View Full Version : Wrong hood on my Gen 5 GTS

First, I am a new member from Texas and wanted to preface my first post by saying this is a great site with so much interesting information - I am glad to have finally joined!

My situation is this: I bought a 2014 GTS last year and thought I did my due diligence prior to purchase... However, it appears I came up short in that regard and missed the fact my car shows to have been built with a GTS hood, but had a six vent SRT when I bought it pre-owned from the Porsche dealer.

Facts as I know them:

1. The Monroney and build sheet both show GTS hood and no SRT in the optional equipment. I pulled these up on-line and do not have the originals.

2. The carfax was clear pre-purchase.

3. The vehicle shows no sign of prior damage.

Question: Is it possible the hood was swapped at the dealer (unlikely I would think?), or would it be plausable both the Monroney and build sheet left the six vent off accidentally and the car came from the factory with the SRT hood? And, is there any way I can tell by identifying numbers on the hood that would match numbers on the car?

I searched the forum in case this had been discussed previously and could not find anything. If I missed it, I apologize for the duplicate posting.

Thanks in advance for any insight you might be able to provide.

FWIW, I think the 6 vent hood looks and functions much better. Unless it's been in an accident and repaired with the wrong hood. I wouldn't sweat it. Drive it and enjoy it!

Consider yourself lucky IMO...I do understand your concern though but I really like the SRT hood better...

I am sure the previous owner did this on purpose. If you want to go back to GTS you will have no problem finding a local owner with the same color car who will swap with you.

Thanks for the feedback on my question everyone... I like how it looks but once I joined and figured out how to access the build information via the forum it got me to wondering why the six vent didn't show up. And..... lingering in the back of my mind was the possibility of an undisclosed accident.

Bottom line though, the advice to just enjoy the car and drive it is spot on and that's what I will do!

Highly doubt it was an accident and not reported to insurance. That hood painted is close to $10k. I bet 2 owners swapped.

It would be nice if you had a note from the previous owner that he swapped the hoods out of preference for the more aggressive look that many people prefer. Perhaps you might want to post his name (if it is on the title) to see if he is on the forum or contact the local region VOA president to see if the owner is known.

Probably was swapped out by the previous owner - lots of people did that. Or, you may have a unicorn! I remember one owner of a Gen II getting the "smoothie" convertible hood when the vented hoods were the only ones supposed to be available that year. It was an accident at CAAP, and he got one heck of a present from them with that one. I think it is documented someplace to be the only one that ever left the factory like that - a definite one-of-one.

Martin beat me to it. If you have a legitimate factory error, then this is a gazillion-dollar car at Barrett Jackson in 40 years!

What ever happened to that car from back in the '90s? I followed it for a while, and I think it's stuffed away in a collection someplace. Completely lost track of it about ten years ago, though.

That would be nice to have... I checked the title and no previous owner is shown, just us.

Good suggestion on the local VOA.

I know some swapped hoods, but at near $12,000 + paint for a hood and vents from the dealer I doubt "lots" did for looks based on cost alone.

Are you sure the hood is OEM? Agency power makes a 6 vent copy. Original owner might have kept/sold the original OEM.

No, at this point I'm not sure at all. I have owned two vipers in the last 18 months and got way out of my "lane" in buying both. I came out of Porsche / BMW and clearly didn't do my homework before pulling the trigger and that is on me - lesson learned.

No bad news, I did have 076 showing some pretty significant damage from coparts. Alleged {no concrete proof} damage happened in Canada, really doubted he made it back to the states, but I have seen stranger things

Thanks for letting me know, I appreciate your time in checking.

So I'll add to the conspiracy.

In checking, there Texas sold Vipers like yours that had the SRT hood, I found 3, 1 had black stripes so thats no good, one was built in March 2014, a good 7 months after yours and one that was built 09/25/13 (Yours 08/27/16). Tried to find pictures of it to see if it had a GTS hood, I could not...

damn

But then again, both Vipers would have had to have been sold from the same dealer and been on the lot at the same time.... stretch

Merry Christmas and Nice Hood, I think you got the better deal
Vj
Yep, looking at that damn list again

Merry Christmas to you! This one supposedly sold at Grapevine Dodge here in DFW. I've probably bought a kit car and did not know it lol... j/k

In all seriousness I appreciate everyone's help.

Wow and look at all those typos I tossed in there

Bill Pemberton

Could have been something as simple as the car was a leftover 2014 and the Dealer had two cars the same color. Car had been collecting dust for a long time and buyer came in saying, " I will buy that car if you switch hoods with the SRT you also have." Not saying this was done, but it could be just one of many simple answers that caused a change. There is honestly just as much chance it was a factory slip up , or one in which a Dealer called late to get a hood change, it was accomplished, but never showed up on the build sheer or Monroney ---- not far fetched we have had this happen in years past.

I have been following this thread and checked my window sticker on my 2014 Adrenaline Red GTs and noticed it was built with the SRT hood which was an additional $500. I has a GTS hood which looks nice , but I always wondered whether it may have been switched before delivery or not. I bought it used and saw photos in an Automobile magazine photo shoot of my car ( it was a corporate owned car) and it had my current GTS hood. My 2014 had a VIN of 0141 and build date in late August 2013, so I wondered whether your car has a close VIN to mine.

viperr - Mine is 0249, so I'm not sure how close that would be in the world of Gen 5 vins. I believe the build date is 08/27/13 and that would be very close to yours... Interesting yours was a corporate car.

That is definitely OEM.

That is OEM, and has the early crappy vents, they have made revisions with clips that are very secure , I had to have two of them replaced because they were loose I called FCA and told them that they should replace them all under warranty as they are a hazard if they fly off into another car, but they deneyed that and just replaced the loose ones.

Thanks for the info. It looks like mine was made on a Thursday and yours on a Tuesday, so they may have been hanging around together at Conner. The original owner was an SRT manager who had it 2 years and occasionally allowed press to use it. It also had the insets in the headrests in carbon fiber that was not on the window sticker, but no other interior carbon fiber. It also listed the Venom Hyper wheels, but actually had the Track pack with the black wheels on it. It shows it in the video that Automobile magazine published https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5EYU3QsFGo . I managed to find the video my car was in and you can see the black wheels. By the way it must have been fun trying to keep the Viper from running away from the C7 considering that The Stingray had 175 less HP.

Even though the press used the car it has been great. I got it with 9,000 miles on it last January and now have 18,000 and I am enjoying it and its 10 year 100,000 mile warranty extension.

Thanks on the car, I like it so far. It past the recalls and with the 10yr./100K warranty I actually plan on driving it.

The thread and all the feedback taught me a lot personally and one big take-away was I need to pay real attention when buying Vipers because of things like owners swapping hoods, etc. What I'm trying to say is - at least for me - it is somewhat different than buying a two year old 911 Turbo or a late model M car... and just because I might know something about that, it doesn't mean the knowledge is universal. I could have very easily gotten an aftermarket hood (I missed) run up my tailpipe because of an unreported accident.

It's a humbling experience to have to ask these guys to tell me if my hood is OEM for sure and I appreciate their help.

Just as a side note, I don't think anyone has confirmed whether or not the 10yr./100K warranty is transferrable from the original owner. I believe the paper states that it is not.

Love your new viper though. Looks like it's it's great shape and the SRT hood is definitely the better option IMO.

Thanks, I try to keep it nice. I bought it with 2400 miles on it, got the recalls done and have been taking it out almost every week. It now has 3800 miles and I'm getting more and more comfortable with the drive characteristics.

They actually sent me a letter on the warranty extension and then I followed up with an SRT case manager and confirmed it was extended to me as the second owner again in an email.

I don't know if that applies to all the second owners or just certain cars affected by the recall. SRT was very helpful though, at least to me.

No big mystery, here is my 14 GTS built at the factory and delivered with the SRT hood with GTS stripes. The stripes have a slight taper to them that the GTS hood stripes do not.
I believe that this is the first one built this way. They clipped me an extra $500 for it.

It was a pleasure to meet Jeremy very nice guy and true snake guy. I invited them to spend the night at Tara Tarpon but one of his buddies is tying the knot so he had to head back. I asked him to relay a message to his friend that my dear ole pappy told me just before I got married, the first time. Jerry took me aside and said "Boy I hope you have the common sense to understand this...marriage is a lot like your Saturday night bath... after you're in it a while it ain't so hot". I miss old Jerry and his good advice, wish I'd a listened back then.

I try to sell my cars to folks that really want them and he is the right guy for this car. It says a lot for this forum that he was comfortable enough to buy a car sight unseen, just pictures and the story. I can't wait to see him post about it.

Thank you for the referral, next time you are in my neck of the woods stop by for a couple of my world famous Mojitos.

Make sure to ask him to show you the little extras that came with the car, I think he liked them :t1567:

Yes, he loves the car and I'm happy he's out of his Gen 3 and into a Gen 5. I've been trying to get him into a Gen 5 forever, but he wanted a loaded GTS with SRT Hood. When I saw your thread on the car when you bought it, I knew he would own it one day. I'm looking forward to seeing the car in person soon!
