For first viper with repairable body damage?
My father in law backed into it.
Stored in my garage.
I think my wife is more upset than me, I am containing my rage well so far.

Not the end of the world, easy fix. Why lose it for something that you can no longer control and can be fixed??....not worth it. Look at it this way, no little kid got ran over, no injuries, just a little damage. I'll take that over the 100's of worse outcomes auto accidents often produce.
Now the fun part, ........since it was your wife's dad, good time to guilt her into making it up to you:)

Damn Harold, that sucks! This reminds me of just a couple of months ago when my new Camaro was up on a shop's lift getting suspension work, and they lowered the car with the door open. Major damage, but all fixed now. Water under the bridge.
Be thankful you have a solid color, very easy to repaint. Times like this make me second guess getting my Stryker Red tri-coat!

Ouch! If it wasn't for the wrecked one at the drag strip we all saw the pic of (I wonder what happened there?) then you'd definitely win the award. That settles it, with a less than perfect carfax you may as well burn it to the ground, it's worthless now! Or you could just enjoy the hell out of it when it's repaired to new condition. I know that's what I'll be doing now that I have a major warranty claim that would keep most buyers away. No more worries about keeping the miles low!

Sounds like you need a bigger Garage? :D
But Seriously,
Very sorry to hear your news, So is it just paint or a little more? Trouble is if you go down the insurance route that may flag up a problem on a Carfax type report in the future. Totally Sucks :(
Not sure on your cover but it may too affect your renewing insurance premium too :( (unless you have claim protection)
Insurance may work slightly differently in the USA?

I wouldn't file an insurance claim, nor would I work with a shop that would report it to Carfax.
I was planning to get the entire car repainted anyway within a year or two to Orange, but with this it just looks like shit right now.
It is so cold I can't even use rinseless car wash to clean it off to see if I can clay it.
But, there are markings on the bumper and rear fascia.
Even more annoying was his car has a backup camera. I just don't feel like dealing with this at all, so many other things. Oh well, not like I can drive the car with 9* temperatures out.

we have a steep slope to get into it. my wife and i were taking the baby to her first appointment in the other bay of the garage, as I was pulling out i heard a "crunch" - of him backing into the car (wife had him over to do something for her in the house).
i didn't even have time to look at it. Now I am home it is both the rear fascia and bumper that are scraped up.
I am not mad (because in the end it is a car), I am just annoyed.

Without a doubt I will drive mine to death - I don't think we all mind (as much) when it is our own stupidity that causes damage to the car!

I doubt clay will take that off, but a good wet sanding and buffer will make it like new. Sorry to hear this, sucks, but like others say it is better then what could happen.

Unfortunately you are wrong about this. Anytime your car gets damaged and you get it repaired by a professional who has to order new parts for your car for the repair of the accident, it gets reported to Carfax.
How do I know? A week after we bought our Buick Enclave (with the special triple white pearl effect paint job that cost an extra $1,000) a couple years ago in anticipation of our first child, my wife decided to drive the big SUV to work in Manhattan for a few short hours despite my pleading with her not to. Told her that the cost of tolls, parking, and gas would cost more than she would earn working for the day, not to mention the fact that she had never driven an SUV before and was taking a huge risk of having an accident as this would be her maiden voyage in the car. Of course, like many wives enjoy doing, despite all logic being on my side, she did the exact opposite just to be contrary, and drove it in and parked in an underground garage. On her way out of the garage after work she proceeded to turn the wheel too soon and scraped the entire right side of the car along the concrete barrier columns by the entrance of the garage, all the while fully realizing what she did. Panicked, after getting the car stuck on the column halfway through, she floored it and proceeded to wreck the back half of the car so the entire right side was destroyed and ripped apart. Looked like a wrecking ball had been taken to the entire right side of the car. Cost of repair? Over $10,000 of cash for a brand new car!!!!! No insurance company so we wouldn't get slammed on our rates. Long story short, no police were involved as she just drove off as if nothing happened, but totally knowing I was probably going to kill her. Since the repair shop had to order new body panels from Buick, it had to get reported to Carfax.
Since then she's managed to scrape up several panels of the car by driving into several non-moving objects, and the interior of the luxury SUV looks like a Cheerios and cheese nips factory from all the half eaten snacks my son drops everywhere (my cars are no food zones for that exact reason). I wouldn't be surprised if we had families of rats living in there too. Next car she gets will be a 10 year old beat up Dodge Caravan so I won't care if she wrecks or smashes that car to oblivion like this once beautiful car. Haha!

If I didn't know better I'd say we were married to the same woman! My wife has done $18k damage to her 07 Santa Fe but it's been in 3 separate occasions so they never totaled the vehicle. Heck it only cost $27k brand new! Twice she's hit something in the drivers front corner and another time scraped the passenger rear door in her parking garage. The good news is at 140k miles it looks brand new, mainly because the front end is only 20k miles old. She knows she's hell on cars and is content to drive it into the ground. I just know that day could always be tomorrow!

I can led credence to Viperdan's post.
I crashed my 09 Vert to the tune of a $53k repair (by Indian Auto Collision-Katonah, NY, a well respected Viper fixer) bill, all cosmetic damage and parts, which were ordered from Chrysler. No other car/person/property damage involved. Police came on scene, no report filed, but they did give me a ticket for being a jerk...I forgot the real reason for tik, it was over 4 yrs ago. Anyway, there was no carfax report done on the car.
Few years later I sold the car back to a dealer, who put it up for sale in local paper and internet. A VCA member who saw the ad thought it was my car. He pm'd me with the VIN and asked if it was my car, which it was. He had checked it with carfax, and there was no info or report listed for my VIN! Don't remember who the VCA fellow was...could have been Viperdan (who is local) for all I remember :-)

Interesting! I am in the car business and we deal with Carfax every day, I can tell you I have never seen a painted car that DID NOT have police involved be on a report. Heck I have seen cars with literally no damage be on Carfax b/c they got tapped at a stop sign and called the cops out of fear of being sued.

I think it ending up on car fax is completely dependent on a shop reporting it or not - not the ordering of parts. IMHO if you are getting repairs done make sure you confirm with the shop if they report or not. AFAIK Carfax pays shops to report damage.

I can guarantee you that either a body shop employee contacted the insurance company by error notifying them of the damage when your car was in their hands.... or your wife called the insurance company without telling you possibly thinking she could resolve this on her own and then denied doing so out of fear.
Ordering parts had nothing to do with Carfax.
Carfax ONLY mines their info from 3 sources. 1) DMV 2) Police 3) dealers maintenance/service records.

Hey Harold
I don't post very often...but like all the true enthusiasts on the forums, I felt a twinge of pain when I saw your post, and had to check out this thread. Sorry to see this.
But, the truth is, most of us have done far worse to our own cars over the decades, and this looks fairly minor. What is not minor is the new addition to the family! Congratulations!! You and your wife need to get all the sleep you can for the next 2 months...as a working father with 5 kids, I know that life is certainly turned upside down in those first 2 months. Especially for your wife....take veryyyyyy good care of her, constantly. And did I mention to get all the sleep you can?....
Deal with the Viper later - you have bigger priorities to manage. Take care of the Mrs and the little one. The Viper will understand ;)
Viper's have a way of waiting patiently for spring, so that they can emerge from the lair to do big hairy burnouts when we most need them...trivial paint damage or not
Congrat's!

Maybe I'm wrong then.....? And maybe I just brought my car to the wrong repair shop because they were the body shop that Buick sends any/all of their new cars to if they get any damage on them before a sale is made. And I thought this guy was best able to replicate the special triple coat paint color since he's done it a million times before. Anyway, my story definitely has holes in it because i dont remember the specifics anymore, but the owner of the place basically said that it would get picked up by Carfax based on the nature of the repairs being done and the parts he had to order from the manufacturer. Never checked my Carfax report, so it could actually be clean...?
And yes, huge congrats to the OP on the newborn baby!!!!! Best of luck to you and I hope you have a baby that learns to sleep through the night quickly. We are expecting our second child in July, so my summer driving season might get cut very short this year.....for a very good reason!
