View Full Version : Lowering caps for coil overs

Has anyone swapped out the caps that come with the coil overs for thinner lowering caps?

I have MCS stage 1 coil overs and have the car lowered to where the helper spring is compressed almost all the way. My brother thinks a thinner lowering cap can expand the helper spring a bit more, helping absorb the road a little better.
Basically a thinner lowering cap will alleviate some of the helper spring's compression.

Anyone try this yet?

Have not tried it, suspect it will not change the ride quality. I was under the impression the helper springs are intended to support the main spring on the perch when the shock is fully extended. When the suspension is under normal vehicle load, the helper springs are fully compressed transferring the load to the main springs.

If you're intent is to soften the ride under low compression, perhaps you should look into progressive springs with a wider load rating.

I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to do.

As stated, the helper spring serves one purpose - it takes up the gap that happens when the suspension unloads (droop). Under normal driving conditions, the helper spring is fully compressed, and has no impact on the ride.

When you say MCS stage 1, do you mean you have the non-remote versions with fixed compression damping? If the ride is too rough, that is something you won't be able to fix. You could potentially go with a softer spring though.

Yes, MCS 1WNR suspension.
I think its a combo of having the suspension lowered (helper spring almost fully compressed) and going larger diameter wheels.
I recently lowered the car to remove wheel gap and had to raise the back because the tires kept rubbing the fenders.

I just need to make adjustments on the car as a whole, might have too much pressure in tires too, tires are Pilot sport 4S 19" Front/20" rear @ 38psi cold all around. Going to lower it to 34 tomorrow morning.

I'd start at the factory recommended 29 psi front/rear.

Lol, no kidding I ran it at 31 all around with stock wheels and new pzeros from 2016.

Going to experiment with the new wheel/tire setup and start at 32front/34rear see how that goes. Need to raise the front just a tad too.

Something seems wrong here. I have the same MCS seteup and can drop the car to way lower than what it would be safe to even drive.
What are your front and rear frame heights where you are at now and how much lower would you want to go? I've got down to as low as 3.75" front and 5" in the rear.

I went with 19” front and 20” rear wheels, wrapped with michelin pilot sport 4S.
Wheels are 11.5” wide in the front and 13” wide rear. Tires are 295/30-19, 345/30-20.
The wider front tires+bigger diameter and wider rim is the culprit.

I raised the front 1/4” and driving later today.

As for my original post, there is no way to get a thinner spring cap, but like Steve and sharmut said it doesn’t do anything for absorbing the road.
