How to install gen v hood strut

Need to put a new hood strut on gen v hood. I can get the old one off but how do I compress the new one so it will clear to install it ? Without it compressing some it will not shorten enough to install

Can you put a chain of zip ties around the entire strut to compress it enough? Then just cut the zip ties once its in place.

I tried to compress this thing just by pushing it done and it is super tight. Doesn't seem to compress at all. Bought them from viper superstore

Supposedly putting the struts in the freezer for hours makes them easier to compress.

I think I can take the other strut off and it will allows me to raise the hoood just a bit and install the new and reattach the old strut
