Best tires

hey yall

I am going to run the car again at the WannaGoFast event in January.

I want some better tires. I had to start off in 2nd gear because first gear was a joke on the old runway.

What sticky tires will work with the Gen V rear wheels???? What would you pros recommend?

R888's or NT05R's at your power level.

I believe some cars use a drag radial. There are several 18" drag radial/wheel combinations that would work. The drag radial would definitely allow you to accelerate faster, but, will they give you a higher trap speed??

Well I am figuring that it should give me a higher trap speed. Last time I'm not going WOT until I'm doing like 60 mph and a couple hundred feed down the track already. I was starting off in 2nd.

I want to be able to use up as much of the track as possible.

Ever since I installed the headers on the car, the traction control light comes on in 1st and 2nd gear now and cuts power....feels like a total animal now and I love it!!! Last year I did every run without the traction control on because the car went into limp mode after the very first run (with traction control on) and scared the bejesus out of me..... So, if i am spinning on the street in 80-90 degree weather, then i sure as hell will have a traction problem if the weather is the same as last time.... 33 degrees all day.

Ideally id like to use the stock rear wheel. I just want to be able to snap 1st gear and go WOT the entire 1/2 mile.

I learned how do no-lift-shifts at the 1/2 mile event and I'm confident there.

I've answered your question and proven it with results. You're making it more complicated then it needs to be.

The key with any tire is doing a good enough burnout to get them warm.

The Mickey Thompson's are the stickiest tire option but you will have to run a 18.

Either option I listed will work fine. It's not like you're making that much power.

Another +1 for the Nitto NT05Rs. I am running them on my GTS now and even though I'm pretty much stock, the grip is impressive, especially when you get a little heat in them.

Good to know. That's some good info right there. I regularly see 1.5g+ on my stock Pirellis.

After the race I'll pull them off then.

You're totally right! I'm a road course guy and I don't trust the NT05Rs much in the twistys. The Sidewalls are way too soft. Makes the rear even more squirly than it already feels when the ABS is doing it's thing. It sounds like the OP is looking for straight line tires since he only wants to change the rears.

Yup. Just for the 1/2 mile event.

I'll throw in another angle....hp is what is going to get high mph and if you're taking the hit either at 40 mph or 60 mph (rolling starts, right?) hard launches aren't going to be as big of a deal IMO.. My theory is your car will do 15x MPH whether you have a soft take off or launch hard off the pad. I would be concerned if using super cushy sidewall drag type tires because of how crappy they handle at high speeds if you get a wiggle or out of shape for some reason.

A lot of the guys that are running huge numbers in the 1/2 and 1 mile events run Hoosier R6's (or now the R7's) or equivalent. A fresh set of Toyo R888 heated up will probably give you all the traction you'll need, especially if you adjust the psi down a little....plus they still have sidewall stability for handling. I don't think you can compare a car that is running full out drag radials or slicks on a prepped drag strip to a runway that has dust, grit, painted surfaces, etc. Lots of variables there.

The last 1/2 mile event I did was a bitch since one lane had large painted numbers and symbols on the runway. This was right up until you hit the "go" spot. You'd have some traction on the left side, then the right side, etc. I couldn't get it to hook up on my stock Michelins since the airport would not allow burnouts on the runway. But, I ran the same 160 mph at the end of the 1/2 mile regardless if I was in the lane with traction or the not so good lane. Obviously, side by side racing is a different matter where the winner crosses the finish line first, mph not such a big deal, just getting they first.

Have fun....be careful if the temps are really cold.

Get better tires. When My MT ET streets are warm I can launch around 1200 HP and last time I dead hooked with no spin.

So far I've run Hoosier A7's, Michelin pilot super sports, R888's and Pirelli P Zeros. Out of those the R888's were the only ones that dead hooked consistently in first. The Hoosiers were close but not consistant enough for me even when warmed up.
