Can anyone recommend a good dash cam? Maybe something that can use the power port on the mirror with good high resolution??
Thanks for any recommendations
This thread is relevant to my interests as well.

I have had a Blackvue installed for approx two years in my Grand Cherokee. it has the front and rear high res cameras, as well as speed and gps position superimposed on each frame. The problem with it is that it eats micro SD cards. It also does not like all SD cards. They are strange in that they have no domestic headquarters, after market sites/stores support them. Do a google on "Blackvue SD card" and you will see what i mean.

I've quite enjoyed my Mini 801 dash cams for 3 years. Perhaps the smallest available, have one on windshield to right of mirror wired to pigtail and plugged in at mirror, and one in back for track videos plugged into accessory outlet between seat backs. Audio sucks on track but video with GPS info is very good.
This video is shot from the rear camera until 9:19 (you can see the placement of the windshield cam to that point), and then video switches to footage from that windshield cam until the end.

The Mini 801 has been replaced by other models, of which the Mini 806 might be the best.

That looks pretty clear for a video of a video!

Very interested to see additional responses here. The 801/806 looks (looked) promising but it's ratings are abysmal on Amazon. The Blackvue looks to have marginally better reviewers but at nearly 4x the cost. I too would love a decent dash cam that can utilize our mirror's pigtail plug in. I love the idea of the 801/806 form factor but would feel more comfortable with something that has earned higher marks.

A major reason for the on-line complaints about the 801 when I bought mine was traced to people using the popular Class 10 Micro SD card rather than the Class 6 that was specifically recommended. Not sure what any current complaints might be related to, but I had no issue with two of the 810s. Check replacement warranty for whatever brand you choose as it seems like most brands and models get some bad user reviews.
A feature I've used a lot is the ability to quickly remove the camera from its mount and use it outside of the car for taking stills of video using the internal battery. It's also easy to take stills with it on the dash to capture things you see along the way and they don't get over-written like old video until you actually delete them.

I use the Blackvue DR650GW-2CH, and I've been very happy with mine, it's proved useful several times, and I have been able to read a few license plates, but that can be difficult sometimes with any camera setup. The software makes finding a specific event relatively easy, plus you are able to zoom in when needed. There is no way to set focus though, so sometimes the focus isn't perfect, depending on where the camera is facing (meaning the hood can be in focus, but the car in front is slightly out of focus. Mine is tied in through the pigtail, and the camera turns on and starts recording immediately on its own, and turns off when the car is shut off. You can erase the card from the camera in 7 seconds if needed.
I "found" this photo of a photo....umm...online... If I was at home, I would be able to get you some footage from my actual setup. The front camera is 1080p, rear camera is 720p.

I see that too, saying they all fail. The audio quality sounds awful as well. Hopefully more opinions come through here. There's a Lumina on sale for 110 on Amazon right now with great reviews and I might just pick that up.
