View Full Version : WANTED 96 or 97 B W GTS

Looking for a clean, no stories, no accident, 100% original paint 96 or 97 B/W GTS. Must have less than 10K miles and come with documentation. Window Sticker a must. Prefer stock, but open to a car with some light mods if stock parts are available to return to stock. I had a 97 and sold it a few years back. Should have kept it as I am now in the market for the same exact car I sold. Go figure.
If you have anything or know of someone selling, please shoot me a PM. I am also very familiar with these cars and know what the current market is, so please don't PM me with cars that have crazy prices attached to them or Sellers that are dreaming. I will pay current market value, not what the car cost new, used to be worth, or will "likely" be worth in the future.
Thanks in advance for any and all leads.

I'm interested to know your values on these cars as well. I just bought one exactly as you're describing. Shopped around for a long time and know what I paid, as well as what cars were listed for what, note there were only a handful publicly listed.
Want to hear what you assess the market value at for that car.

Also curious as I just finished my shopping. Asking prices are all over and I stuck to my opinion of market value and ended up landing a better car for my original budget.

I will consider anything as stated in my original post. Real world pricing for what I am looking for is mid to upper $40's depending on the particular car and miles. There are at least 2 out there that are being offered at low $40's, but have no documentation and that is a must for me.

So I'm not 100% sure of what they are worth either but I think you're definitely low on the price. I was/am looking for the same type of 96 viper with less than 10k miles, proper documentation, un-modded and no history and was willing to pay 50k for it, but I found no one willing to sell such a car. I know they exists I just don't think anyone who has that kind of car is willing to sell. I moved on an bought a Gen 5 ACR-E, but that doesn't mean if I happen to find one I wouldn't entertain the idea of owning yet another viper.

There is a 12k mile yellow ACR at Viper Exchange for 50k with window sticker and documentation that has been for sale for a bit - does yellow hurt values that much?

They're just not the same. Not the same kind of person/collector want that 12k ACR as the person that wants the original Blue/white GTS viper from '96/'97

Did you check out the one at Viper Exchange with 900 miles? That car is certainly worth something in the $50's. The car I am looking for is not a $50K car. I have an 02 ACR & a 92 RT/10. I am looking for a B/W and a couple other Vipers to add to the stable. Don't want a sub 1000 mile car as I plan on driving it.

Yeah, it's been listed there for awhile but it's actually 60k. Just didn't want to pay that much for a car I wouldn't really drive. Some might say 50k, 60k, what's the difference? I don't know I guess I had a hard enough time willing to pay 50k that 60k was out of the question. I'm not really a collector, I just like vipers---even that isn't 100% true because I thought Vipers had gone south when they came out with Gen3/4's so I stuck with my Gen2. I didn't get back on board with their car until the Gen5 came out and it was just too expensive in 2013 for the GTS I felt so I passed until the ACR came out and couldn't be more happy. Same price if not cheaper than the GTS in 2013 and so much more car.

Below is a link to one that was listed for 53k and sold awhile back before viper gen2 prices started increasing slightly. Also a great car with low miles. But again you can see the sold amount was more than 50k even at a time when prices for vipers were weaker comparatively.

Where do you see the "sold" amount? Listing and Selling prices are often very different. A lot of the 96/97 B/W cars that have run through recent auctions have mostly been well below $50K. Check the Mecum web site for results. There are multiple. In fact, if you look at one example, a 3K miles 97 B/W that sold for $48K, that seller would have been much better off selling the car on his own. By the time you deduct the commission and the cost of getting the car to auction, he was lucky if he walked away with $42K.
I'm certain I'll find what I am looking for. I always do :).

I don't see the sold price, I apologize. I just meant that I was watching the car awhile back and it was listed for 53k and sold relatively quickly so I'm sure it sold right around what they were asking for it. I only know it sold quickly because I was still dragging my feet as to whether to buy it or not so I figured I'd wait and if it didn't sell I might be able to negotiate lower.
I do hope you find what you're looking for. Just giving you my experience looking for the same thing with even a higher price point for a year or more and sort of just gave up when the ACR-Es grabbed my attention more.

I have a 96 B/W with 6,500 miles. Has the original window sticker in a frame and has a viper car cover. Has a new battery and 3M clear cover on the front bumper. Front bumper has no scratches. Car has no dings or dents or rock chips. It is completely stock. Bought it 2 years ago with 5,000 miles and has zero problems. Has been serviced by voa member and has been seen in person by multiple St Louis Viper members. I paid 53 for it and would only sell for around that price. Email me if you want any further info. Selling a 96 B/W for anything under 50K with under 10K miles and with all the documentation is giving it away. 2017 is the last year of the Viper. Once that catches on to some that don't know the news, it will most definitely start to climb well above where it is now. If I were to sell a 96 B/W now, i would be asking a premium. You will all regret selling them for under that. I would say the dealers are dead on what they should be worth now. Legendary Automobiles sold a couple a few years back when there was no news of 2017 and they sold for high 60's CND. Add two years and the Vipers extinction in 2017 and you get the picture.
I wonder what they OP sold their car for a few years ago and the condition and documentation involved. Missing ust the original window sticker can mean thousands for a collector. Missing anything since factory can mean thousands.

Sold my '96 w/4000 miles. Consigned it as did not want the hassle. They sold it quickly for $52K and netted me $49K. That was good enough for me as only sold because I purchased another '96 with 1200 miles.

Thanks for the feedback. Like I said mid to high $40's is where the market is now. Funny thing aside from what others on this thread have said is that I have already received multiple messages on my quest despite what some on here apparently think is unreasonable and I just posted this! think I might even find something before years end. One of these days I might sell my '97 B&W GTS, but it's only got 7775 miles on it, all stock (except for the cat-back - but I have all the original factory parts down to the original factory oil filter that I removed at 5 miles), all documentation along with my window sticker, never did the frame recalls (wanted to keep it factory stock and no mistakes) and it's perfect in every way that I can think of. I don't think I'd let it go for anywhere in the 40's though - if you can find a perfect one in that price range, grab it while you can. One of these days I'll let it go, but for now, that's the car that started it all for me and has too much sentimental value.

Martin, just like you, I've never done frame recall. Too many botched and not necessary for normal use.

Then why not grab one of those cars from those multiple messages you received?
As per your quote in your OP" Should have kept it as I am now in the market for the same exact car I sold. Go figure"......whomever sells you one for under 50 will regret it as you have when you sold your 97 and your back looking for another and so will they for well over what they sell it to you for.

I have bought and sold the same car multiple times. Did it with my Cobra R, did it with Vettes, did it with Various Mustangs and did it with Vipers. I'm just like that. I have something, I get bored, I sell it and then I repeat. Gives me something to do. Trust me when I tell you I'm not doing it to turn a profit on the car and I'm not a flipper or a dealer. I buy them to enjoy them. I just like clean cars and I know what I want to pay for what I want. I am talking to a couple people right now and I don't think we are too far apart on one of them. We'll see what happens. When I say "I should have kept the one I had" it's kind of an inside joke for people that know me as I have been known to buy the same exact car multiple times. Have even bought cars that I sold back.

I believe my pricing is spot on. Might not be what you would want for your car, but there are plenty in my range. Just look st the auctions that have completed recently. VE has one right now with less than 1000 miles for $59K, but that's not what I am looking for as I already stated before. While this is a nice car, it's not exactly a rare car. Now a 93 Cobra R with only 107 units produced....that's a rare car and I would pay a lot more for one of those than I would for a 96 or 97 Viper. Yup...I am looking for one of those as well.

Again, good luck. Everyone wants a good deal when buying and no one wants to get ripped off when selling. Generally those selling think it's worth more than it is and those buying want to get it as cheap as they can regardless of what it's actually worth. I would be interested if you find what you're looking for because as someone who is willing to pay more for the exact same car right now---no one has contacted me and I can't find anything for sale like that for under 50k. I probably wasn't as active as you are being about finding one, but as viper prices started going up slightly in the last 6 months I just assume that the car is not going to sell for what I am willing to pay. If you find one like you're looking for at your price point, you got a steal of a deal no question about it. Won't say it won't happen, but the guy selling you that car could have easily got more just listing the car on a viper forum or Ebay so either they love you or they are lazy.

I disagree...just look at the auction results. I find there are those that can and those that say "I was just about ready to pull the trigger on that car", or "I would have bought the car at that price", yet they never pony up the dough to buy it. I am an actual buyer and I buy what I like and I pay a fair price for what I want. I have also been on the sell side plenty of times and sold for far less than what I paid and also bought back what I previously sold and paid far more than what I received when I sold. If $59K is such a screaming bargain for a 96 GTS with under 1,000 miles, you should just go to VE right now and write them a check. The car is waiting for you and has been for some time now. Just remember to wipe the dust off of it when you get there.

You also disagreed 2 months ago on a different thread when you said that you can find ACRE vipers below MSRP from dealerships and I didn't call you out on that and that is complete bunk as well. Let me also state that I also don't find 59k to be a screaming bargain which is why I also never purchased that car and why it's still on the market. But if I find someone willing to sell at what you're asking for I'd buy instantly right here right now.

Actually no...you didn't call me out on anything. All I said is that there are deals below MSRP on Viper ACRE's and all you had to do is look. That was / is true. I know plenty of people that bought ACRE's well below MSRP from local dealers close to me. Palmer Dodge was also giving huge discounts before production ended. Not sure why you are being so defensive. This is common knowledge. Don't worry, with 1166 B/W cars for 96 and another 965 for 97, there are plenty to go around. We can both buy one :)

really? In the last couple months? I just find it hard to believe. I spoke with them as well and they wouldn't give a break on MSRP at all. I'm not saying that before September they weren't giving deals, but when orders stopped, no one was willing to give a discount. Not $1 and I talked to every dealer I knew.

Just because you didn't get a deal, doesn't mean that everyone else didn't get a deal. Did you walk into 30 dealerships, or just call them? Most won't take you seriously if you just call. Sorry you didn't get a deal bud. I know plenty that have and will continue to do so if the order banks in fact open again.

Walked into at least half a dozen of them, and trust me last March they were willing to give deals. I just wasn't ready to pull the trigger. Oh well, I love the viper I got I just find it hard to believe that any dealer is giving a discount on new ACREs based on my personal experience and my friend who is looking for one.

Not to turn this thread into something it shouldn't be but you are completely wrong implying that ACRE's can't be bought for under MSRP. I know someone personally that locked one up a couple months ago for well under MSRP!!!! Intended for OneofOne....
Again, that was a couple months ago. Not what I'm talking about. Either way, yes let's please drop this as it's off topic.

Martin, just like you, I've never done frame recall. Too many botched and not necessary for normal use.
My feeling on it is that the recall can be done anytime, and like you, I've seen so many botched ones (or ones that are going to crap ten years later due to corrosion, etc.) that I chose to not do it. I'd wager that the unmolested cars end up going for a premium eventually. If they're not track cars, no real need to do the recall - and despite what people say, those particular recalls are not "must do" items in my opinion. I did almost "do the recall" before the bankruptcy by just getting the entire parts kit for each and just having the dealer mark it as "done". I figured that the parts might eventually disappear, so I wanted them to follow the car if I ever wanted to sell it - but I figured I'd let the new owner decide whether to have them done or not.

Smart move as there were plenty of cars that had the recall botched and hacked to the point where they had to get it redone by someone that knew what they were doing. Surprised they released the parts to you without actually doing the repair.

I never did go through with it - once I realized that Chrysler wasn't really going to vaporize, I put the whole thing on the back burner. There are plenty of parts kits out there waiting to be used (I think they had to generate more kits than they needed due to the "oops, we screwed up" factor) and I figure the recall can be done any time in the next 20 years as long as there is one tech who still knows how to do it... Those recalls were a mess. I remember people running down to their dealers to get them done right when the recall came out, and at least half of them were completely botched from the start. Then, a few dealers had reputations for doing them perfectly (Mark at Woodhouse for one), and people were shipping their cars to him to make sure it was done right.
Then, a few years later, people were advertising their cars as "no 998 recall done" and those cars were selling for a little more and a little faster than the ones that were advertised as "998 recall done perfectly" (with tons of pictures to prove it). Then there were the cars that got botched, and nobody would touch them with a ten foot pole. When I saw that, I figured I'd just not do the recall and leave some possible future owner to make the decision on whether to do it or not.
Personally, even the well done recalls almost always look like crap in my opinion. I like to see a car just like it came out of CAAP.

Don't worry, with 1166 B/W cars for 96 and another 965 for 97, there are plenty to go around. We can both buy one :)
There are far less than those numbers available today.. Subtract no history, Completely stock and subtract more for under 10K miles and you don't have allot left.
I for one wouldn't sell my 96 B/W for what your looking for and it falls into the completely stock no history category (also has very low VIN and original tires)..
However..... If you wait long enough and the person doesn't completely realize what he has or has to get rid of it quick, you may stumble upon one....
Would have to pull the trigger fast as others will scoop it up..
Good luck with your quest..

^^^This. The half-life of those cars was really short - I remember that during the first three years I owned mine, I was constantly seeing totals at the dealership - or ones that should have been totaled but were getting fixed during the pre-carfax days.
My guess is that half of the Gen II cars got into some kind of serious altercation with an immovable object, and probably three quarters of them have some kind of story. Finding a no-stories, all original car is going to be a challenge - but if you find one, grab it...

You dare come on here and post these outright lies with lists full of more lies and lying about what you paid for your B/W?!!!!! How dare you?!!! Everyone and especially OneofOneViper knows that your information could not possibly be true!...unless the Seller was either lazy or loved you. So which is it?! Was the seller lazy or did they love you?!!! C'mon now...fess up! I for one don't believe a word of what you have posted. I'm sure your numbers are off and there is no way those sellers are giving those B/W's away like that, especially the one with 7423 miles that sold for $45,850!!! Outright lies I tell you!

Out of that entire list, there is 1----*note ONE* exception to the rule for what you and I are looking for. One was sold with 7423 mile for $45,850. We have no idea if it has all the paperwork or the condition of the car or anything like that. Everything else for sale if you're just looking at milage is over 50k if it's under 10k miles. Even the $48,600.00 10128 mile car you have no idea if it has all the proper paperwork and lets face it, again it's slightly over 10k miles and just slightly under 50k price tag. There are no lies here. There is 1 exception to the rule out of 20 cars listed --- and you don't even know if it has proper paperwork or what the condition of the car is so you're assuming a lot based on that one car that happened to sell for the price you're looking.
And again, not that I would ever buy a car by posting on someone else's thread without making sure it was ok with OP first, but not one person has contacted me and anyone who has read this thread clearly knows I am looking for the same thing as you and willing to pay more.

Stop trying to hijack my thread! Start your own "I want to buy a 96 / 97 B/W GTS" thread! LOL!
Actually, this thread has become so polluted that it has turned into a comical read and nothing more. I should have known better than to post something like this one here. In any event, I have a car that I am working on now. Car is not listed for sale anywhere (that I know of) and it is one that I have known about for quite a while. Fits what I am looking for to the tee and some. We'll see what happens. Hoping for the best.
You say that you are willing to pay more than me, but you never said how much more. If I am at high $40's, which could be $49K for the right car and there are plenty out there right now well under $55K, I'm still not sure why you don't have one in your garage yet. A simple search should yield the car you are looking for at the number you are looking pay for it. Good luck to you with your search.

Do you have the original wheels for the car? Id say that would be the only detraction from the value, unless anything else has been modded out. If the rest of the car is stock, id say low-mid 40s wouldn't be unreasonable.

Yeah, maybe in the spring if you want to hold the car until then you can get in the low 40's. In winter with a 30k+ '97 you're probably correct at high 30's to 40. Just a guess of course.
I also agree, that's a low 40's car, not a high 30's car.

History in which way? I have all documentation/invoices of mods/work done to the car including the original "New Vehicle Preparation" sheet when it was originally bought in Nov 1997. Clean CarFax.

I've been looking into switching the seats out but it is around $1,000 for a pair of black well maintained seats. May just negotiate something in with the future buyer.

Taking everything into consideration I think he is very close saying high $30K's. Mileage, interior, wheels, mods.... This car has zero appeal to collectors. To be honest if someone offered $35K I would take it if I was you. I think you would be looking at high $30K's if this car was somewhere around 20-25K miles, as soon as that odometer flips into the 30's it's historically been a milestone for Viper resale, sad but true.

On the gen 2 the power steering pulley and bracket are sub par. Upgrading those parts is highly recommended. Saving the originals doesn't hurt.

Depends on the car and the buyer. As previously noted keeping the original equipment is huge. If it is a bolt-on mod that can easily be swapped back then that's not usually a problem. 96-97 B&W is generally a car that people that are willing to spend the extra money want it to be completely original.
