Have you removed the belly pan to inspect?

Removed flywheel inspection plate? Fluid level in clutch reservoir drop?

That's definitely odd...gear oil smells like no other fluid that I can think of. Is it just when the car is driven hard, or anytime you drive it?

Check the rear end? (axle and pinion seals?)

Sure its gear oil and not rear main oil burning off? Are you saying its totally dry as a bone underneath?

Remove flywheel inspection plate and look around on the front of the trans and maybe stick a finger in there to see if fluid has run down that far. But, maybe it hasn't yet.

Can gear oil smell if trans is low on oil and causing the trans to heat up?

It sure can.

Sounds like the first thing on the "to do list" will be to check the fluid level and inspect the condition of the fluid.

Is there a vent on the diff that is blocked?

It sounds like the right side makes noise. Got it to the shop I will see what was wrong by tomorrow morning

ok well the pumpkin came down and found some broken spider gears in the rear diff... my 3.73 ring and pinion are ok.... so now i have to install wave trac differential which cost like 1600 bucks... FML...

Was it the original diff? The Gen 3 diffs were apparently not all that great...looks like you found its limits.

HAHAHA..... "only have 10,000 miles". Ya a quarter mile at a time! Lol! You should have said "I only have 40,000 passes!" In all seriousness I feel for you bud. At least you will be better than stock now!

Maybe some others will chime in , but I believe the only pumpkin that needs case modification is a Quaife.

Got my car back and feels great.. the wave trac diff is great .. I been launching at every street light and I love how it feels... car is going in a straight line .. No side ways bullshit. Now I need to go to track to see how it performs... I tried racing my friend in his Mercedes c63 which is pretty beefed up and did very well.Watch "2006 dodge viper vs Mercedes c63" on YouTube

Were there any other indicators of gear issues other than the smell?

chicagopd50

Well when I smelled gear oil no... but I took it to the track and then I think I broke couple teeth on the spider gears in the diff.. I drove it home but didn't notice a thing until I tried a launch off the street light by my house which I heard a big clunk/crack. I limped it home and got it towed and saw at least 2 teeth broken cleanly off.. so maybe those teeth were wore out and on verge of breaking off which were probably causing heat issues in gear oil and thus I smelled gear oil.. don't know exactly why I smelled it but there was no leak what so ever.

Nice!! Is there any break in time needed for a unitrax diff? Or is that only needed if you replace the gears? When you going to the track?

Honestly I don't believe in "break in" miles... if the fucking thing breaks in the first mile then it's shit.. that being said. I don't know if there is break in miles like a clutch...as far as going to track I'm thinking end of may.. weather still suck this week.

Yes weather has been crap! I would break in the gears. Just so I don't hear gear whine. They need to go through there heat cycles. It is amazing how hot the diff can get. I just wasn't sure about the posi unit.

The gears are still the original 373 ring and pinion so they've been heat Cycles many times.

Let me know when you're going to the track, I'll meet up with you out there.
