View Full Version : Just moved from a gen3 to a gen5

I sold my gen3 Coupe conversion car last year. I had the car for 4 years. I loved the car but wanted a change.
Bought a GTR, the car was fast, just boring to drive. It only made it 6 months.
I found a few gen5’s locally. I decided on a 2013 GTS in Black with track pack, Laguna interior, 18 speaker stereo, and red seat belts. Car has 11k miles on it. I love the car. Right when I pushed the start button I heard the familiar sound of the wonderful V10. It drives so much nicer than my gen3. The interior is such an improvement over my old car. It feels light years ahead of the other car. I’m so glad to be back in a viper.

Congrats! Like you, I went from a 3 to a 5. What a different (and better) animal, right? Beautiful car. I have about 13,000 miles on mine now. Assuming it has had all the recalls done, including the important R28/29? You should the powertrain warranty extension in place then.

Congrats. IF they are on OEM tires, so you might want to look for replacements. Track pack has the Pirelli crossa I think. They are a good all around tire. I went with R888's as a replacement for my cross's. Great tire with amazing grip, but loud. Also, check the battery. The moment you see any funky things happening on the dash, just replace the battery. I have a 14' and replaced my battery a few months ago.
I also went from a Gen III to Gen V. I've had my car for about 3.5 years now. While I love it, I really want to pick up a 06' coupe to add to the stable. I had a VCA 06' coupe prior and I really miss that car. It was very analog and easy to work on. The new car is easy to drive and the creature comforts are amazing, but I can't help but think about my old car a lot. Maybe one day I'll pick another one up. I don't see myself selling my gen V, as it has sentimental value that can't be reproduced.

Congrats! It looks badass in black! With 11K miles you might have the OEM tires which were probably build in 2012, I'd check the date codes

congrats on the pick up. Yea corsas maybe dry rotting by that time. I went with slightly narrower pilot super sports for replacement tires

Congrats! I just got into a Gen V myself. Have a Gen 2 as well.
Enjoy the car! It's gorgeous! Nothing shines like a black car.
+1 on the tires. I have a track pack car and it had just shy of 9K miles on it when I got it. The tires on there had the original 2013 fab date stamp so I assume they were the originals. I went to a new set of Corsa's. The originals were dry and traction was questionable on them. Swapping to new tires was a must.
I'm sure you know.... but swap all the fluids. Engine oil, differential, clutch, brake, PS, transmission.... Grease all the suspension, etc. In the end, on a low mileage car, many folks figure that the fluids are OK... they're synthetic, the can last to the mileage interval, etc. Don't trust that.... swap fluids and you know what's in there.
Congrats again!

Congrats! Owning a black car, do as I did and I guarantee you’ll forever be happy with the decision: get paint correction, then ppf, then ceramic coating on top of the ppf. It keeps the black as good looking (better, really) as new.

Thanks guys. Got a few mods already for the beast. Start off with the easy stuff. Simple K&N swap out. Hated seeing the white filter from the outside through the scoop.

One thing that annoyed me about the gen3 and the gen5 is that the trunk wouldn’t pop up when I hit the trunk button on the remote. Searching around I saw there was a fix for it on the gen5. So happy about this. Bought the trunk lid bumpers from the 17 which have a little spring loaded piece in them. Had to dremel the trunk a little to fit but it was wayyyy worth it. The little things make me happy.

A great move, and a beautiful car. Black is awesome on these cars. My Gen III was black and I loved it.
And yeah, even though I've had mine about a year now, I still can't believe that our Gen V evolved from the Gen III/IV especially when it comes to the interior.

Did the same for the truck myself. Worth the little work. Now the remote trunk release on the key fob makes sense.
I did a few more things as well. I swapped out the bolts on the X-brace to be stainless steel with a nice cap as opposed to the cheap painted bolt that rusts in 30 days. Changed the shifter to a shorter piece from MGW to get rid of the huge knob on there. IDK what it is with the designers and why they find it necessary to put these huge shifters in all the generations. At least the Gen 5 was already a short shifter with a knob that did not make it halfway up the dash. :drive:
I added some carbon bits on mine and will be adding the rear spoiler soon. But on the black car... I love the whole blacked out look. I think the gloss black ducts and applique look best there.
Anyway.... enjoy

Definitely look at smoke tinting all your side marker lights. I did it on my car, and it makes a subtle but very nice difference. If you can swing it, get the paint corrected and then clear wrap it. The black parts of my car are so much easier to take care of with the wrap on the car - cuts the maintenance time down dramatically.

There was a clear bra on the front of the car when I bought it. It was pretty beat up so I removed it. I decided to paint correct it (took me 6 hours) and use CQuartz on it right now. Worked awesome on my wife’s Jeep. Man I love black when it’s clean (which is about the first 10 minutes after it’s cleaned lol). Looks so evil!!!!! I will be getting a clear wrap later when I can swing the price for it.
Martin
05-29-2018, 08:58 PM
Yeah, the wrap is super expensive... The only reason I did it was that the Stryker Purple is impossible to match if I got rock chips in it, or if a bird turded on it. Unfortunately, the clear wrap was more expensive than the paint option - but I figured that a re-spray in that color would probably be a $20k experience so it was worth it to just wrap the car. The nice side effect is that the wrap is almost indestructible - I can use a micro-fiber towel and detail spray to clean it off. Couldn't ever do that with any other car - there would always be swirl marks. The clear wrap stays nice and shiny no matter what.
The smoke tint wrap on the side markers looks awesome on darker cars. I had them done, and it really smooths out the lines on the car - the yellow side markers stick out like a turd in a punch bowl on dark cars, but if you smoke tint them, they almost disappear (but are still totally functional at night).

Looks great! The red seat belts are kinda cool, I may steal that idea ;-).
That truck release trick.... Yea, I HAVE to do this. Beyond annoying.
I've been on the fence about doing the carbon rear ducts on my black car. Can't decide if the factory black is a better look or not.....
I also feel like those Carbon door sills with Viper in black would look great on it. Just not sure if I can spend $500 on them

I decided to do a few more mods to the car. The wheel setback was bothering me so I ordered some wheel spacers to the front and rear of the car. While I was at the rear of the car I decided to clean the wheel wells while I had the tire off.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn30/dsg03vert/2013%20viper%20gts/6935BF3C-E45D-49A2-A79D-D0A1B8E8FCB2_zps93keryyv.jpeg (http://s300.photobucket.com/user/dsg03vert/media/2013%20viper%20gts/6935BF3C-E45D-49A2-A79D-D0A1B8E8FCB2_zps93keryyv.jpeg.html)
After a good scrubbing I noticed that the rear brake cooling ducts were just loose above the fender liner. What was up with that? After some research I found out that the on the 13’s they didn’t finish off the ducts.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn30/dsg03vert/2013%20viper%20gts/2F762FDD-F8BC-4347-806D-E3A6C1DF64A8_zpsv19ux9ln.jpeg (http://s300.photobucket.com/user/dsg03vert/media/2013%20viper%20gts/2F762FDD-F8BC-4347-806D-E3A6C1DF64A8_zpsv19ux9ln.jpeg.html)
It annoyed me that they weren’t finished. I couldn’t leave it like that. Found the parts online and ordered them up.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn30/dsg03vert/2013%20viper%20gts/29AD21D8-74D0-42D7-BA20-7EFE6078B40E_zpsmjttudki.jpeg (http://s300.photobucket.com/user/dsg03vert/media/2013%20viper%20gts/29AD21D8-74D0-42D7-BA20-7EFE6078B40E_zpsmjttudki.jpeg.html)
They were pretty straight forward to install. Just had to mark out the mounting holes and drill them out. The only extra parts that I had to get was 4 body push pins to mount them. The scoops came with some nice big zip ties to connect up the tube. Now at least they will do more than cool the fender liner. They actually aim at the brakes now. I’m so much happier now, it doesn’t take much.

if you take the leading zeros off those parts numbers, thats technically the part number. Some part sites had problems with the extra zero

The setback bothered me too. I added front and rear spacers. Used 3/8” front and 5/16” rear hub centric from Ipsco. Also purchased the extended lug nuts to go with them. If anything, I might take them off for a track day.

Luis did an awesome write up on the install!!!
I did it a little different being I didn’t pull out the wheel liners. I was able to make a template to drill out the holes. Then I was able to get behind them enough to tighten the tie wrap and cut off the excess.

Have some more upgrades on the snake. Picked up a set of Ipsco lowering caps. Didn’t want to go too low and always be worried about scraping the bottom all the time. The 1/2” they give will add just enough drop to change the look too.
I measured before and after to see the real world difference. Had 28.5” on the rear.

Not too bad of a job. Off to a local garage to compress the springs and swap out the caps. I’ve tried the outside spring compressors on other cars and didn’t have the best of luck, especially with coil overs. The springs are too tight.

Then everything gets reinstalled and torqued. Pretty easy job for both.
Once on the ground it measured out to 28” in the rear

And 25.75 in the front after it settled in. Giving me a good 1/2” all around.

I remember the drop being closer to 3/4 of an inch. Drive it a bit, let it settle in and remeasure. Another thought, were you cautious to ensure that you aligned the spring with the small notch in the spring cap?

I really appreciate this post but need help. I have a GENV and prior was a die hard never getting rid of my Gen 2GTS until I drove my G5... fast forward for the analog / nostalgia.... I’m trying to understand how a G3/4 fits that bill better than a G1/2

Just did the truck popper myself. Such a great little mod. Still not used to how hard you have to close the truck now. Gotta kinda slam it but it works great. Easily the best money I have spent on the car, besides gas.

Been a while since I have updated on some of my latest mods. Been a long winter and can’t wait for car season to get into full swing.
Added a TA spoiler at the end of last year. Found a Dodge one on the internet and picked it up, don’t know how much longer I could find the real thing. What a beautiful piece. It weighed almost nothing, I was shocked.

I ended up bonding it on like the factory with window adhesive. Went on pretty easy with a little time and patience making sure it was aligned correctly.

The wife bought me a set of splash guards (I know, mud flaps on a viper.....) from DSE that I was wanting. The roads around here aren’t the greatest. I also like how they are barely noticeable looking at the car. Nice pieces like usual from those guys. Love their products. The rear went on using existing holes, the front I had to drill one hole in the wheel housing for a plastic push pin (it also had holes to help retain air flow into the side sill)

I use them as well and my underside sills are showroom new looking. Not a single chip or mark. They also cut down on the grime that accumulates.
On mine with all the black and white contrasts you don't even see them.

Nice splash guards. I just put them on too. The DSE rear guards are the correct length and actually protect the paint...the other ones out there are too short and don’t help much. They look good too.

Next I wanted a new look and some better traction. I purchased a set of wheels from one of our sponsors here, DV8 motor sports. Many of you know Tony and he was fantastic to deal with. He knew exactly what I wanted and the sizes needed to fit perfectly. I ended getting a set of Forgestar CF5V wheels, 19” front and rear (I went with 19” for a future upgrade I’m doing) in the gloss dark bronze color. To compliment that I went with a set of the Kumho ACR tires. Man it all turned out better than I thought it would.

Since I had the wheels off I decided to get a set of the ACR brake cooling ducts for the front a-arms. I Love factory parts and picked them up before they become impossible to find. Super easy to install, they snap right on and have a zip tie to lock them in place.

Looks great. I have a set of them "mud flaps" that I have yet to install. Hell, I've barely driven the car 350 miles since last September. And guess what - it's supposed to be 2" of rain tonight through tomorrow again here.....every time I want to drive, it rains.
I have Expel in the wheelwells, but they still get dinged up.

If you have 18” front wheels I believe you need to trim one corner of it to clear. There is a thread on it.

Those wheels are sweet. And I bet so much easier to clean then the sidewinder II’s.
