Greetings! I'm starting to look seriously at getting a Viper. I wanted to know when shopping what common problems to look for (particularly what are the signs of damage to the hood or other very expensive parts or signs of engine issues). Also, I understand that getting tires for these cars can be tricky particularly the rear ones. Suggestions on tires would be appreciated (would there be problems with using a different brand for the front vs. the rear if I don't intend to drive it aggressively). My goals with the car are more as a weekend car (maybe take it on a road trip once a year), driving it fairly conservatively (I don't need speeding tickets and I don't want to risk damaging something I am putting my hard earned money into).

Most will keep the same brand tire front-rear. Tires in the 17" and 18" range for the rears can be tough to find when needed. If you go with a set of SRT rims/tires, you get 18" fronts, 19" rears. I have this set for sale in the classifieds I will let go for $2600:

Another thing to consider, are you just curious of 2nd gen as a whole? Or gen 2 RT/10 or do you want a GTS?

I would suggest you to take Some time and browse around in this forum.
You will find all the information you need, from the most commun problems ( really not that many for such a car) to what to look for before buying.
The forum is a endless source of information for new buyers to DIY/shadetree mechanics.
What ever you decide, if a Viper is your dream car, getting one will be an experience you will not forget.
Good luck
