I've got a 5000 lb Superwinch on my trailer works great.

Mine's now 5 years old, here's the latest version, 5500

For the battery, I use a marine version, stored inside a hard cover, can't remember the amp? Also, its hooked up to a solar charger.

I have a trailer being built and I'm getting the Superwinch S7500 with the synthetic rope (and remote, but not needed) - few extra bucks, but won't rust or fray over time. I have a winch on my Land Cruiser and my Polaris and the synthetic rope on my Polaris is much nicer to deal with than the steel on the LC. Marine battery is a must.

I might get shot for this but, look at Harbor Freight's winches. They are rated very highly by real world folks in the off road magazines and everyday folks also.

I have their 5k winch and use it regularly. No issues and mine is 3+ years old.
