2014 GTS- Bone stock ~16000 miles. Cold, the car shows oil pressure at about 42psi when at idle. Hot, she is showing 28-32psi at idle. Oil is RP 0-40. Level is at top of the safe mark. Also observed that when hot, the oil pressure indicated rarely goes over specifically 66psi at WOT. I am leaning towards thinking the sensor is bad, but they usually show 0 or 99 when they fail so I wanted to get some input from anyone else who might be having/had this issue.

Your numbers sound right to me.

This forum with all these spun bearing threads is making people paranoid. Oil thins out when it warms up....that is why your oil psi at hot idle is reading a tad lower then when it is cold and is completely normal.

FYI according to the Chrysler manual curb idle speed oil psi (when hot) is a minimum of 10 psi and oil psi at 3000 rpm acceptable range is between 45 and 75 psi. So all your numbers are within proper limits.

I've seen as low as 29 at idle, when very hot outside, and have been driving a while. Normal. When on throttle when warmed up, pressure usually mid-70s. I'm on the stock Pennzoil 0W 40. And you're correct, when the sensor goes, you'll now it. It will probably read 0 or 100.

We are all paranoid about our oil. And for good reason.

Sounds right to me as well, I have seen as low as 29 at idle with warm temps and driving for a while.

Whether or not it is in range, it is lower than the many that have posted in the past, change the gauge.

When did RP start making a 0-40?

Jack, agreed his WOT pressure is lower, while hot idle is normal. When my car starts cold, initial idle pressure is in the 80s, so maybe he does have a gauge issue. I think that we wanted to reassure him though that is hot idle is normal, and what the rest of us see.

By gauge, you guys mean sensor, right?

Correct. What we're saying is, no worries about your pressure.

There is practically no bearing load on an engine at idle, so you don't need much pressure. The age-old rule of thumb is 10psi per 1000 rpm still holds true. On the high side, (warm) anything much over 60psi or so just leads to parasitic power loss for the engine, and extra oil spray (windage) in the crank case that saps power and can foam the oil. Higher oil pressure may be necessary if you have significant boost levels that are causing scuffing of the rod journals or rod bearings. This assumes you are using a premium full-synthetic in the first place.

I have about 80psi cold idle.

Hot is around 35.

I'm at 80 cold and 39-40 at idle hot.

Edit ..... In extreme hot(heat index was over 100 yesterday with 70% humidity) I was at 33-35 at idle, my oil temps were 196.

I see 27 psi at idle when hot with oil temp at 201 (110 outside temp). No worries here.

110 outside? Where are you?

So, for the OP, your hot readings are what the rest of us are seeing.

Your normal. I average 27-30 operating temp, when warm out in so-cal at idle. 70-75 cold start-up, depending...

198deg oil temp gives me 37-38psi at idle.

I average 42-45 hot, most customers cars I'm in average 35-40 hot.

That's my range as well - here in hot humid 90s this summer, average 28-32 hot idle sitting at a traffic light.

Thanks all for the inputs. Its fascinating the ranges we are seeing. Consensus is anywhere from 28-40 psi hot idle.

Food for thought.....Pennzoil 0w40 idle psi warm was 35-36 psi @ 194 oil temp. Had oil change at dealer and Viper tech put Mobil 1 0w40 Euro blend in.....car now idles at 38psi @ 195 oil temp. :) Check the difference in the pics.

So all in all.....a little hotter oil temp still showed higher psi with the Mobil 1 Euro.

SNK3BIT, I saw the same PSI difference when I ran Pennzoil Ultra vs Mobil1 in my prior LS7 Corvette. And, it would consume a little oil with the Pennzoil, none with the Mobil1.....maybe I'll try it with next change.

maybe ill try mobil 1 euro instead of RP next change

Maybe the Gen V section needs a sub forum dedicated to checking oil, warranty denials, spun bearings etc haha.
This stuff is cloggin up everything else. Pretty soon the whole Gen V first page will just be a bitch fest lol.

Every time i try to load the performance pages i get a black screen with an x in the corner and it never loads, and asks me to register each time and i push register and it does nothing after that, initially when i got the car the registering process sent me the email and i responded, but never communicated back to the car????

If you don't subscribe to UConnect (I dont' in the Viper) some have had to call SRT, CANCEL the Uconnect (which you never had in the first place), and then wait 1/2 or so. Should get your Performance Pages back. Do a search here, there was a large thread on it some months back.

P.S. Referring to my previous post.....the previous owner said Motul300v 5w40 always idled at 38-40 psi too.......and Motul is supposed to be the shit diggity of oil.

Andy... don't forget your car has the VVT system deleted... with the H/C setup you get about an additional 5psi as it is no longer diverted for the VVT Phaser. (Just saying it could explain why it's a touch higher)
