Yes, but Obama did a dirty trick and pulled forward the 2017 rule making revisit soon after Trump won the election. Trying to make sure the rules through 2025 would be set in stone. It will take some serious undoing to reverse. The auto industry was completely taken aback by the acceleration and elimination of a true comment period that is required by law. Bet you don't read that in the unbiased press.

At the very least there should be some leniency with the recent allegations against FCA supposedly cheating on emissions standards. Also, making Volkswagen destroy all those cars and pay billions in fines seemed excessive too. Hopefully we can strike a better balance going forward with the effects of reducing emissions and increasing fuel economy and the adverse impact on the economy.

All for cleaner air but this CAFE mpg thing is BS. Hell a 1989 Mustang LX with the 5.0 and the highway gears got 27 mpg back in the day. Hell the cars now struggle to get what a Ford Escort use to get.

Now if they were serious, they would put better cats on all cars with more rare earth substraight, etc. so a new cat would cost $2,000 each. That is the real way to clean it up. The BS tests they cone up with for the mpg test are BS anyway. NOBODY can get the mpg they have in their tests. They do not apply to the real world. If they cared about the air quality, then focus on the air quality, not the mpg.

Just my opinion but maybe Trump and crew will make them all (including the CAFE and EPA) meet to real world, not the fantasy world those regs have been living in and moving towards.

Safety adds weight, cats and increased emissions requirements add weight. If they could build a 1600lb car with no safety equipment it would eaily get in the high 60-70 range.

Hmm yes and no. They are pushing for higher MPG to produce more efficient engines. Less fuel burned = less emissions = better air quality. Then from here as you say they could clean up the produced emissions further with better cats, EGR, etc.

There is such a thing as unbiased press?!?!?!?! I never woulda guessed....
If they're so worried about emmisions, how bout they go plant a tree for every car they make that doesn't achieve 25MPG average :smilielol:

Our cars could get 1mpg and mathematically it wouldn't even touch their mpg averages because we are so low volume.

I think it's funny that diesels in the name of being cleaner get worse MPG so now more fuel needs burned. It's a head scratcher to me, but...

Oh I am right with you buddy on this one!

"Lets put a DPF system on so that it catches all the soot and then every 1000miles we'll waste more fuel by putting a fuel injector on it and turning the DPF into a 2000*F+ oven and blow it all out the tail pipe, this should be way better for emissions and the environment!!!"

HAHA so true!!! Or how bout those silly DEF/Urea systems??? And then those stupid systems freeze up cuz they aren't designed to operate in the cold temps that we get up here in Canada. Now you're getting a tow truck. Burning more fuel. Again. Like I said, just plant a tree and call it good.
Besides, if I was really really worried about the environment and emmisions, I wouldn't be driving a Viper....with no cats... ;)

Wow.... This is the first I read of this and that's just plain sad... The writer could have not said it better than the part about giving the cars to people to replace there old vehicles that are far worse polluters. My words don't do it justice;)

Here is more fun to add to this.

Greedy TDI owners were STRIPPING their cars prior to taking them into the dealership for their buyback. Trying to squeeze VW for every penny...

We should all just start worshipping our all knowing diety, Elon Musk. He shall show us the way. Plus I think it's a federal law now to say you don't want a tesla. So be careful.
