View Full Version : 48 hour rule

I bought my 2014 GTS in June 2014 and until I saw some of the posting about awesome audio, did not realize that SRT had not installed the 18 speaker system called for on both my build sheet and the window sticker. I went to dealer service up the chain to a "DM" who stated that if I did not realize the error in 48 hours it was not SRT/FAC problem. Has anyone ever heard of this 48 hour rule? Seems there are 100's of subsystems that you would never know about in the first 48 hours.

Land of Major Bullshipp !!! If it is on the window sticker and not in the car then Dodge and SRT owe you. Demand to talk to a higher power -- you paid extra for it and if they screwed up , not your fault.

Wtf....
I thought it was the 5 min rule, hmm they're either generous or I'm mixing my rules...
If it were me, I'd laugh in his face, report him to FCA for misrepresentation.

What is the best contact as this guy was a District Manager. Still trying to move forward but having a hard time. Dealership GM is out of town, so any FCA higher up contacts would be appreciated.

I follow the ten second rule when dropping something before deeming it unacceptable to eat, but this supposed 48 hour rule is complete BS. Unless you bought the car used, and the previous owner could have possibly removed the hardware, FCA owes you what's on the window sticker. That's the law, and I'm sticking to it.
EDIT: If they give you a hard time, you can always ask them to just reimburse you for the cost of the 12 to 18 upgrade kit :) Here's a link to one at Amazon. It's only $20,500 at an online store (MyMoparParts.com).

The whole purpose of the Monroney Sticker is for the consumer to see exactly what he is buying! It is a consumer protection sticker to the nth degree.

Tell them to give that 48 hour rule to you in writing. Watch them squirm.

Let's be fair in saying this car is a 2014. I don't know how FCA operates but in my line of work if it has gone outside the warranty period manufactures don't tend to care. If you only had a 3 year warranty and you bought your unit in 2013, you could definitely run into problems regardless of what dealership you bring it to.
All that said, dealerships can pull up if your car software was ever upgraded to 18 speaker at the factory if it's on the build sheet. It seems odd that this could happen at the factory, but if there are no signs of speakers ever being installed and then removed and the software isn't set up for 18 speaker---I'm not sure they could possibly argue that you didn't get something you paid for. I don't know your situation but if you bought it off a dealer lot, it's possible that the dealer removed the speakers and put them in one of the other cars in which case if you have signs of speakers being installed and uninstalled they can claim that you removed them and sold them and want more etc... Could get tricky.

Sounds like the answer I got at my wedding when I asked my father in law if my new bride came with a warranty. He then explained the tail light warranty to me. The warranty was only good as long as he could see my tail lights!

I am in contact with SRT customer assistance and waiting for their response. The person I talked to had never heard of the "48 hour rule". I bought the Viper off the lot with 7 miles (3 we me test driving). The audio system did not work when I went to pick it up. They took it in the back and "fixed the amp". There is no evidence of the extra speakers being installed ever. I know because the rear hatch leaked onto the carpet and we pulled it up to see that we needed to replace the "cardboard" piece underneath as well. The car is still under 3 year "full warranty" until June of this year. The only thing on the build sheet is:
RAAC All Radio Equipped Vehicles RCAP Harman Kardon High Performance Audio RE8P HD Radio
It does not specifically say 18 speakers however the RCAP is the 18 speaker upgrade. I will check on the software upgrade but that will take the support of the dealership...
Maybe they will as I have told them this issue has nothing to do with them really with SRT. However they should have checked the build against actually accepted vehicle to notice that it did not have the upgrade.

Tell the DM that he has 48 hours to agree to fix it :)
Didn't this same thing happen to someone else who posted here? So familiar, or am I having a stroke?!
Pretty similar but different, same, same ... but different. (Lil movie humor)

That was me. Just an FYI, not only did FCA start ignoring me after they told me they were going to fix it, they are ignoring Andy on the request too.
I think they are waiting to see if I lawyer up or not.
Also, another FYI, in digging through this, original owner or not, the Monroney Sticker is the bible as long as you are in the warranty period. It's no different than the power train warranty going to the next owner as long as you are within the original period.

I was wondering if it's still in warranty. I think it is because its due for an R28 recall, but the engine was replaced before that.
hmmmm

Wow, sorry to hear it. It's amazing stuff like this happens, and a shame they're not all over it.

Any chance they were removed?

Nothing has been removed from the vehicle unless the dealership did it during a maintenance stop. It would be cool if anybody can produce a diagram of the 18/19 speaker locations inside the Viper. I cannot find one anywhere showing all speakers in the same diagram. I now have the GM of the store and the Service Mgr trying to see if the speakers might be there but not turned on in some fashion.

I'd ask for the rule in writing and signed, then send it to a higher power.

There may be some truth to this.
Remember when you said they took the car "in the back" to fix some amplifier issue? My money is on whomever performed this "service" didn't put the correct jumper in for the full audio (or the like).

there should be speakers in the door near the handle and 4 subs behind the driver and passenger for the 18 speaker kit.
as slowhatch says - the firmware might not be enabled. it is a software switch that has to be turned on.
