Hello all. Very excited to be a part of this community. I'm in St. Louis and am going to buy a Viper out of state. My question would be, if it's an '04-'06, is it ok to drive it back home (300-500 miles), or do you all recommend shipping it? Just curious about putting that long period of driving on the V-10. Thank you!!

As long as the PPI checks out, sure. I drove my 03 home about 500 miles. No sweat.

Pardon my ignorance... PPI? You talking about the insurance?

The mileage is absolutely no issue. Your Viper will hold up under track conditions being pushed to its maximum for hours on end. Why would you have any qualms about your V10 for a 500 mile drive at highway conditions?

BUT, as others have mentioned, and with ANY car that's over 10 years old, you need to have a thorough inspection before you leave. Tires, hoses and clamps, lubricants, coolants, oil, fuses, etc. ALL need to be checked.

That's makes perfect sense. I appreciate that. I will take that advice to heart. Thank you.

Should be fine as long as tires and brakes are ok. Good luck with your purchase and welcome.

Definitely drive it home! A good trip like that will help you get to know your new snake.

Don't be surprised if you get lots of thumbs up and strangers talking to you at gas stop...it comes with the Viper.
If PPI comes clean, Enjoy the ride back home.

I drove mine from Austin TX to Charlotte NC. 1220 miles and enjoyed every minute.

I drove my '96 GTS home 85 of the 87 miles. It died 2 miles from my house. Crank sensor went bad. Replaced it 4 years ago, still going strong today. Could go either way for you.

Definitely drive, just take some breaks and stretch your lower back

Check all fluids before you go.
Hopefully it doesn't have original tires! Might as well be driving on ice if that's the case.

Either way, congrats on the new whip!

Drove my 06 home 400 miles no problems

Well, you won't make it home on one tank of gas, maybe not even two tanks depending on how you drive. These engines aren't made of glass...they were designed to be driven hard.

Thanks for all the advice guys!!! Here is a new thread I just started...:(

I just drove my '04 Viper with 25xxx miles from Dallas back to Saint Louis last night without incident. Today, while getting on it a little bit (nothing crazy), I lost 2nd gear. Just grinding and clattering sounds. 2nd gear engaged just revs the engine. The other gears are fine. It was only a couple more miles from home thank goodness. Is my tranny shot?

Sorry to hear, I just picked up an 04 and drove it home 800 miles last month and put another 700 on it this month with no isuess ( car had 19,500 on it beforeI drove it back) . Hopefully one of the techs on here can help you out.... might be something simple, just keep your fingers crossed
