View Full Version : To the lucky Viper owners able to purchase the 12 to 18 Speaker Upgrade Kit

From what I've read, the kit came with three 6x9 subs of which many making the upgrade only needed two.
Who has an extra one they would part with? I'm feeling pretty lucky to have recently found everything but one sub, all of which I received today.
I thought I has a sub nailed down on Ebay, but my order was cancelled today, and it's back on national back order..

I had the exact same thing happen this week. I need 4 of these things. Hoping they come off backorder some day. Also still need one of the upper door grilles which is another unicorn part for this upgrade.

I have an extra drivers side, which is probably the one you already have!?

Thanks. If my driver's side doesn't ship, I'll check back with you.

Sounds good.
FWIW, I heard the upper door speaks are supposed to be back in stock on 7/20.

That's great news. Although, without the 6x9's, isn't much point at the moment for me!

I wish I could help - I bought everything individually and I just slipped in before things went on backorder again. I'd suggest highly that when they tell you that it's on national backorder, you take the option of paying for your order and just waiting. I went through this with Mopar Online Parts - they sent me a note about everything being on backorder, and they gave me the option to allow them to charge my card and get in line for when things become available. I was shocked when everything shipped within a couple of weeks.
As far as the kit having three subwoofers, I'm not sure the current kit does that. I think they ship with two subwoofers because the more recent cars came with a sub on both the passenger and driver side. Not totally sure about that, but I think it's true. Strangely, I think the recent kit came with an extra speaker for the center of the dash. That, too, seems to be unnecessary because I think all the recent 12-speaker cars came with a center speaker standard. Moot point because the "current" kit is on perpetual backorder. I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Didn't the early upgrade kits have 3 of each speaker? At least the pic that accompanied the upgrade kit shows three of each and several spoke of having extra speakers. My hope is that there is a current/former Viper owner out there who upgraded several years back and has a dusty 6x9 sub in their garage looking for a new home!

If it were me, I'd just go ahead and install everything and only do the sub on the driver's side. The biggest hassle looks to be taking the doors apart and removing the door panel - the subs behind the seats look to be easy to replace. Get the dealer to re-program so the right sales code is in the system, and you'll at least be ready to pop the passenger speaker in really easily. That'll get you to 90% of the way there, and it'll still be a huge improvement.
I'm sure someone out there has the extra speaker from their kit - that's a good place to start. I do think they changed the speakers right around 2015 or 2016, though. Not sure if it was just a part number change, or if it was a material change. Hopefully someone will chime in. If you get an "old" speaker that sounds different from the "new" speakers in your car, that might bug you.

Planning to tackle the door speaker/grills tonight. There is a pretty nice "step by step" on http://www.billswebspace.com/viper.html that walks you through the process. I even bought the fancy trim removal tool!

Thanks for this!! I need to have the door panels come off to replace the window bosses, so I was thinking of trying to work a deal with my Viper Tech to kill two birds with one stone, but I might just try and do it myself. I'm just super paranoid about breaking things or marring things on this car. I'm good with engine/drivetrain/wiring/mechanical - but I'm all thumbs when it comes to a fancy interior. I can't count the number of times something didn't pop loose the way it was supposed to, and I ended up with a broken trim tab.
What did you do for screws on the door speakers? Did you get the Mopar parts, or were you able to find ones from OSH or Home Depot? From what I can see, a short Torx T20 screw should do the job, but I've heard from a few people that the length of the screw is a big deal, and don't forget to include either a star washer or something similar to keep the screw from coming loose. Apparently the Mopar part has everything needed, but I unfortunately didn't get them... Now, I'm totally against paying $17 for shipping for four stupid screws, and my dealer doesn't stock them.

Martin, I used the guide referenced above when I put my kit in. It is very easy. I actually had more trouble with the speakers behind the seats but I think being a bigger guy had a lot to do with that. I did the doors without removing the panels completely. Patience is not in my vocabulary but I made it through without any casualties.

It was really as smap with the proper tools. Another $10 well spent.

I spent the $44 for the 4 screws and 4 spring clips. I bet it's cheaper in the long run than trying to find the correct hardware elsewhere. As soon as I installed the first upper door speaker, I knew it was money well spent.

I ordered the upper door grilles from moparparts.com about six weeks ago and they were on back order. I kept the order alive and two days ago received a tracking number for both grilles, arriving on Monday.

Both grilles shipped on Wednesday from moparparts.com. They show that I will have them Monday.

ALL cars, even the three speaker barebones ACR-E have the middle dash speaker already installed. It's the exact same speaker as the upper door speakers and two rear speakers with different mounting plates. The speakers themselves are interchangeable.

While I wait for the correct sub, I found what appears to be a VERY similar replacement out of a 2015 Grand Cherokee. May be exact if the Harmon kardon pn is 36670D. Top pic is the Viper sub. 33425
