View Full Version : Sending my 2013 to Calvo Motorsports for some goodies

I've posted the problems I've had with my '13 since it got the new '15 motor several times here (car shutting off, erratic idle with Arrow computers (tried two different ones) installed etc)
I'm having Calvo convert to Motec programmed by https://www.facebook.com/ninjaneeringco/
Hopefully this will solve all my problems I've had for the last year. The Motec will also allow no lift shifts with the PPG Sequential tranny they are also going to install.
(See attached pic of tranny he's already building for me)
If you haven't seen their sequential in action yet, check it out here- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_PqnQ2Mhj4&t=3s
They are also doing heads/cam and dry sump oiling setup. I hope to have the car back by my next track event mid January.

Calvo's. Their last setup was over 700rwhp, we are going to tone down the RPM's a bit for road racing reliability.

A shame you have to spend your own money to get a car you bought from factory to run properly but awesome none-the-less.
I wish the PPG shifter had a more stock looking shifter though. A lower profile...

No, not really. It's got the 2.0 splitter on the front, I'd like somebody to make me a 1.0 style rear spoiler, but extended maybe another 2" all the way across.

They do that on purpose to limit hand travel distance in between shifts and putting your hand back on the wheel. Makes sense when you're making big power but I see what you're saying.

Yeah I know the practical reasoning behind it. Odds are if you have a PPG in your Viper you're probably pushing big power and drag racing. But I'm a fan of modifying cars to look stock.
Would be even cooler if someone could make a paddle shift sequential for the Gen V!

:devilish: I'm tired of killing GT3's and GTR's all over the track, then they walk away from me on the straights with less power just due to their paddle shifters. Losing 1 to 1.5 seconds on a straight due to shifting 2-3 times vs a paddle shifted 40 millisecond shift and watching cars with 200 less horse power pull away from sucks.
It also sucks to have to spend a small fortune just to get my Viper to shift as fast as any Porsche, Nissan GTR, etc, but will be worth it!

Are you going to install 3.07's.
No, but that's a great point you bring up. We are raising redline in 6th gear only (that's the beauty of Motec) to 7000rpm.
So in the rare situations where I'm on a track where I would need to go 155, I'd be able to.
1:1 top speed with 3.55's at 6400 RPM's= 142mph. At 7000 RPM= 155mph.
Jack B
12-07-2016, 09:32 PM
Just an opinion, you are better off with 3.07's and dropping the rpm. Better engine life and you can use it on the street. As it is, it is a stretch to use on the street, especially for any highway driving.

Agreed for a street car, but mine is a dedicated track car. Once I get the car back and start tracking it, I can make a decision if I want to change the rear gears or not. As it stands now if I had to drive on the freeway I'd be at 3200 RPM's at 71mph. Not ideal, but not the end of the world if I have to run the car down to the shop here and there.

I don't speed on the street, EVER. I've got too much to lose. There are only a handful of tracks in America where you would reach 155, none of which I frequent.

When tuners change the fuel cut rpm on these cars, are they capable of making a comesurate change to the RPM display on the dash since it's all digital? For example, on my car 6250 appears to be the redline, on a 6700rpm car will they change the redline to 6700rpm? I know it's a bit neurotic, but it bugs me when that kind of stuff isn't correct.

I was spinning mine to 7,000 for a time and no, we didn't actually change the color orientation on the gauge. I just knew that I wouldn't hit the fuel cut until 7,000. That being said it wasn't something that bothered me so we didn't address trying to change it either. Might be something Antonio and ninjaneer can change though via their standalone.

Yeah I do miss the GEN V at times but I can't live without a Supra in my garage lol. I do plan on building this one even though its considered to be rare being that its a turbo factory hardtop with 29k miles on it and all matching vins. Also a one owner cars but as you said, Supras need to be modded, well for me EVERY car needs to be modded. Life's too short to stay stock. Still wish I could get a ride in a turbo Viper. No. Unfortunately, the RPM at which the gauge turns red is built into the dash. I would have to dig into the compiled code in the dash and change it to fix that, so not really worth it.
Can the no-lift upshit and downshift be made to work with the stock PCM?
For the sequential, there are boxes that can piggyback ECUs without the ability to properly control the shifting, but it's not recommended, and nobody knows if it would throw any lights on the dash. I personally wouldn't spend $18k on a transmission with a $500 piggyback box controlling. The MoTeC offers so many additional features that it pays for itself. Traction control, knock control, closed-loop fuel control, launch control, and no limit to the tuning potential.

Not even with a stand alone box like Pro-Shift or Geartronics? They claim closed loop with DBW compatibility on any ECU.
We haven't tried, but I doubt it would work remotely close to the way the motec controls it. If you are going to spend 18k on a trans I am a firm believer do it once, do it right.

Understood but there are a few of us dinosaurs out there that prefer to stick with the factory electronics.

It may technically be feasible, but I can't imagine the driving experience would be pleasant by any means. The MoTeC has an incredibly sophisticated shift sequence with numerous different stages, using closed-loop control with both the force and positions sensors. A piggyback unit may be able to get it to shift, but we don't know how the engine would behave, especially given the stock torque management, which is still not well-understood. As for downshifting, it's pretty simple to blip the pedal yourself, it's just less convenient, especially when racing, with your foot on the brake.

Did you ever get the chance to weigh your car ? And also how loud is the VE ti exhaust as I'm considering changing my corsa to it if it saves a lot of weight.
Thanks

It's 3010 lbs. The dry sump setup added some weight obviously. I'll be around 2980 when I get my race seat installed. I'm probably doing a cage too, so that's going to add another 120-130 back in.
The VE titanium exhaust is very loud and doesn't save much weight, it's just the straight muffler section, not from the headers back like the Agency Power setup.

Absolutely impressive. Can't wait to see the numbers on your beast.
I can't help but wonder the carnage an ACR with this setup and 2980lb weight would cause on track.

I'll be adding the factory ACR aero parts asap, I've slowly been accumulating them piece by piece. I just installed the rear ACR diffuser. I'll be running Doug Shelby's extreme extreme extended strakes and extreme extreme front splitter extension as well. Shocks are MCS double adjustable from Woodhouse.
