View Full Version : A Heads Up If You Are changing the Exhausts

If you are changing the exhaust or opening up the sills, inspect the oem insulation. The OEM insulation in the sills is split, the top half is fixed in place, the lower part is glued to the sill. I had a tinny sound/vibration coming from the right sill, when I removed the sill the lower insulation was basically loose or floating in the sill. The loose insulation was obvious during deaccel.

Details:
1. The insulation is glued with a two-part Loctite high temp adhesive/epoxy.

2. In my case the factory glued the insulation at top and the bottom of the sill. They used four 1" patches of glue at both the top and bottom.

3. As stated, the right side insulation was floating in the sill. After an inspection of the left side, I found only two of the eight adhesive patches were holding the insulation in place. The left sill was loose enough to also change or alter the tonal quality of the exhaust.

4. In retrospect, the loose insulation in both sills was dramatically altering the sound of the exhaust.

5. I bought the Loctite adhesive from Prefix, the two tubes (one package) contain 3.4 oz of adhesive. To fix both of my sills it is going to take at least three packages of the adhesive. Once you glue the insulation in place there is an major difference in the way the sill feels, basically, the sill and the insulation become one part. I found that I had to use five patches of adhesive at the top and the bottom of the sill.

6. In order to get the insulation tight against the sill so the adhesive grabs both parts you will need some clamps that have a deep reach.

I need some of that glue. Mine rattle at idle only. Above idle there is no rattle

Jack how much of the glue are you putting on?
The tubes we sell are more than enough to do a car, typically we can do a couple cars with one set of tubes

The factory had a total of 8 patches on one sill and 7 patches of adhesive on the other. Like i said the majority of them had come loose. I am putting ten patches of adhesive on each sill. Each patch consists of a 4" length (of each tube) of adhesive mixed and spread into a 1" circle. You cannot make the application of the adhesive too thin because it does not make full contact to both surfaces. I am not using any more than what the factory used in each spot, just adding more spots for the adhesive.

My full ARH exhaust is completely ceramic coated and wrapped with DEI titanium exhaust wrap. Wondering if it would be fine to just remove the OEM shielding in the sills so I don't have to deal with the problem. Mine are rattling too. The coating and wrap really hold the heat in so i'm guessing it would not damage the sills if I remove the OEM shielding.

We usually do the 1" circle as well, the biggest thing we found is the area that is scuffed for adhesive promotion does not line up with the adhesive!
That seems to be the root cause of most of the time of them coming loose.
We make a hershey kiss shape of the glue and use squeeze clamps to hold it while the adhesive sets up.

In my case the adhesive adhered to the sill which was black primer coated. In all cases it broke free of the insulation. I tried roughing up the insulation, but, that does not work well.

It is interesting how solid the sills feel once they are glued.
