View Full Version : Weird Gen V things...

After a month with the new car, I've noticed two minor but aggravating "features."
1. The gas gauge seems to go from 1/4 tank to dead empty really fast.
2. Opening the rear hatch is a two-handed operation. This is a safety feature? It's annoying when I am carrying bags, i.e., the only time I ever need to open the rear hatch.
Has anyone else noticed this? Gotten used to it? Found a workaround?

Slightly annoying, but you won't think about them after a few months of ownership.
Quarter tank? Go get fuel.
Rear hatch? Set down your bags.

The rear hatch is a two handed operation on my car as well. The owner manual says to give two clicks on the fob to release the hatch. I have never had this work for me, so i have gotten used to the two handed process and I don't give it a thought any more.
As for the gas gauge the harder I press the pedal on the far right, the faster my fuel gauge goes to empty.

The rear hatch on a Gen IV is a two handed operation, the Gen V is a two finger operation (or one finger and a palm). I don't use the key fob, I just walk up and press the button on the underside of the hatch, and lift up on the hatch. The Carbon Fiber makes the hatch MUCH lighter!

As said, with a little practice, the rear hatch can be opened with one hand.
My 13 is the same, it goes from a 1/4 tank to empty in a blink. What is the largest fill, anyone has had.

I test drove a 16 G550 this weekend and was shocked how heave the rear door is. I does have the full size spare on it, but still, i hardy moves.

Guys
For my hatch, I have to press down on the trunk lid and then depress either the fob, or the button under the lid. Is this what you mean by two handed? I find this to be a pain in the butt and I gotta press down pretty hard or it won't release.

No, I've never done that. To open mine, you must depress the button under the hatch, and simultaneously pull up on the hatch. I've never used the fob, but I imagine it's the same deal. My guess is that pushing it down as you hit the button sort of pops it off on the rebound, but probably isn't the correct way to do it - otherwise it would work for you more often.
Since I have the TA 2.0 wing I can use one arm. Press the key fob while sliding that arm under the wing and push it up.
Ditto, on the ACR, pull up on the wing while pressing fob. When I first got the car I thought the hatch wasn't functional

Hatch is annoying. You have 2 seconds to get it open by hand before it locks again.

2 hands here. Sometimes it will open with 1, but rarely.
My gas gauge is the same. From 1/4 tank to zero in about 10 miles of driving.

Same with Gen IVs. It goes real quick the last 1/4 & when the light comes on you better find a stop.

Weird? Not at all. When I'm less than half I consider that time to get gas. The gas gauge runs on a logarithmic scale like every other car (I wish it was linear).

I never purposly go below 1/4 tank before filling up. The low fuel light feels like a warning that you're less than 10 minutes from running out of gas which makes for a frantic search for a station.

18.15 gallons... believe me that was a close call... (yes, I know the sticker says 16). It was seventy miles past "low fuel warning"...

Also, at startup, when the system auto-connects to your bluetooth music, there is no *bass*. I have to switch to "Radio" and then back to "Media" in order to hear *bass*.

That isn't normal. I use my ipod all the time without that issue.

Strange...I am using an IPhone and it happens in both my Gen V and Challenger....both have the 8.4 system. Think I have an IPod laying around...will try.

I am using the latest Ipod Nano which is fully updated software. Never had a problem. Seems odd that toggling it to and from Radio makes it work. You plugged in USB or Aux?

The rear hatch just takes a little practice to get down. But we should be grateful it works the way it works.
The first click of the button (on the rear not the fob) opens the hatch but keeps the lock on. I imagine it is designed this way so that in the event you forget to close the hatch properly or something impedes it from closing properly, the lock keeps the rear hatch from flying open while driving. It's made out of carbon fiber and it is VERY light. At speed I can't imagine it takes much to lift it and rip it off.
The way I have learned to open the rear hatch is to double click the button on the rear. The owners manual states the second press has to happen within 5 seconds of the first but I think the window of opportunity is much smaller. More like 2 seconds.
In regards to the fuel issue: Whenever I get to 1/4 of a tank, I start to look for a gas station. Better safe than sorry.

The hatch on my Gen IV does the same thing.
As far as the fuel issue, I solved that by bolting a 100 gallon auxiliary tank to the rear bumper. :t0140:

Rexius, so this means the key fob is useless or do you have it press it 4 times? Seems like popping the hatch into a safety lock position doesn't really help you out.

Not sure if calling it useless is the conclusion. Maybe the key fob works the same way? I haven't tried it. I just always find it easiest to use the rear hatch button, since, when I want to open it I need to grab something from it anyway. So why use the fob when I'm going to be standing right in front of it.
I don't have my car with me right now but should have it back this week. Will play around with the fob to see if it behaves the same as the rear button.

All 5 generations ive had go from 1/4 tank to zero quick fast and in a hurry......so does my Ram 1500 hemi but it has a bigger tank.I just don't let them get below 1/4 especially if I'm on the road.Hell my gen.1 and 2 I could watch the needle move in city driving.

Unless there are extenuating circumstances, I never let any vehicle go below 1/4 left. Not good for the fuel pump to run them dry.

Don't get me started on quirks, my driver's side Window has a mind of its own, some day it does the auto close thing others not so much. The latest is the turn signal stalk, signal a turn and the wipers go off for one swipe. when it clicks off, another one swipe. The two items the OP brought up are normal operating processes for the Gen V.

There is a software update to fix this. Problem was that if you get in the car and immediately start it, like within a second, the smart glass feature stopped working. The update now automatically raises window when car is started instead of when door closes. I was the first one to get this update.

yesterday i had a dead battery issue. tried for 30 mins to get my key into the keyhole on the truck.. it didn't wanna turn. finally after 30 mins of fighting it.. the dang thing finally turned 40* to the right... it was tough. so if anyone has this issue turn hard hahahah..
on the trunk popper issue with 2 hands... i installed the new truck lid popper kit from the dealership. had to do a little trimming. quick install in my garage on my 13. that fixed my issue of using 2 hands.. now only need one hand..

Don't pay attention to the gas gauge as much - check your remaining miles available on the app provided. No surprises that way. If your on the hwy for a trip, reset your mpg or litres/100 kms value so the computer can calculate a more accurate distance.
