I drove the ACR to work today because I have to go to the race shop at Sonoma Raceway and I figured that it would be a good opportunity to put some miles on that car.
As I was driving on a busy highway, some random dude honked at me. I was kind of expecting a rice rocket of sort or (hoping for) a good looking woman giving me the thumbs up.
Turned out to be neither of those... It was a guy in a late model Corvette. I don't know if he got confused and thought that I was also driving a Corvette or if he was just acknowledging the fearsome ACR :D
Regardless of the reason, I thought that was nice to get an acknowledgment from a 'rival'.

Pretty brave to drive around here this morning in the ACR - I had frost on my roof and it was in the mid 30's when I went outside. Not sure if you had to go over Highway 17 or not, but that one is scary with hockey-puck tires and idiot drivers all around you.

When you have a brand new car a little less than ideal weather is not stopping you.

Hahaha, right I go over 17 every day and it was about 9C when I left.
Didn't encountered any issues but then again, the traffic was pretty darn slow. I was thinking of going to Sonoma Raceway on the week-end but it's going to rain and I prefer lower temps over rain with that car. Don't get me wrong though, I love driving in the rain but that's when I have tires that are not racing slicks :p

I know - but after driving that highway with different Vipers over the years, and almost ending up in the concrete barrier around some of the off-camber hairpins because some idiot in a minivan was doing 70 when they should have been doing 40, I cringe at the thought :) That highway is horrible - lots of very stupid drivers and the road is not engineered too well. There's a wreck on it just about every morning, and always in the same places.

That highway is sketchy at best during commute hours. At least when it's going slow, you don't have people flying into the barrier just over the summit on the way to Lexington. That one off-camber right-hander always seems to claim victims in big bunches because one idiot takes it too fast, gets out of control, and takes out the whole field. It's a fun road - when nobody else is on it... I much prefer Highway 9, except for all the cops hiding everywhere.

That's pretty cool, I was coming through town the other day and a newer corvette came up quick beside me on the four lane, I thought he might want to try to get me to mess around or run them. I looked over and he had his cell phone up snapping a picture and then waved. I laughed at that.

Porsche drivers are the funniest. You could have a pink Viper on fire with lightning bolts shooting out the top and they will not look at you.
Eyes dead ahead with that sullen look on their face.

lol I laugh at this with Ferrari and lambo owners. They have that same look on their face and they appear totally unhappy. I don't care what brand it is, you should be enjoying your sports car! Why not acknowledge other enthusiasts as well?

You can really tell who the actual car people are vs. the status people.
Some guys are all smiles and waving or taking pics, and some are just ice cold. I try so hard not to be that guy, even if I'm in a horrible mood I'll wave back or say thank you.
I was shocked this summer, I got invited by some of the exotic guys to come hang out with them some time, but I didn't get the time to go check it out.

Martin, your description of 17 brings memories of the time that I had to use it from Santa Cruz to San Jose due to a road closure Going North in the late afternoon, bumper to bumper and door handle to door handle in the pack moving well above the posted limit was not much fun...especially in a boat-of-a-rent-a-car. :)

I disagree with this but definitely relate with viperJons Porsche observation. Most guys in gallardos give me a ton of respect on the road. Guys in aventadors and F cars don't really pay me any attention but unhappy is far from what they look. To be blunt I think they pay no attention as its like a cobra Stang pulling up next to me. I used to have a Stang and know they can be very fast but I'm not trying to even care if it's fast or faster than me. At this level I'm more than stop light racing and therefore I pay many cars no attention. I think the Italian horse brothers are at the top of the food chain so unless you are in a hyper car, there is no motivation to engage looking as it has already been registered in their brain to not peak their interest. It's has nothing to do with being sullen, salty or anything...they just don't want to be bothered by having to turn their head and engage with someone in a car of no interest to them.

I don't know, I think in that case, being in a rental - and a beast of a car at that, just go with it and have fun. Nothing like smashing up a car that won't cost you a penny. lol!

You got off lucky. I was driving out of the local Roosters when a patio goer screamed "nice Corvette!!!" to which I could see about 1/4 of the patio erupt laughing.
f***er got me good. :owned: It took about 30 seconds of idle at the light for me to feel 110% again. You know because I'm in a Viper.

My Boss commutes that every morning, she leaves from Soquel Dr.
I prefer Sonoma too, but you are a lot closer to Laguna. :D

One of my scariest moments was driving that road in my '97 Gen II a few years ago. It was just like you described - a pack of cars moving at above the posted limit, and I was in the fast lane. The car next to me was full of gawkers who probably had never seen a Blue/White Gen II except in magazines, and the driver was paying more attention to my car than the road. Of course, when we hit one of those off-camber turns, he swerved towards my right front quarter, I hit the brakes, locked up my tires momentarily, and just barely missed going straight into the concrete divider. The cars around me just barely avoided crashing, too. It was definitely a holy $hit moment for about five cars full of people. From there on out the whole pack of cars drove like grandmas all the way down into Los Gatos. The drivers on that highway can really ruin a perfectly good day.
That's why I use Highway 9 when going to/from Santa Cruz now. It's slower, and you're more likely to get pulled over, but you don't get into those unwinnable battles with a surrounding pack of cars.

Get in the ACR and head north to Thunderhill for tomorrow's session. It's 59 degs at the moment.
Much to my surprise when i had the Orange TA sitting next to the (new to me) Ferrari FF, i thought that the FF would in some way be superior to the TA. Not the case. They are different vehicles and serves different purposes. You better believe that i am looking at anything from a Mustang to a Corvette to a Viper to whatever stands out. Thumbs up to all.
BTW. I am very happy driving the FF every day - even if it was 23 degrees F this morning going to work.

I do like Sonoma better than Laguna but that's true, I'm 45min away. I'm on a cross road to Soquel Dr as well, near the hospital, if she ever sees a Competition Blue ACR, that would most likely be me :D

I'm 500 miles away from being able to track the car and I'm still waiting for the darn diff to come in... Ugh. Hopefully, I can go to BWizzle in December, Todd will be there I think.

That's true. I usually get more thumbs up and screaming "Nice car bro!" from regular joe type of people. Some dude in a plumber van did just that this afternoon while I was on my way back to the office. Sometimes I'll catch people snapping pics of the ACR too.

I've had Vette guys wave in the on coming lane, but I'm pretty sure it's because they thought I was driving a Vette.
I've had a few Lambos wave or give me a thumbs up. Pretty much every time I'm out in the car someone waves, takes a picture, or I get multiple complimentary comments. I didn't get the car for the attention mind you, but I always am sure to wave back or give a warm thank you to their comments.
Just this morning this guy in a pickup truck in front of me stuck his arm out of his window two times to give me a thumbs up. At a red light he got out of his car and ran back to me and told me how beautiful the car is and how rarely he sees one. He said, "It's giving him the chills and it's making him want to go crazy driving right now!" Lol

Lol.. so true. P cars are nice but the owners suck except a friend of mine that has a 997TT.
Lots of folks here own both Vipers and Vette.... so it could've been one of those dudes that happen to be driving his vette.
