View Full Version : GenV (possibly Gen3/4?) racing brakes, who wants them?

Feeler...

If there were a kick butt 6 piston 2 piece front 15" rotor set up with a re sized 4 piston 2 piece 14" rotor racing brake system that was designed specifically for the Gen5 Viper, S.S. lines and race pads, (possibly retrofit to the Gen3/4 based on wheel selection), how many of you would be willing to spend the money (approx. $6500?) for a dedicated race brake upgrade? Oh and yes the color would be exclusive to the Viper!

I'm definitely interested for my Gen IV ACR. The only thing that would have me more interested is if we could do carbon rotors, especially if you could get the price to around $8k carbon front/rear.

Isn't that same setup about $3500 from Brembo though?. Not a dig, just curious as to the difference between what you are talking about and what is already available.

Won't be a Brembo product, more racing spec caliper and the pistons would be sized correctly to optimize on track performance and balance so we would not have to use different compounding pads to alter F/R bias, I guess that is what I meant by specifically for the GenV. This is for the front and rear also, I think the high end Brembo kits are closer to $4K each end.?

Ok thanks. That makes sense. And I noticed the Stop tech upgraded sets are closer to what you quoted too. One last question. Why would I want to buy rears.? When you get the 6 piston fronts, wouldn't a person just move the 4 piston fronts to the back?. Thanks

The rears will be sized correctly also for balance and the will look the same as the front although staying 14".

Why didn't the GenV come with these? ZR1 comes with ceramic brakes and carbon roof. SRT is dropping the ball on this. I would think this is a better option for the GenIV. 6 piston should be standard on the front and SRT should replace all 4 piston GenV sold.

I'm interested to see what you have to offer Mark!

Here is some of the reasons why they are not interested in doing carbon systems;

There are several problems with Carbon that I have heard from brake manufacturers:

First – most OE applications you see out there are carbon ceramic. They require a much larger caliper and pad area. Most cars run 19” front and 20” rear to accommodate them.

Second – In race conditions (or track conditions), you can exceed the max rotor temperatures and expose the rotors to oxidation. The rotor life is killed and the cost of replacement parts is not acceptable to wealthy owners. (Porsche GT# guys are changing to two piece iron rotors for their track cars).

If it was just pure racing, we could go to carbon/carbon rotors/pads. This is different since both are consumables and the entire system/car can be designed to realize the desired results. The cost to run is very high and wouldn’t work for a street/track application.

I’m of the opinion most car companies offer CCM’s to get weight out of the car, but for real track day enthusiasts, it winds up costing much more to maintain and the benefit is not as great as you would expect.

Regarding wheel clearance. I bought a 280mm rotor, 6 piston stoptech BBK, and the brakes won't clear the Sidewinder 1 wheels,and it look's like it won't clear the sidewinder 2 wheels that are on my Gen V too. The inner wheel barrel is too thick. No clearance for the back of the caliper. So I had Jon B order me a set of wheels from Forgeline. They are the GA3 wheels with titanium bolts. The front wheel is a 18x 10.5..

Mark I would love to get 6 piston brakes for the fronts on my Gen V. As the brakes are the Viper's biggest weakness IMO.. Let me know what you come up with. Thank's..

The kit would be designed using a much lower profile race caliper for added clearance and would fit into the stock SWII wheels.

Agree with Mark. Unless you are a Le Mans caliber race team you Don't want Ceramic/Carbon rotors for the track. The amount of money needed for Carbon pads and rotors is mind blowing. The first thing we do to a car that will be tracked or raced that came with Ceramic/Carbon rotors is to swap them out for Steel

I thought I post this here since gen 3, gen 4, and gen 5 sport the same brakes. I plan on doing a 6 piston swap to my Gen V too..
