will remember the issue? He is super busy with our new Bentley Store , so he does not wander over here as much as he used to , so I may try and catch him over the next few days if no answers from anyone?

I think Policy Limits had the same problem on his first Gen V as well.

Yes he did, but can't remember what the fix was?

What needed to occur was a replacement of the airbag assembly. Run a search and perhaps you will locate it. You are correct in the fuse number for the temporary fix. Fortunately nothing else is tied into that fuse. However, the vehicle will not pass state inspection that way.
