is there anything that proves that the motor in a gen 2 is the actual original motor that it came with from the factory? just like in the classic cars where the engine block numbers and VIN's were matched eg.( last 3 numbers from block matches the last 3 numbers of the VIN#) etc.

Yes, it's located on the rear of the cylinder block just below the right cylinder head. Engine S/N is located on the right front near the oil filter.

Maurice's book, the Viper Buyer's Guide, explains the engine numbering and where to look.

The vin is just pin stamped on the block

So in a nutshell, if you change the motor in a Gen 2 with another gen 2 say a 97 GTS with a 99 GTS motor, can you tell ? Is there of knowing it does not belong to that car?

Only if they check the VIN on the window to the one on the block. Unlikely, but if you want to be honest to the buyer, just tell them.

Not me I'm talking about...lol....just curious as it has set my mind once in a while when looking at certain cars for sale. Blown motors, factory replacements, etc could have been the situation for some.

Have any of us ever looked when purchasing? I'll bet you very little to none have.

Obviously, if you throw in an engine from another Viper you can tell by comparing the VIN stamped in. But what, if you get a new replacement engine (e.g. under warranty)? Is this one VIN free and can/will they stamp in the VIN of the receiving car or do those engines come already with a special VIN stamped in? Just asking out of sheer curiosity...

..speaking out of history for the older cars .....

...the pad where the VIN would be engraved is blank on a replacement engine. I'd expected the same for our cars.

If its done they way it was years ago, the engines are stamped to match the car they are going into just before installation. Prior to that, they are a rack of engines with no VIN. I seem to remember this coming up during our plant tour in late 1999 or early 2000. (they were building 2000s) If memory serves, the engines weren't stamped at the engine assembly plant..
