Facing the choice between beginning a regimen of anti-anxiety/stress meds or getting an Emotional Support Animal, I've decided to go with the latter. So after having been a dog lover, but never having a dog (other than a fraternity dog in college), I/we are planning to get a pup (a "companion dog for me). This is a dream come true for me and my family, but being a city dweller, we do have concerns with being able to raise a contented and happy puppy.

Anyway, we're waiting on "meeting" several pups from a January 19th litter. At 5 weeks, we're to visit the breeder and see how it goes.

I'm thrilled and petrified at the same time. I know how many of you all are absolute dog lovers ... I just hope he/she enjoys long topless summer drives ... without destroying the Viper's interior. ;)

Dogs are one of Life's greatest joys if you train them correctly. I have had dogs all my life and have two presently. You will not be sorry. What breed?

In laws and I watch the seeing eye dogs when there trainers take vacations. It is a wonderful help to people in need and the true emotional support animals that are raised/trained locally here for PTSD do fantastic work.

Remember the emotional support animal is only part of the equation, keep in contact with us and you can always send me a PM if you want to talk. Medication can help but that is always a personal choice. I have not used mine for almost 15 years now but it is a struggle I can tell you that.

Getting a dog is a great choice ! We have a program in Oakville with service dogs to help children with autism , grand seizures , anxiety , and other disabilities . It is amazing the positive affect they have ! Look forward to seeing a few pics of your new family member .

Dogs are great, I have two Australian shepherds now. Wish I had gotten them sooner. Definitely a great anti-anxiety/stress relief for certain. The "meeting" is heart breaking, so many cute pups so little time, lol. You'll get attached to all of them!

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I guess having a dog in the midst of a "concrete jungle" is manageable, since there must be over a million dogs living within 2 miles of us. There's at least 3 dog care stores/facilities within 4 blocks of us that take in dogs for daycare, walking, exercising, grooming and probably spa treatments. Then there's Petco 2 blocks away and the Animal Medical Center 5 blocks away. I never even realized how "dogged up" my area was until I began this journey.

I'm just ever so slightly concerned that it won't work for us and I'd be absolutely devastated if we had to give up this future pet for adoption. More stress! LOL.

Easy way to make sure the dog likes you tie a T-bone steak around your neck
kind of adds to the draw. Also remember you will move down one step in the house
chain of command. Scott after you have a furry pal it becomes hard to live without one.
When we are leaving on a trip the dog goes to the doggy motel and the evening without
him is very unreal, no body to talk to and no thing snoring behind the couch. The dog is
another living person in the house to interact with, that never judges and is always glad to see you.
They also act as a stress antitoxin! 30933

I'm a huge dog lover. I have an English Mastiff now, she turns four in June. The funny thing is, she would love living in a city haha She doesn't need an abundance of exercise. After 10 minutes of rough housing, she takes a nap.

Anytime I come home, she's always passed out on the couch. Last night for instance:

My boy is called "Dodge" he is a Bullmastiff x Boerboel (south African Mastiff)

I prefer to get rescue dogs now, there are so many abused dogs out there needing a loving home. Research is key but the right dog will turn up.

His usual position!

City, I'm interested to see the affects it'll have man. I do sense it'll affect you even more than you may think. Was lucky enough to have parents that at an early age always had animals around. Now is the only time I've ever been without one, and my wife and I constantly talk about getting a dog.

It's a great feeling. Like the old saying goes "If I was only half the man my dog thinks I am".

Dogs are the absolute best. No surprise that there is study after study showing the positive effects on both physical and mental health for dog owners. Just make sure to be patient with the puppy, feed it the best food, and raise it the right way. There is tons of online info as to all of that so best of luck to you and congrats.

Here's one of my boys in the Viper:

Admittedly, Vipers aren't the most dog friendly cars, Ruby much preferred our Mustang so she could get her head out of the window, but it didn't stop her coming for a ride

Sadly she's not with us anymore, but her replacement - Connie - also loves riding on her Mum's knee

Dogs are great fun, so rewarding, enjoy!

Some great pics in this thread! I can't quite tell, but when your pup is sitting (or driving), is that a blanket you put down on the seat? I've got some time before we will be taking a drive in the viper, but I AM a bit concerned about seat scratching and wear.

Following up, we're scheduling to pick up our pup on March 30 or 31. Still a little guy. Think we wore him out that day:

Congrats!!! I saw a few pics on instagram too - adorable puppy!

My first ride in a Viper was with a family friend who was also a Veterinarian. He had 3-4 dogs of his own at any one time, typically Golden Retrievers. They all went for rides in his Gen 1!
Towel on the seat is a good idea just in case, but between clipping and the natural sanding-off from concrete sidewalks, his nails probably won't get too long.

Enjoy him! When he curls up like that for a nap, you'll feel your heart rate just relax... it's awesome

Thanks for all the good wishes. And yes, Plum, that's also one of the benefits. As Jesse goes off to college late this summer (you HAVE known her for 15+ years!), this pup hopefully will fill some of the void.

I was always so jealous of those that posted pics of their dogs in their Vipers. Guess I'll have to buy more cloud storage space for mine very soon.

You should know how little time I have at this point. :D The little guy, Otis, is fine. I'm a wreck! So naive and ignorant of what it's like to raise a puppy. Just started training which is helping ... a little. Got to get better with the "crate". Not just when we're in the room, but leaving him alone (out of site) for periods of time. Our breeder (who's incredible!) explained that he should be fine according to the 1 hour / per month equation. So far we're up to about a half hour and he's 2.5 months. :witless:

It's SO much like 18 years ago when my daughter was born! Too often I'm falling asleep at 9PM thinking I'm too old for this!

I'll forward some pics as soon as I get a moment.
