View Full Version : The Freakin Panic Alarm

Does anyone know if there is a way of disabling the stupid freakin' panic alarm. I'll be working on the car with the key in my pocket and the stupid panic alarm goes off. The button must get pressed in my pocket. Happens on all my cars including my Grand Cherokee and Vipers. Scares the crap out of me. I would love to disable the thing. This has got to be the stupidest feature ever. Does anyone ever use the damn thing for its intended purpose? Can't imagine why, pack a firearm instead.
And you can't say it helps you find your car in a parking lot, who forgets where they park their Viper? Besides you need to be close to the car for it to work. Aggghhhh, I hate that thing!!!!

I hear ya, same with me. On both my Viper and my Ram. They are stupid, and have been on every key fob of every vehicle I've ever owned for years. Perhaps once they had a purpose, but no more. But I don't think they can be disarmed.

I think it might have been useful back when it was introduced to help draw attention to a "panic" situation. Now most of the time I mutter "idiot" for someone setting it off and ignore it and move along.

The only thing I can think of is opening up the fob and disabling the button. The button is far too easy to press, it happens quite often when the key is in my pocket.

I would suspect that it is as simple as putting a piece of tape between the conductive underside of the button, and the circuit traces it is pressed against.

Its a warning George.....to change your underwear out after it goes off. I still need to get over to see the new baby. Between corporate and individual taxes (done), final stages of selling my wireless communications business (in progress), launching a new US Engineering Solutions Operation (in progress) and timing for giving notice (in progress), I haven't even opened the garage door to the third car garage this year. Lost 25 lbs since my daughter was born 7 months ago due to stress/illness? One day life should normalize. Until then, will just live through your eyes George. Can't wait to see the new car.

George, it sounds like ColoViper might come over to your house while you are working on your car and just hold your fob so the panic button does not go off, hehe.
Seriously, have not heard of anyway to get it off, but AZTVR may have a thought???

Having Rick hold the key fob ain't a bad idea. If that doesn't work AZTVR's suggestion may be worth a shot.

I just pulled my key apart. There's no obvious way to do this, but I'll admit, I didn't look at it for long. The circuit board is fused to the key fob shell, though I'm sure it could be removed with a little persuasion.

To deactivate
Push the alarm button and allow it to sound for 4 honks, then push button again to stop
Do this 4 times and do not allow more than 5 seconds between each sequence
After the last one, press it one more time and let it honk 10 times, then push to stop
That's it
Try it again and you will find the alarm to be disabled

I think this is a prank to make us look like idiots...
I used the link below and disabled the button. Took 10 minutes. Hardest part is finding an o-ring or other piece that is the correct diameter and height.

After 26 horn honks I may not be able to hear if it is still working or not. Oh my.

Does that disable the whole alarm system or just the panic alarm? If the later, it would be awesome.

Just makes it harder to push the panic button. Functionality of the alarm is unchanged.

Either remove the switch completely, or what I would do is maybe take some sandpaper and lower the plastic on the switch just so you have to press it hard for the switch to fully engage. I took some pics of my same key but never had that issue.

Awesome CommandoMatt, while George is distracted with that whole sequence, I can hold one of his other GEN V key fobs in my pocket. Ha! Ha!

That surprised me. I wasn't expecting to see actual switches on the circuit board. The idea of putting a small rubber O-ring or something on the switch for the button to push against instead of pushing the white plastic sounds like a good idea.

Bingo! No permanent modifications necessary and can be reversed in 30 seconds.

This is worth a try for sure.

If you're working on the car, put the key away somewhere safe, not your pocket??
I had a 930 slant nose P car, it had an aftermarket alarm with a 'pain' inducer, didn't pay much attention to whatever it was.
I'm 6'4" and while lying upside down under the dash working on a gauge in the garage I set the alarm off by the fob in my pocket. I was stuck in there just trying to survive, I thought I was going to die. Since then, I've never put a fob in my pocket while working on the car, I always put a fob on the windshield/wiper. I still have Nam quality flashbacks and believe I had 4 heart attacks before I could get that pain inducing alarm shut off. But, the o ring looks like a smart alternative.

Sorry guys....couldn't resist.
Doing what I suggested will just make a whole lot of noise...that's all
