View Full Version : Gen 1 Road trip and top speed with soft windows hard top questions
Hi guys, glad to be on this forum. I'm glad to have found a site for actual owners!
Few questions for you veterans...
1. Track questions- What is the top speed a gen 1 can handle with the following options
a. No roof, no windows
b. Hard roof, no windows
c. Hard roof, soft windows
d. Hard roof, hard windows.
I know this is a goofy question and there will not be a single, solid answer. I'm mostly wondering if any of the combos listed above will CREATE problems at high speeds. It seems like a window or roof ripping off a vehicle that is traveling quickly could be dangerous and I'm pretty sure I've heard of issue with at least the soft windows.
2. ROAD TRIP!!!! In a couple weeks we are taking a 1400 mile, multiple state road trip. The car is stock. Other than the obvious, are there any gen 1 specific things to keep in mind? Any comfort ideas/suggestions of unusual things I should bring to make the trip better?
Thanks in advance and thank you for having me.

Road Tripping:
Drive with top and windows in place and the A/C running. Remove them when you get to your destination. This gives you valuable trunk volume. Soft items can be stowed under and behind the seats.

A spare birdcage in the glovebox would not hurt. They are cheap enough and a common part to break.

2 soft bags will fit in the trunk along with soft top and windows. Not easy, but will fit! Enjoy the Journey!

I wish I could do a long multi-state road trip....just can't figure out how to sleep at night with the Viper outside in a motel parking lot! Sounds like a blast though, good luck and have fun!!

I have taken many trips. No problem with or with out windows. Like the other post said, more room in the trunk without the windows in, i never did. You have to pack a few small bags to tuck in under the tire and and on both sides. I have taken a suit bag and laid to across the tire ( windows in trunk ) . Get your self ( i did ) a small piece of 1/4 " wood and make a cut out to go on top of the tire. 3822238223

Viperman 4125 -- wow , what a cool addition to this thread and after the picture of your innovation it is time for the next step .....................................why haven't you joined VOA , we need this type of simple brilliance to come out here and at your Regional Events!!!!!!!
PS - do check , then double check, that the top is super securely latched!! Over the years the speed was not a problem , but we saw numerous issues of owners rushing the install and losing a top at speeds of 60 -70 mph.

That is a great idea Viperman, one I'm definitely going to have to do! I think the trunks are plenty big and have been able to pack mine with a lot of stuff. Here its packed with everything needed to do the headgaskets and there was still room to spare.
As far as top speeds with roof in place I believe there is a section in the owners manual that has "recomended speeds" with the soft top in place, I did not bring my RT/10 to work today or I would go check it.

Stop at motels that aren't visible from the main highway. Get a room on the first floor with a window facing the parking lot. Arrive early (so you have a choice of parking) and park just outside the window. Make sure your Viper is locked with the alarm functioning. Make sure there are restaurants within walking distance so you don't have to move your car and lose your parking spot. Don't forget to bring your handgun. Sleep tight! :)
