View Full Version : Waze and Wires

I decided to give Waze a try to see how effective the crowd-sourced police warnings were for my morning commute. I got a warning for a hidden police right where I otherwise would have been well above the speed limit otherwise. The officer was there as promised, and not using radar so I wouldn't have picked him up with my radar detector. Since that day, I haven't commuted a day without Waze and it's saved me several times. And it's fun to contribute to the community there, hopefully I've been able to save some others from road debris and tickets as well.
But have to plug my phone in as well as my radar was causing a mess of wires that drove me crazy. I just finished fixing the issue so thought I'd share pics in the hope that it's helpful.

First step was to power my Passport Max from the rear view mirror...thanks to all who documented that process.
Part from RadarMount.com...

I soldered the wires from the radarmount to the wires that came in the glove box. Found the following vid helpful, recommend watching the full video before going to Home Depot.

I also really like the WizGear air vent mounts, puts the phone up closer to my line of side. It's also easy to flip between portrait and landscape with this setup, which is a nice addition.

Lastly, I fed the USB cord between the plastic mount surrounding the screen and controls, and the leather trim. Not to hard to get it in there, and I really like the fact that the wires are mostly out of view.

As with all automotive bezels, it really depends on the sensitivity of your nerves when very expensive plastic starts to make creaking noises

I like waze, have used it for a while now. One problem is cops are using it here in FL to add false alerts! I use it while riding and love the object in road ahead better than the police ahead!
Wish waze would work on the car apps. Doesn't work in my F150 either (from the cars apps).
I also have a Max360 with the escort live, which is the same theory. Love it.
Nice clean up btw.

I've been using it a while it's very good, but of course not 100%. It integrates into all Ford Sync3 v3.0+ so I've used it in my Focus RS after I updated and it is really nice to have it integrated into the car. iOS 12 will allow it to be added to CarPlay also when it is released.

Started using Waze about 7 years ago and never stopped! Combine that with a Passport 360 for peace of mine and those sneaky police officers.

Our software is currently NOT compatible with systems running software version 16.51.xx or newer. Customtronix ICOS RAX USB conversion converts the Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep/Ram uConnect 8.4A/AN 2013/2014/2015/2016/2017 from other regions (ROW/NA/MX/CA) into EU standard with a simple USB upgrade/conversion. You can do this in situ. No need to remove anything from the car. (software links distributed via email). Supported languages are English, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, German, Polish, Portuguese, Turkish, Brazilian, Portuguese and Russian. Our standard conversion enables you to use map databases of Europe and parts of Russia. As well as ROW FM-radio steps. For more info on conversion check our Download Center and our RAX.

Important points about conversion:
Works on all versions and models!! (Rx3/Rx4 ROW/NA/MX/CA)
2016-2017 cars can only have the SRT if they are SRT cars (from factory). 2013, 2014 and 2015 cars can have SRT.
DAB radio can be activated on request, make sure to check that your car has a DAB antenna installed (95% of all cars have not). If not, error codes can cause problems..
Cars that come from USA/Mexico/Canada and that have radios with VP3/VP4-NA, -MX or -CA as model number can not have DAB because these radio versions have different hardware lacking DAB functionality.
NO NEED TO SEND US THE NAVIGATION RADIO, ORDER OUR SOFTWARE CONVERSION.
Before finalizing your order, make sure to use the free text field to inform us of the VIN-numbers you would like to purchase licenses (tokens) for.
Please see below for an example:
USB-stick-1
Type the VIN numbers of the cars whose navigation systems would like to convert in field “A”. If you need more space, enlarge the message box by dragging the corner of the box (B)
Dealer?? Create a dealer account to view dealer prices!!
Following designation codes that we can do:

VP3 ROW RJ3
VP4 NA RA4 (USA)

Have you actually tried this?

I actually didn't remove or disconnect anything. the USB cord is cloth wrapped so it was relatively easy to push it in to the crevice between surfaces. Some areas are looser than others but I didn't feel I was having to add too much pressure.

Ideal would have been to get Waze on the built in but sounded too involved. One solution had you install an Apple TV in your glove box, stream to it from your phone and display the output on screen, but control from phone. I'm very happy with the phone on the vent. Other than it blocks the AC a bit, not good when today should get up to 116 degrees in AZ.

What about the dedicated power source built into the rear view mirror? I haven't messed with that yet, but I've been told it's there and ready to plug into (mostly for radar detectors).
Off topic, Waze drives me crazy. It's constantly diverting people through my neighborhood and I'm a grumpy old man who hates people driving in front of my house or tailgating me when I'm driving out of my road.

That sounds like you are really angry at your city and highway/road planners.

That sounds like you are really angry at your city and highway/road planners.
When you live in a canyon that has really narrow twisty roads and you've got a sheer rock wall on one side, and a 30 foot drop to a creek on the other, with few turn-outs and lots of blind corners, traffic can get annoying. Especially the tailgaters driving ricers who want to do 70 in a 35 zone. No way to pass anyone, and with bikers around every blind corner, the "commuters" from out of the area don't know that they need to have some patience. I think we've had around a dozen bikers either killed or seriously injured since I've lived up there, and it's never the locals who squish them. It wasn't too bad a situation until people started getting routed through the canyon to get to work a couple of years ago - now, it's just a plain mess and there's nothing the planners can do about it other than make it a gated private road. That's not going to happen anytime soon.

Interesting. I have an early 2016 build F150 and had to replace one usb to support more apps (specifically dont recall what it was). Helped for many more apps, like maps et al, but no waze. Not sure of build date, I will check later and maybe update. That sure would be nice. I was told Waze and Google dont get along. Maybe they have kissed and made up!
Thanks for the insite.

If you have the updated usb you just need to update the Sync3 software to the newest version through Ford website and it should just work. Ford forums should be easy enough to find if you run into any trouble.

No I don't have the jailbreak thrax 8.4 uconnect in my Viper because I don't daily drive it. I only drive it at the track or carving up mountains. I did jailbreak my Range Rover L405 full size to add pioneer xm nav traffic to that screen since that's what I daily drive. I love nav traffic over waze btw. But if you daily drive a gen v Viper the thrax jailbreak is the easiest way to get waze on your nav screen. I figured there weren't any trailblazers lol. I'm an early adopter, lol, I got my Treo 650 smartphone to mirror to my Nissan Xterra nav screen in 2005, the first smartphone mirror in the US. I love tinkering with stuff! 3359933600

Last time I checked the jailbreak thrax did not have a working version for the Viper platform, perhaps that has changed recently.
