That was up last week...except it said $65k in upgrades, then it was taken down...now it's $70k in mods.

That seems about right IMO.
I'm guessing he went with that front brake setup to stop the wheel barrel scoring when running 18" wheels on the ACR.
I'd be interested in feedback on that tranny and differential as well.

I built this car. Its very well sorted. Erik at EMI Suspension and I did quite a bit of testing to perfect the Penske F1 suspension.
If anyone is interested feel free to call me as well.

I have been using Donato for trans work for over fifteen years. John was the chief driveline engineer for the Viper in the beginning and through the G2. He just finished a trans for me this week. He probably has been involved in or done more viper auto conversions than anyone. He is located near Detroit.

I bet the guy runs slower lap times than a fast driver in a stock ACR.

How close is a race prepped T6060 to the sequential in the GTLM racecar that was fitted in the racing viper? Ad says this is as close to it gets to Lemans, I understand the suspension is dialed in, just wonder about the transmission and the weight of the car. Anyone know who much the GTLM Viper weighed?

You ever seen these cars at laguna or sonoma? They're normally built with an R1 motor. Would be sick if someone did a 1300cc wf1

Amazing that some of these mods are available but never been mentioned on the forums.

People seem to be concerned about how much other people think their car is worth or if their stripe package will clash with their custom limited edition latte cup.

Hi Dan,
What clutch/flywheel did you go with on this build?

Thanks.

I bet it improved his lap times :)

On one hand, I hear what Darius is saying. For example, you can get pretty decent one on one driver coaching for $1,000 per day so assuming $75K cost of mods, 75 days with a pro instructor will make almost anyone MUCH faster.

On the other hand, I remember getting into photography about 20 years ago and people telling me "Don't buy an SLR until you learn everything there is to know about photography". I ignored it, bought an SLR and learned how to use it within a few months. Even in HPDE, most experienced drivers recommend you start with momentum cars, but there is definitely a few good things you can get out of learning to drive in a high-HP car.

I would be REALLY interested to know how much lap time improved due to the mods (driver and track being the same). If it's anything significant, the mods are worth it.

The rules in GTLM say minimum weight for the Viper is 2,750. But keep in mind their targeting HP levels around 500 and the viper has to run with an intake restrictor. Take Kumo or Ben and put them in this guy's car with that extra 150 hp, use the same tires, might be fairly close for the street car

Does anyone here have any experience with the Wavetrac LSD??

I'm running the OS Giken because at the time of my choice the Wavetrac was not on the market long. I looked at what pro race teams were running and the OS Giken was by far the favorite choice. That may have changed in the last few years, but I doubt it.

Sometimes when a new product like the Wavetrac comes onto the market a lot of tuners will push it onto customers because it has a better profit margin than a OS Giken or Quaife limited slip. If looking for a unit for your car, I'd check to see what the pros run....that is usually the best diff. The cost difference isn't enough to matter in the long run, performance is what counts.

So are you running the OS Giken in a Gen V? I can't seem to find any info on whether these fit on the new Gen's...

Nope, Gen 4.

I'm not an expert on this, but unless running huge power and drag race slicks, I think the stock Gen 5 diff is pretty damn good for road course use. I'm just not a fan of the Wavetrac.

Wavetrac is a torque biasing diff, which means it is open under decel. This is great for autocross, but typically not great for track use where you want to trail brake.

if money were no issue...

So, Does anyone know what the intended purpose for this care was to be?
The suspension sounds fascinating(dual bleed). I was thinking the bleed was on the shaft but couldn't understand how that would work.
They actually have a little write up on this link for anyone interested. This just another option for us over the Big three.

Hey Dan, were the front brake swap just to eliminate the wheel barrel scoring with the 18" wheels?

Thanks.

The car was built for club track days, primarily at Fontana Speedway. The modifications were done to make the client more comfortable in the car and manage tire wear, which was a big issue with the Kuhmo's at this venue and Willow Springs. As a novice driver, his laps times were always with the top of the group and the suspension made the car more predictable.

The changes to the driveline mostly came about because of an issue with the transmission, not going into reverse. Donato did his standard race prep upgrades to the transmission and the fluid was changed from ATF to gear lubricant. The production clutch was modified and the LSD upgraded to the gear driven type which really improved traction out of the corners.

Going to 18 inch wheels and R7 Hoosier tires was simply to manage tire wear. The Kuhmo's were faster but would only last about 3 sessions at Fontana (even with an asymmetrical alignment). The end result was a combination that would allow the tires to last an entire weekend. The new Viper is a very heavy car, that and the Aero Package make it very hard to manage tires. In fact the R7 tires are near the load limit.

The car was fitted with the proper safety items and track aides. Ross Murray rollbar, Crow Belts, Fire extinguisher, Full Race Keeper camera, data system and in car lap timer.

The brakes are factory carbon, with only upgraded lines and fluid. The custom CCW wheels have adequate caliper clearance but race rubber from the track needs to be cleaned form the wheel barrels every weekend or it rubs on the calipers.

We made numerous changes to address heat from the exhaust with headers and Arrow calibration, end result was no heat heat issues what so ever. Power was super consistent with the bolt on package.

The client decided to move on to a purpose built track only type car.

Please PM me directly if you have further questions.

Dan Cragin,

Do you know if he went to one of the porsche clubsport cars, or a Radical or maybe even a Stohr WF1? Also do you come up to Laguna or Sonoma to test your race cars?

I wonder if shaving a little bit off the caliper since it's so close to the wheel will negate having to clean the wheels after every track day?

Dan Cragin
05-10-2017, 12:28 PM
He was looking at the new Radical's, last I checked.

I do go to Sonoma to run a vintage USAC car we built. Our club does run Laguna at times on the no noise limit days. I try to make those.

I would not modify any wheel, to much liability.

Feel free to contact me anytime.
