View Full Version : Tail of the Dragon Number 12 Bucket List Registration Is OPEN

Joel
01-19-2017, 11:13 AM
Save these dates – June 1-4 2017 - because registration for Tail of the Dragon Number 12 is now open. Once again it will be a VOA Bucket List event hosted by the Alabama/Tennessee and Carolinas Viper Clubs. Plan to have a great time on the best roads east of the Mississippi at what has been the largest Viper gathering in the South. This year's event registration includes Friday dinner at the Park Vista hotel. Also included in the registration “Goody Bag” is a special Tail of the Dragon event t-shirt, a commemorative coin, trolley tokens for a ride to dinner on Friday, and a video of the parade through Gatlinburg (one per registered car) Saturday night. Last Bucket List we had over 150 Vipers thundering through town. To say it shook the earth is an understatement. Plus, we'll have cruises throughout the area including the traditional Friday Taming of the Dragon and a Saturday drive to Fontana. You don't want to miss this event so register today.

The Greystone Lodge is saving rooms at special rates for the event. Rates Sunday through Thursday start at $97 and weekend rates begin at $113 (all rates before tax). There are other rates for enhanced rooms and suites. Reserve early to get your spot. They have agreed to honor these rates all week if you want to come early or stay later. Phone for Greystone is (800) 451-9202

Registration is $85 for VOA members and $105 for non-members. Late fees can be avoided by registering early and there will be a cancellation policy in effect. The registration site is http://carolinasvoa.com/tod_registration.htm

If you have questions please feel free to contact me. Thanks! Agenda and more information to follow.

Joel, it is with great regret that I will not be able to attend the best event of the year. The memories that Lisa and I have from Gatlinburg and the Dragon are the greatest and we will be back for 2018.

From 2 years ago...

Up early, couldn't sleep.
Counting curves, instead of sheep.
Three hundred eighteen, to be exact.
We're ready to go, we're already packed!
The Tail of the Dragon, a VOA Bucket List,
We must be getting close, our Viper is starting to HISS!
Owners are coming, from near and from far,
To be together, because of a car!
This year marks an Anniversary,
With so many Vipers, more than the eye can see.
So, if you are prepared, for a drive not to be missed.
You must have checked off
"ToDo" on your Bucket List

DRIVE ON

A rambling racing man i know, took to the track to have a go
Found mirror image not his thing, as he sped around that ring.
One day discovered road folklore, 'tis said The Dragon offers more',
Now one his heart and mind shall be, as he chases curves for free.

Drive on, my Dragon friends Drive on, I pray your destiny is not to spin
Drive on, my Dragon friends Drive on, against the curvy roads you now call kin.

Some ascend to meet the day, others spend their nights in play
I can't speak to which is best, all i see is asphalt quest.
There has rarely been a time, when my tires have not kept line.
So i searched until i found, the challenge that great racers sound

Drive on, my Dragon friends Drive on, i pray your destiny is not to spin
Drive on, my Dragon friends Drive on, against the curvy roads you now call kin.

600 horses in my steed, pins me to my seat, yet freed
to tame the apportioned narrow lane, and yes this may sound somewhat vain
But joy is all i wish to find, and this road to my heart is kind,
I think that many others see, The Dragon speaks this mystery.

Drive on, my Dragon friends Drive on, I pray your destiny is not to spin
Drive on, my Dragon friends Drive on, against the curvy roads you now call kin.
Drive on, my Dragon friends Drive on, I sense your destiny is not to spin
Drive on, my Dragon friends Drive on, against the curvy roads you now call kin.

Typically,

Sun:....

REGARDING ITINERARY:
Maybe we'll just issue (potential) route maps with approx times to traverse, and times/places to eat, and let everyone take their own roads to wherever, whenever, however. Just like in life -> on your own, or with friends of your choosing. Would that be interesting or what??

I like the idea of Friday being a formal, planned route and run. I liked it a couple years ago when we has several options on Saturday with the stipulation of being back in time for the parade. My suggestion would be to have it a little more announced or distinct about which group is pulling out at what times. It got very confusing trying to figure out which group was leaving. I wanted to go to Clingmans Dome (I second the idea of that being another run) but almost left with the group headed to the Dragon again. Depending on distance and run times, maybe 1 group an hour could leave starting at 7AM with a flyer handed out in the welcome packets stating which group leaved the parking lot at which times and their destination.

Count me in for any group runs... Clingmans Dome, Fontana Dam, Road to Nowhere.

We are working on a group cruise for Saturday. Kudos to Thomas for his work on planning the cruise. We will try to figure out who wants to go on Saturday so we can plan a lunch stop somewhere near Robbinsville or Fontana. Depending on the route, we will leave the hotel around 8:30 or 9:00 am and be back well before the parade line up. Right now we will probably line up for the parade around 4:30 pm to drive to the Cherokee Grille. We will have an itinerary once early registration closes (April 15) so we have an idea of how many are coming. Stay tuned!

Ok, it is getting close to time - am planning routes and groups now...i need some volunteers.

I would like to have a minimum of two groups - need leaders (point man) and followers (cat herders) for rear guard for each.

We will have a 'fast' group that pulls out for G'Burg pretty early (7:45ish? timeframe) on both Friday and Saturday mornings.

Then a second 'cruise' group (in the 8:30ish timeframe). The second group will meet up with me in Townsend, as we'll go the foothills parkway on to our destinations...

If you drive like MattC or DaveI then you'll probably want to go with the early group. I'm hoping for some quick feedback and commitment for these 'positions'.

Let me know your thoughts.

I have gotten my first cat, er...'snake herder' volunteer: Joel Hausler will be bringing up the rear of the 'cruise snake' group for the T.O.D. run on Friday - we'll see if he can stand it (considering all the stragglers and wrong turners of past years) for Saturday if needed.

NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS - Josh Josrocket is considering the 'slithering lead' for the (um, uh, ahem) 'striking snake' early group. If you can keep up with him, then all the HP to ya.

I am getting conflicting information from past participants as to the desired routes, where to meet up, when/where to eat Friday and Saturday lunch, etc.

It is time for you to post your thoughts - what do YOU want to do as a Tail Of The Dragon Attendee this year? We will base our plans on your feedback. Need to submit your ideas soon!

(NOTE: as this is the Tail Of The Dragon event, we need to focus on the nice roads in the proximity of the Dragon - we won't consider radically distant cruises, et.al.)

Here is a general area map that we will stay within:

We have booked our room! Several of us are going to be traveling to Gatlinburg early. We will be leaving Greensboro Tuesday morning to spend a couple extra days there. I will put out details as it gets closer if anyone wants to leave from Greensboro Tuesday morning with us. So far there's 3 Vipers in our group.

No worries. 830am is departure from the Greystone Lodge to the Tellico Plains Exxon, which is the starting point for TotD runs and rally point for those not coming from Gaitlinburg. The two start times are to space the cars out a bit to prevent "clogging" on the drive, both are the same route. Its a very full day! Thanks, Alan

Well, those that come from other areas that meet up at the Cracker Barrel (Campbell Station Rd, Farragut, TN - an older tradition) will eat (approx 8:30am), and then leave out from there in time to be at the Exxon in Tellico Plains by the appointed time. It is less than an hour and a half drive to the Exxon, from that location.

Its a public road so I don't see why not. Two years ago 2 Hellcats and a Corvette were with us. I think the Corvette couple had an issue with their Viper days prior. Just a bit of a buzzkill wanting to see Vipers and there's an odd car in front or behind taking away from the experience. And I'm talking about the random blue mustang that jumped in front of me for about 5 miles going 20 mph the whole time.

Yes to your question, No problem at all. The only thing we worry about is having all Vipers in the Parade...all others should be at the tail end of the Vipers if they want to participate.

I have determined to drive the speed limit - everyone will have a map - I suppose that they will be free to pass me after we leave the Gatlinburg escort on Saturday headed to the Valley. Friday? Same deal from the Exxon. All 'official' drives will strictly obey all speed and safety laws. Again, safe, legal, intelligently calculated passing is encourag...er...allowed. OK, DECISION TIME. We have - of course at nearly the last minute for route planning - decided to appease everyone and do two different routes on Saturday June 3. I am sending out emails to all the participants (those that are signed up for the event officially). We are going to do both the Maggie Valley Cruise as originally planned, we are adding another more dedicated Tail Of the Dragon run - multiple times - with a lunch stop at Fontana Village - for those that want to maximize their Dragon time. FOR THOSE THAT ARE REGISTERED, please check your emails as there are links included, both for the planned route, and also for the voting process to CHOOSE which drive you are going on (PLEASE VOTE/Choose!). FOR THOSE THAT HAVE NOT YET REGISTERED - please do so. Time is short.

Also included is a vote/choice about the Friday event - and your route plans...

See you soon!

No doubt the organizers will be keeping track of us too. :D

I'd HIGHLY recommend doing Friday with the "Quick Group"...just to get you up to speed (pun fully intended).
This is not a track; there's no safety gear or flag stations or anything like that. The other downside is that there's on-coming traffic. A lot of it. And a bucket load of cops (local, state, and park service) just waiting to pick people off. They have really good hideouts too; just ask Stretch & Ronnie. :-D

It's certainly not a race. There are no trophies at the end of the day. This is simply "spirited" driving with good friends.

It's very relative too: most of the actual TOTD is only 35 mph. The Quick group *might* touch 45 mph, if it's nice weather and totally clear of traffic.

Besides- Matt C. and "the King" swap holding the record through there. I don't think anyone in the BatSh!t Crazy group is trying to go sub-10 minutes through the Dragon. We're just having (controlled) fun at a slightly higher pace than the Quick group.

If you have any questions or concerns, please talk to the organizers. They're all really great people and won't BS you or sugar-coat anything.
Also, talk with some of the other TOTD veterans at the hotel/dinner/bar. I'm sure Stretch will make me tell my rookie story of this event about 6-8 times over the weekend. LOL

For the first time, I recommend running with the regular group Friday, If you feel the need for speed, join the Dragon group on Saturday. The road needs to be respected or it will bite, giving you a second chance only if you're lucky. There are hundreds of videos and photos on line of accidents and fatalities on the Dragon. I work with a member of the Saturn Sky Club who had one of their cars go over the edge and killed the girl in the passenger seat when her door impacted a tree. With that being said, if you know your car, know your limits, know the cars limits and learn the road, you can go pretty quick.

Great input by others. It's a spirited drive on a great road...you will have fun regardless. No real upside to over push...the hero times mentioned are done on off days, off times, and off season even by folks who know the road very well.

Also when running the skyway you can carry more speed, so don't forget each road can have its ways to sneak up on you. A couple years ago, 2 cars back from me in a faster group, a GTS locked up the brakes coming into a tight left hand turn and went into the ditch (thankfully very minor damage), but It can happen quick.

Thank you all for your input. I completely agree that a public road is not a race track. I definitely want to make one or to reconnaissance passes before I make a more aggressive pass. I am not looking to set any records, but I would like to try and make a more spirited pass then simply a cruise on a cool road.

Empty road is all I need to have some fun and that doesn't happen much anymore at the dragon. The real Dragon died 15-20 years ago!

It is apparent that we need to schedule a track day (or three!) at AMP (being more Dragon -like), or Road Atlanta for the next T.O.D. event. The actual U.S.129 as many have stated is not a track. It's an over-crowded two-lane/two-way traffic road with plenty of crazy drivers out to drive hard. That being said, if you go easy and just enjoy the rhythm of the curves - AND STAY IN YOUR LANE - uh...DEEP in your lane - you'll probably be fine (there is always risk) and have a great event. Please be aware of all that has been said by the conservatives amongst us. I recall driving with Matt late last year in an evening with no traffic up, and we encountered a semi truck coming down - they are strictly NOT allowed on that road now (nor were they at that time). I'm telling you, with no lane left, that experience is much too exciting for anyone. Be prepared, and drive safely and respect the limits, and watch for idiots, and going into curves stay as far into your lane as you can without being 'in the marbles ', and you'll enjoy your time on the Dragon.

For all you folks who think you are "go fasters" take a look at this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rGbln3J4Sg We do not condone nor advise anyone to exceed the speed limit on the Dragon. There is nothing to see and plenty to tear up if you drive over your head. No matter how fast you think you can go, we are there to have fun. For an idea of how the Dragon will look, check out this video of a guy who thinks he is going pretty fast. He is in a Corvette and he makes some pretty dumb comments but his time from Deal's Gap to the top is over 20 minutes and he was exceeding the speed limit but having fun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5enx2p0SEUo Just sayin'! Take your time and enjoy! Look forward to seeing all of you in a few weeks.

And if you don't think the Dragon will bite you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K16YnmJN0fc A bit dramatic but worth a view. We won't see trucks now but in the past I've had several close calls.

Yup, and then there is the fact that ALL OF US represent the Viper community to the world, at the Dragon (yes the world, because someone will video your shenanigans and then all the world WILL know), so we should man up (and/or woman up!) and drive right. What a better way to impress the community, those who enforce the law and everyone that only wishes they had a car as cool as what we drive. I guess i am preaching, but it's a good sermon for those with ears to hear...

Thank You!
Current Talley (cars, not headcount, you can figure it out :-)) :
25 cars - Maggie Valley.
16 cars - Tail Of The Dragon.

Has the Maggie Valley group considered running the Ratter since they will be right there at it Saturday?? A few of us run it last year and was back in plenty of time with lunch and all for the parade. Not trying to change anyone's plan's,just wondered if anyone thought of it.I respect everyone's hard work on the planning and think that the plans in place are great.

We did! right now were trying to focus on two runs that are crowd pleasers and good solid directions. The Rattler is a top fav, but has had some road condition issues recently. There are still about 60% of the Vipers out there that are uncommitted and will probably hit other roads. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Great planning and t-shirt design! Thanks to everyone involved and thanks for all the updates and information!

I'm still recovering from surgery and haven't touched ole blue since our mountain drive the day before going under the knife. I finally got my drain tube removed yesterday and starting to feel human again. Not sure I'll be up to all the festivities but I might try and join in on a ride or at least see some of you in Gatlinburg. I should know more next week or maybe I'll try and take her out this weekend.

Anyway, hope to meet some of you and thanks again for all the work that has gone into the event!

BAM! I'm sure there will be another 20+/- that just show up for the day or two and leave.
Well done guys! The agenda lay-out looks amazing.
But I'll still get lost, even after 12 yrs....:lol2:

If you want to break off and run the Rattler, more power to you. It gets to be a long run with no bathrooms in sight for the first part of the Rattler. I think part has been repaved but last time I was there on my motorcycle it was rough on the first 3rd. That's been a few years. The trip we have planned is 3 hours plus lunch and visits to sites like Wheels Through Time or other spots. We want to get back in time for folks to get ready for the parade and the Rattler would add almost another 3 hours. It takes a long time to line up 100+ cars.
