View Full Version : Thinking about upgrading from a Gen IV ACR to a Gen V ACR-E. Worth it?

I have had a low miles Gen IV ACR for about two years. Love it. Was thinking of getting a new BMW M3 for my daily. Now, I'm thinking of not getting a M3 and selling my Gen IV to get a Gen V ACR-E. Is it worth it and that much better? If I do this I'll be driving a boring daily, but seems worth it.

I'm new to the track scene but love it and plan to track the car a lot. Right now the Gen IV is more than enough car, but the Gen V is so cool and it might be the last one.

What are the differences between ACR and 1of1? Other than radio and carpet. Leaning towards 1of1 since I want the radio. Any options you can't get in the 1of1 that you get with the ACR? Trying to not go too crazy with options and a bunch of carbon fiber. Will probably do a classic color. Maybe red with white GTS stripes.

Thanks for your help.

No. The GenIV is an awesome car and faster than 99% of people need on a track or street. Combine that with a great daily like an M4/3 why would you want to have one car vs two? I wouldn't

No comparison to the IV. I loved my 08' ACR more then any car I have ever owned or driven. My 16 extreme blows it away in every sense and not just performance. I could drive it everyday. Even with my full track set up the ride quality is better then my old car. Having back up cam ,GPS etc. I can have my cake and eat it too

I would never compromise my daily driver to buy a Viper ACR. I bought my ACR to track it, which sounds like your plans. If I didn't have an exciting car(s) to DD, I'd blow my brains out. I'd much rather have a Gen IV ACR/M3 garage than a Gen V ACR/Camry garage - the joy of the hours every week behind the wheel of the M3 will surely trump being a few seconds slower around whatever Miller Motorsports Park is now called on the weekend.

Pretty much the simple answer is.............................new ACR-E , 3-4 seconds a lap faster than a Gen IV ACR.

Translation --- 30-40 car lengths ahead , per lap , on a 2.0 mile track.

Nuff said.

Yes, it is the best Viper ever made by a long shot and it may be the last Viper ever made. If you have the means, no brainer IMO

Same response, who the hell needs to be any faster than an IV ACR unless the individual is indeed a VERY skilled pro. Go daily driver and keep your IV

We had an 08' ACR Track car. Got rid of it for the ACR-E. To be used as a Track car only as well. I personally think it's worth it.

Man I hate statements like this. So unless somebody is a "VERY skilled pro", he shouldn't care about going fast or better lap times? Only "Very skilled pro's" should care about faster lap times with any organization on any track in the USA? I would hope that there are MANY guys on this forum that aren't "VERY skilled pro's" that would love to increase their lap times. Bottom line is, from everyone's input, a Gen 5 ACR is MUCH faster than a Gen 4 ACR on a track, 2-5 seconds faster. I would think that ANYONE would enjoy running faster 2-5 seconds on a track regardless of skill level. I'm nowhere near close to being a "VERY skilled professional race car driver", but I, like most other track rats would KILL for half a second on a track, let alone 2-5 seconds."

Go sit in a G5 and compare it to your G4.

The G5 based off of that alone will win you over.

I think the right question is is it worth it to you? IMO from your 1st post my answer would be no. Good thing is, there are no wrong decisions as long as you have a Viper in your garage.

For a large majority of the people the limiting factor of their lap times is not the car. That is the point that I think was trying to be made with those types of statements.

Says the guy with at least seven cars per his signature!!! The OP either doesn't have 7 other cars to play with during the week or he doesn't want to DD them-he only has a "boring" DD. Certainly, if it was in his budget, he, like 99.9% of us, would upgrade to the V, but that's not the case. If I'm limited to two cars, I'm not compromising on the car in which I spend 99% of my time for a few seconds a lap in the 5 or 10 or 15 days I track. If he only had a Miata or Boxter, then my answer would be different - get the ACR! But he has a IV ACR, and last time I checked, those weren't slow turds-7:12 around the ring!!! And since he's new to tracking, maybe the more difficult to handle IV ACR will help with his development as a driver.

Throw some better tires, brakes and a bit of power to your ACR and you just made up a big part of the difference to the new ACR for a lot less.

The Gen IV ACRs are still a force to be reckoned with. If you want to track a lot more, what you currently have is a great choice.

I think the biggest question is, is it worth $70,000 to get a car that is 9 years newer.

Hey all,

Appreciate the posts. I enjoy hearing people's thoughts on cars, especially Vipers. The good news is no matter what I decide I really can't lose.

My inner id really wants the Gen V. I love the looks and would love to pick the exact build. I'm drooling over the build posts on this sight. Looks like an awesome experience. I also like the idea that the Gen V is a nicer street drive too. I like to take my Gen IV out for street drives too. The traction and stability control might be good to have. However, I love the analog nature of the Gen IV.

If I do get the Gen V, my daily will stay a Gen 1 BMW X5. I've got two munchkins who ride in the back and need all wheel drive for the winters. A M3 means I keep the X5 for snow days and become a four car family. I'm telling my wife it makes sense to get a Gen V and stay a three car family. She says it makes sense to not get either and stay a three car family. She just doesn't understand logic. LOL

Probably the most important issue is what I can get for my Gen IV. I wouldn't want to take a big hit just to upgrade.

Not exactly slumming it.

Honestly, you just have to ask yourself if you want the best Viper ever built (by far) sitting in your garage. If that is worth the extra $$$ to you and you can afford it, then go for it.

I think the new Viper is awesome, but is it worth the extra cost to you? Here in Arizona the annual vehicle registration cost is based on the original MSRP, then discounted every year. A new Viper would cost me considerably more in registration and insurance, not to mention the purchase price. For what I use it for and how often as I drive my Viper it isn't worth it to me, but I can certainly see where it would be for others.

Congrats and a great choice to move into the GenV when you still can. I absolutely agree with both sides of this argument but there is no way to compare the IV to the V other than it will not lighten your wallet as much. I still agree any Viper is better than no Viper!

You SumABitch! That's my color combo hehe. So a '17? Congrats! From what I've read there were only 26 red ACR's built in '16.
I'm guessing red car numbers built in '17 will be much higher after everyone saw how badass the Red/White is.....

Arizona Viper, it was the pics of your car that you posted that sealed the deal for me. You have no one to blame but yourself. Hee Hee. The configurater made it look good, but it's even better in real life. Your car looks awesome. I'm amazed there were only 26 reds in 16. Such a great color. I'm sure there will be more in 17 with people deciding to get one before it's too late.

It is a 17. I did red accent ACR interior, red belts, and custom car cover. Wanted to add carbon fiber to the inside, but it cost more than I was willing to pay.

This is what it was for me. My modified IV ACR is just as fast or faster then a V and I have cash left over for purple crack tires when I need them. If you are somehow deranged and want to use a ACR for street and DD use then get the gen V absolutely no question/

Why is someone deranged that DD a gen V viper. Take the splitter off and you have a wing for all intents and purposes and basically a similar car to any other gen V. Tires would go out faster since they are Kumhos but so what. People DD aventadors, huracans, F cars so why not a viper? My grand Cherokee altitude is my DD and I figure out every single way to take my heads and cam TA out instead and I'd argue that is less DD material than a stock ACR. The gen V is a fine DD if you love what the viper is.

Back a number of years before I bought my 04 Mustang Cobra, I concluded it was a bit more money than I wanted to spend on a weekend car. So I started thinking about getting a Mach 1 instead. I hummed and hawed over this decision for several weeks. Eventually my brother said, forget about the Mach 1 as you will regret buying it over the Cobra. He was 100% right as I would have sold the Mach 1 within 3 years account I would have repeatedly been thinking I made the wrong decision.

In my opinion if you can afford it, then I would suggest that you buy the new ACR. Considering you are currently already on the fence and if you are like me, than you will likely end up second guessing your decision to stay with what you until you break down and buy one.

Tough question - I absolutely loved my Gen IV ACR, and I'm a little put off by all the luxury of the Gen V. I think if I still had my Gen IV, I'd keep it - it's the last of the "true" Vipers that lack all the gizmos. But, if you can do it, I'm sure you'll be very happy with the Gen V. You only live once..........

Epic choice.....life is short, get what you want and enjoy it. I'm pretty confident that the rear wing will support at least two child car seats no problem :D

First off, Venom V thanks for the pics. Both those Vipers look great on the track, but I think we know which I like best.

TrackAire, good point about the wing. I think you just figured out my first mods.

As for the Gen IV, getting rid of it is going to be bitter sweet. I love the car and love the fact it's analogue. I've always loved the design of the Gen II, hence why I love the Gen V, but the Gen IV has really grown on me. It looks much better in person than it does in picture. Used Gen IVs really are a great bargain for what they bring to the table and they do leave you with more money to spend at the track and in schools learning how to drive. I'm a little worried the operating cost of the Gen V is going to be a lot higher than the Gen IV. I'm really hoping the CCBs last a very long time and Kumho keeps making tires for them or someone else comes to the table with a great option.

At the end of the day, I really wanted a Viper with white GTS stripes that looks like a Gen II with modern brakes and suspension and aero. I always wanted to order a Viper just the way I wanted it and just couldn't let it slip on by.

Oh, as for the BMW M3, I don't even thing about it anymore.
