View Full Version : Dealer replaced side window under warranty. Who foots the bill for the tint.

I was wondering what you guys think about this. Nine days ago I roll the driver side window down on my 2013 GTS with an extended warranty and I hear a clunk. Push the window button and nothing. At that moment I was closer to my local dealer than home so I stopped in and asked if maybe it's and easy fix or at the very least make an appointment to get it fixed.

Tech knows the car and he is the only one that has been inside the doors "door latch recall and wind noise issue". To my surprise he tells me to leave the car and they give me a rental. So nine days later I get my car back and they replaced the window and fixed a couple of rattles on the inside from the last time they had it. All at no charge to me.

I had the side windows tinted when I first got the car so the new window needed to be tinted to match the other side. So I stopped by the tint shop on the way home from the dealer and they happily tinted the new window for $75.00 out of my pocket.

Here's my question: Is the tint that "I" had put on the window something the dealer should play to have put back on the new window. The window was covered under warranty, so I assume that there was a defect in the window.

Or is it my responsibility to pay for the tint as I had it put on there.

Your thoughts?

IMO, it's on you. It sucks, but that's life.

Wow they are proud of their tint, as I paid the same amount for all three of the windows on my car.

you could probably get the dealership to pay for it if you pushed hard enough, not worth it in my opinion. there is a tint brand called autobahn that offers a no fault warranty for free in case things like this happen or you scratch your window with a seat belt or something for the future.

You got to pay to play as it where. People out here on the left coast are anything but bashful when it's time to write up the bill.

Thanks for the input.

There is no need for me to push an already fragile relationship that I have with this dealership.

I need to look at the long term.

When the rear glass in my LE GTS exploded and the dealer replaced the glass they did not re-tint the rear glass as they didn't think they would do a good job. However the SRT hotline said they would pay for the tint bill but just didn't seem worth my time.

As an aside, what exactly was wrong with the window? If the regulator went bad, they usually just replace that (has been an issues for years now). I'm wondering what caused them to replace the window itself.

And yes, I would pay for the tint myself - that's not their responsibility.

I wouldn't expect them to pay for an aftermarket add on.

Lets blow it up... say you had the glass Gold plated... you wouldn't expect them to do anything other than what the factory is required to cover.

$75 is steep for one window that took them less than 10 minutes.

But like others have said, there'd be no reason the dealership should pay for it.

Wouldn't expect them to pay for something I added onto the car.

Yep, it's on you. I had painted engine covers and when the drivers side was replaced from the R28/29, it was on me to get the new cover painted.

I would say SRT wouldn't be liable for the tint but they probably would pay for it as a customer service thing. Case in point, my engine covers on my Comp Blue TA were painted blue to match the car. When the dealer did the R29 recall, which requires changing the driver's side cover, they painted the new cover to match the other side as the new cover came in red. No charge to me.

Also interested in why they replaced the door glass. Never seen that unless they scratched it when they were working on it. To my knowledge there are four things that can cause a glass malfunction in a Gen 5. 1) the door regulator (motor to most of us), 2) the window switch, 3) the door node (electronics module that sits near the door speaker), and 4) the door latch switch (which controls the smart glass function). Most common problems I believe would be the regulator or the node. The node can get wet in heavy rain and short out, its happened to my TA twice. Never heard of the glass being the cause unless you are talking Gen 4s where the glass would sometimes explode.

Gen 4s where the glass would sometimes explode.

Well, that would be startling.

It was for the folks that had it happen. If memory serves it was a bad batch of glass. Sometimes it would explode while just sitting in the garage, sometimes while driving. Never happened to me on any of my cars thankfully because it would have scared the you know what out of me.

Are you sure they painted the new one and just didn't put the old one on? I say this because we didn't send ours back to Chrysler and I have it sitting in my home.

eat it and go on, its only 75.00 bucks on a 100k car, not worth the argument

Yeah, I would need a new driver seat cover.

Not even worth starting a thread over this. Pay to get it tinted and move on

What type of tint are you folks getting that $75 for a door window is high? I had all 3 windows on my 2014 GTS done with Lifetime Super high metallic heat reflective for $275 and that is with the friend and repeat customer discounts. My friends shop in Central Texas has done at least 7-10 of our vehicles over the years.

$275 is the discount? That seems really high.

I get the two front windows of my truck tinted every 3 months and it costs me $90 (different trucks of course).

The cheap tint around here is about $150; but that stuff has to be replaced yearly and has no real heat reflection.

I had my passenger window replaced also about 2 months back...problem was the tabs that hold the window to the assembly broke (not sure how). In my case, the windows still rolled up and down but could hear something rattling in the door.

Yes, I'm sure they painted it. They sent it to their body shop.

[QUOTE=swexlin;223117]As an aside, what exactly was wrong with the window? If the regulator went bad, they usually just replace that (has been an issues for years now). I'm wondering what caused them to replace the window itself.

All I know is that the window fell completely off the track and the glass it self was not damaged. When I called and the tech talked to me he told me that it was impossible for this to happen and he insisted that someone had to have been in the door and messed with window or the door track. I told him that he was the only person that had ever had the door apart and that I had watched the window being tinted a year and a half earlier and at no time did they "window tint guy" remove any part off the car. He finally back down and said he would put it back together. This phone call was at the end of the day on Friday. After thinking about it all weekend it bugged me that he really seemed not to believe what I told him. So Monday morning I went down and talked to the service manager. I was going to get the car back and try another dealership.

On a side note:A month earlier I had a shock replaced under warranty and the same tech told me he couldn't take the shock apart to swap my lowering cap on to the new shock. I contacted Mark J and he told at that time, and I quote" Get your car out of that dealership as fast as you can" I told Mark I was trying to work with this dealer because he is local and could I give them his number and he agreed. The dealer called Mark and Mark walked them thought the shock disassemble. So this was in the back of my mind and my confidence was low before my integrity was questioned.

After my talk with the service manger where he explained that his tech really knows what he is doing and that he is just a little high strung at times. So I left the car there and later that day I got a call from the service manger and he told me that they would be replacing the window due to something about a washer being bent that has something to do the window mount. I have never even seen the window assembly so I really have no clear idea of what he was talking about. Sorry to be so long winded for so little real information.

There is a little more to the story about my relationship with this dealer pre window problem. But in the end they came thru.

And for the recored I can be a little high strung at times too. Just saying
