View Full Version : hmmmm Another thinking of going to a Gen V

Typical thread I'm sure. I love my gen 3 and it's been a perfect car to me over the last year but a couple weeks ago I rode in my buddies Gen 5 and it's a whole different animal... Ultimately the worst idea ever because I've been looking at gen V's ever since. Few questions though...

Seems the V's have intermittent motor issues. From the research I've seen this spans all years of this generation. True?

Is there a big market for Gen IIIs? Wondering how long it would take to sell mine with 16k miles on it.

based on here and even autotrader, with the production numbers being as low as they are it's hard to see what demand is. Don't feel like going through all the work to get the car listed only for it to sit there. Just wondering what fellow viper owners may say to this and perhaps ones that have recently sold their Gen III for a similar situation.

thanks team! This forums has been great for support so far

Yes.

There is always a market though price will vary with car's history Many of the "better" Vipers sell privately, behind the scenes. Being part of a local Region is a huge help...selling or selling.

A Gen V is a fine ride, though it has "complexities". A good Gen IV is also a great car!!

In choosing a Viper, proposed use is important.

I appreciate the response.

I contemplated a gen IV quite a few times, I'm just ultimately looking more for the creature comforts that the new age generation has to offer.. Cruise control, refined higher end interior, etc. It just seems like a bit more thought was put into the design of the gen V. I like everything about it. I do need to get more involved with my region though both to help sell mine and possibly find another.

I went from a Gen 3 (which was a good reliable car) to a Gen 5. Whole 'nother level of performance. Just wish the build quality of the cars had improved.

As many here can attest, it is far better to get a great Viper with the help of Regional/National connections than trying to sort a car with a problematic history AFTER the purchase.

definitely. I'm going to keep considering the pros and cons and hopefully make a decision soon. Figured I'd start the process by getting veteran owners opinions. :)

While pondering this situation, you may wish to speak with TRUSTED dealers...Bill Pemberton at Woodhouse and/or John Gastman at Roanoke. They have been Viper-involved at all levels from the beginning....with hundreds and hundreds (likely thousands) of happy customers. They are knowledgeable, experienced, friendly, dependable, trustworthy, and fair gentlemen who go more than "the extra mile" to make one's Viper experience a fun, satisfying situation.

P.S. They both can DRIVE !!

I second that. Call Bill P at Woodhouse. He's probably forgotten more than most of us we'll know. He'll set you straight. Good luck on your path to a Gen 5!

dang! Great deal! I'd want to unload mine first before I begin looking for a V.

Woodhouse is one dealer that is definitely worth looking into. I flew out there from Northern VA just to purchase mine. The entire team at Woodhouse was awesome to work with. Good luck in your purchase.

If you've got concerns about buying a Gen V, I'd definitely suggest working with a reputable "Viper" dealer. I went to Roanoke and left with the confidence I got a solid deal on a vehicle they would stand behind. I too went from a Gen III to a Gen V and have never looked back. Only regret was that I didn't do it earlier.

I'm sure that dealer won't be able to sell the lemon title car at 69k. If I was the buyer I'd offer 65 or maybe even lower.

Plus 1 on bill. Havent even bought a viper from him yet and he spent an hour with me on the phone just talking about our passion. He didnt forget my name when i was contemplating a specific gen 2 either. He also was the first person to contact me through pm in 04 on the other site we dont mention here which shows a professional hustle with class.

Going gen 5 I think may be easiest from 3 to appreciate. Took awhile for me to appreciate the V platform from the raw low end torquey seat of your pants gen 2. Get a viper with recalls done and decide beforehand your risk (warranty or mod). My viper was built around some that failed and as those who know me and my car its been bullet proof and doesnt eat a drop of oil despite the work done.

Selling your 3 will depend on year, color and mileage. Obviously a 03 red 16k will sell lower than an 06 bw coupe. Mods condition and vehicle history also play. However as a natural sales guy I know just because person X fetched 3x,xxx doesnt mean i will not grab 4x,xxx from a different approach to the sale. If the right car shows up and you can get enough tax credit on tradein to mitigate risking waiting and losing the car...Nike...just do it.

Waiting for X delays instant gratification that may not come the way of the person forever waiting.

yeah, mines not the rarest of rare vipers but it's not bad. Super low mileage and a clean vehicle history will help. Plus I don't sell any of my cars w/out all maintenance being up to date even though it seems every car I purchase is missing maintenance updates. Can't sell a car with problems with as many cars as I buy and sell I don't need that karma lol.

I think I could appreciate a gen V the most as I'm younger than some but older at heart. Don't drive very hard out side of the occasional 2nd to 3rd getting on highway. I'm more into the creature comforts that the V has to offer over most anything else.

Ultimately the tax credit would be the reason I'd sell the Gen III prior to. Seems wasteful to was X amount of dollars on taxes when I could get a free tax credit :D

if I had to sell mine with full exhaust / engine dress up / coils / gen IV ACR wheels, I'd probably start the price at 50 and go from there since the car just turned 16k miles. I'm partial though cause every time I hop in it I am in love all over again and am too impatient to go that time w/out one while searching for a V lol

however, when it happens it sounds like I already have someone reliable to call :)
