Couple of questions about my Viper, since I have no prior experience with a Gen 2 to compare it against..

1. I seem to only be getting about 170ish miles per full tank of gas. Is this normal? Just driving around town. I guess that's about 8-9 mpg? Any way to improve that? Unlikely I guess
2. Car came with brand new tires. How many miles of life can I expect? No tracks. Just normal driving.
3. At higher speeds (60ish+) I hear this whining noise, only when I push the gas pedal. My Dodge truck does this as well, after I had the rear end replaced. Is there a chance something was replaced on the Viper that I don't know about?
4. Dealer says they put a new battery in it before I bought it... When I start the car, it definitely doesn't "fire right up" like say, my truck. I don't know how to describe this, it's like it starts kind of weak for a second, then fires up? Is that normal?

Thank you!

1) yes
2) depends on tires and you
3) Not normal
4) Definitely not normal

I would say that the drive line on a viper is pretty noisy so probably normal.. think of it like a jeep wrangler with a giant motor

I'm going to answer these opposite the order you asked them. The climax just works better that way.

4) The PCM must establish TDC of #1 before allowing fire. So the crank will typically make 2 complete revolutions prior to firing. Your situation sounds quite normal. My car is tuned by the best in this business and yes, it does that when firing.

3) I would suspect R&P based on your comment. You didn't state mileage, but it really doesn't matter. Things that can contribute to diff failure are not always mileage dependent. Or, like Trick said, the noise is normal. I've diagnosed other owner's cars and yes, they are noisier than a minivan. Find another qualified owner and take them for a ride to listen.

2) Why of all the things you could be concerned with would tire life be a top 4 question? Really man?

1) Give me all your man cards. All of them. If you whine about mileage in a Viper you should have bought the minivan.

Good points Dave. Do fat chicks help or hurt gas mileage btw?

If you can fit a fat chick in the viper good for you. I had one get stuck in mine at the emmisions testing plugging in the obd tool. She burnt both backs of her legs and almost ripped my freaking door off pulling herself out. Mind you ... this was all after I warned her about the rockers, and not to lean on the console, and even told her I would be happy to plug it in for here so she didn’t have to touch my car. Poor door hinge hasnt been the same since.

Dude, she got away? Does anyone have a write-up on how to avoid that?

Whining noise when on the gas at 60+ is your rear diff. Many of us Gen 5 guys had this issue (I did) and had replaced under warranty.

Since you're long past warranty - you can either live with it, or rebuild/replace on your dime. With our Dana 44 HD diffs, there may be some minor whine (even my new one has a little) but very loud, or howling is not normal.

Thanks swexlin, that's what I figured, and yeah Dave, R&P is what I figured as well ... Like I said, had the rear diff on my truck replaced and it does the same thing, but was told that the noise is ok... It's not horrible or anything, sounds like like my truck, so I guess I can live with it for now.
