This was my little winter project. I call it my 1 of 1, Lol. I converted my 03 vert into a coupe. It has been done by a few guys, but I am going to a little more in depth with the project. Now we will all know exactly what it takes to create a coupe from a convertible. I know some will think I'm nuts, some will wonder why I just didn't buy a coupe, and the answere is....... I just love huge projects!!!!!! I learned a lot about the car during the project. Found that the manuals are very vague on coupe parts and pieces. Most of it is geared to the convertible. I am also trying to do this project with as many factory Dodge parts as I possibly can.
First a pic of where we will start from. My silver 03 vert. Love the car and have already done a few projects on it.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn30/dsg03vert/03%20Viper/621C9CFC-8D09-47B4-BD80-33B2D1691FB2_zpstzglgunn.jpg (http://s300.photobucket.com/user/dsg03vert/media/03%20Viper/621C9CFC-8D09-47B4-BD80-33B2D1691FB2_zpstzglgunn.jpg.html)
Now on to some of the parts that I collected over the winter. Here are the major pieces. Roof, hatch, rear bumper cover, both rear fenders, windshield surround, and the roll bar. Most were found on eBay.

Let the carnage begin.......

Awesome. Can't wait to see more. As many 03-04 cars that listed in the $30k range, you could make a case to buy it and convert it over a coupe.

Trunk, rear bumper cover, waterfall, and roll bars removed. Easy going so far. Taking stuff apart is always the easy part. I put all of my bolts in labeled bags for later. Makes it easier to know where they go.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn30/dsg03vert/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/E51BD581-2DC1-4BAF-831A-937275199CEF_zpsbp0bidhm.jpg (http://s300.photobucket.com/user/dsg03vert/media/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/E51BD581-2DC1-4BAF-831A-937275199CEF_zpsbp0bidhm.jpg.html)
Next was the side sills and quarter panels. The quarters were kind of a pain to remove. The factory uses black RTV to seal the quarters. There was tons of it in the sill and door edge area.

I removed the convertible roll bar mounts and replaced them with the coupe roll bar. The coupe one helps support the roof and hatch. It bolts up perfectly through the same mounting holes.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn30/dsg03vert/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/BC11C7BD-C584-4843-AFFC-13698819E180_zpssniztciw.jpg (http://s300.photobucket.com/user/dsg03vert/media/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/BC11C7BD-C584-4843-AFFC-13698819E180_zpssniztciw.jpg.html)
Time to test fit the roof and mark out the holes that need to be drilled. It lines up pretty well right out of the gate.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn30/dsg03vert/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/AD8B2545-7C6B-4DB4-97D5-30BF54048796_zpsksskccgw.jpg (http://s300.photobucket.com/user/dsg03vert/media/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/AD8B2545-7C6B-4DB4-97D5-30BF54048796_zpsksskccgw.jpg.html)
Off with the roof and time to make some holes.
I bought a coupe windshield surround to replace the convertible one. Upon close inspection I found a few cracks in it and decided to just use it as a research tool/template instead. It turns out that the convertible surround has a piece of gasket on it that is screwed on with inserts. The inserts line right up with the coupe holes. I drilled the inserts out, sent the bit straight through the bottom of the surround, and the used a hole saw to clearance it for the bolts. This is exactly how the coupe frame was designed. Hmmmmm, not bad so far.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn30/dsg03vert/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/4D387D08-706B-4C11-B662-BEAE94536F7B_zpserxkpts1.jpg (http://s300.photobucket.com/user/dsg03vert/media/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/4D387D08-706B-4C11-B662-BEAE94536F7B_zpserxkpts1.jpg.html)
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn30/dsg03vert/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/326B6F81-DB51-48F3-AEA4-7F5DD6F18259_zpskzzlquxs.jpg (http://s300.photobucket.com/user/dsg03vert/media/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/326B6F81-DB51-48F3-AEA4-7F5DD6F18259_zpskzzlquxs.jpg.html)
The back of the roof has 2 bolts that hold it down to the tub. One lines up with a rivet that I had to grind out, the other had to be drilled.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn30/dsg03vert/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/BD74A7EA-90C7-4F0B-AAEF-214A2C8B1AE7_zpshhrdprnw.jpg (http://s300.photobucket.com/user/dsg03vert/media/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/BD74A7EA-90C7-4F0B-AAEF-214A2C8B1AE7_zpshhrdprnw.jpg.html)
Lastly there was a piece of the tub right behind the drivers seat that interfered with the roof from sitting in its place. It holds the weatherstripping in place for the convertible. Through my vast research (pics on eBay from someone selling a coupe tub), I found out that the piece is not there on the coupe tub. So off it comes!!!

And I thought I was crazy when I put the coupe rear end on my vert! These Vipers are fun to work on for sure - good luck with the rest of the project.
If I remember correctly, you'll have a little more cutting to do on your trunk tub as you won't need that front portion that sticks up for the weatherstripping mount used on the vert?

Before the roof can go on the trunk needs to be trimmed. The coupe tub is missing the back wall that is on the convertible. I marked out the location when the top was on for the test fit. The bottom is cut along the top of the drop off.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn30/dsg03vert/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/1D0D9D9F-3E70-42B9-B9AE-8B1E040AB58B_zps53xslb29.jpg (http://s300.photobucket.com/user/dsg03vert/media/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/1D0D9D9F-3E70-42B9-B9AE-8B1E040AB58B_zps53xslb29.jpg.html)
There are also 2 holes on the back of the roof that get attached via 2 studs coming up from the tub. The convertible tub does not have them but there is a existing hole in that location. I removed two studs from the part of the tub that I cut off. They were there to hold the convertible top on. Good thing they are the same bolt size as what I needed. Just used a rivet to hold the stud flange in place.
Roof is back on and now fits nicely.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn30/dsg03vert/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/56690DB9-870D-4998-8DC4-58F63BCA21FE_zpsydb46z61.jpg (http://s300.photobucket.com/user/dsg03vert/media/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/56690DB9-870D-4998-8DC4-58F63BCA21FE_zpsydb46z61.jpg.html)
The fuel filler needs a different back piece to accept the aluminum fuel door. Easier to do now while the quarters are off.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn30/dsg03vert/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/4F4C3A90-1A6A-416C-BD18-3D2F9F940A51_zps8ju5mk12.jpg (http://s300.photobucket.com/user/dsg03vert/media/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/4F4C3A90-1A6A-416C-BD18-3D2F9F940A51_zps8ju5mk12.jpg.html)
Next the quarters go on for a test fit. They lock into the roof panel. I found it easier to mount them while the roof section is still loose.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn30/dsg03vert/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/DDA575A9-5C61-4F6B-99B2-081723664CCC_zpsebsqw640.jpg (http://s300.photobucket.com/user/dsg03vert/media/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/DDA575A9-5C61-4F6B-99B2-081723664CCC_zpsebsqw640.jpg.html)
Rear bumper cover is next. There are a few changes that need to happen in this area.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn30/dsg03vert/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/25ACF11D-BB9B-4342-9714-3C9E0DE27FE5_zps8ve0fxbv.jpg (http://s300.photobucket.com/user/dsg03vert/media/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/25ACF11D-BB9B-4342-9714-3C9E0DE27FE5_zps8ve0fxbv.jpg.html)
The foam that reinforces the coupe bumper cover are a little different than the convertible pieces. I changed them out to the coupe versions. They are not drastically different, but enough to make me buy the right ones.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn30/dsg03vert/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/AE6A98EB-0A73-4AEF-94AF-1A6EBB14D421_zpsuiaiqgsu.jpg (http://s300.photobucket.com/user/dsg03vert/media/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/AE6A98EB-0A73-4AEF-94AF-1A6EBB14D421_zpsuiaiqgsu.jpg.html)

There is a bracket that holds the rear lights on the convertible. They interfere with the install of the coupe lights. The brackets need to be removed. The holes also line up with the cover that goes on later.

Next we are on to hatch install. Pretty easy to put on. Just a large and heavy piece. Needed a little help lifting it on. As far as the wiring for it, that took a little extra work. I had to make my own harness for this one. I took the wiring harness out of my convertible trunk because this would plug into the factory body harness. I bought a set of weather pack connectors from Summit, put one end on the hatch and the other on my convertible trunk harness. Had to cross reference all of the color codes between the two years and add a wire from my courtesy light in the rear view for the hatch light. Now we are good to go. :)

The rear lighting was not bad. I bought a set of used coupe wiring harnesses which plugged right into the factory harness. Also bought a set of coupe tail lights. Found out they are the same from Gen2 all the way up to Gen4. The reverse light housing is the same as the convertible.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn30/dsg03vert/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/57E98133-EA31-4B2F-9DAD-38D0E12A232C_zpsoo9vlqby.jpg (http://s300.photobucket.com/user/dsg03vert/media/03%20Viper/coupe%20conversion/57E98133-EA31-4B2F-9DAD-38D0E12A232C_zpsoo9vlqby.jpg.html)
Now I had to wire those pesky rear side markers. The convertibles don't have them. In looking through the manuals, it looks like the wiring for these was in the main body harness. I had to improvise a little bit here too. I bought a set of factory connectors for the lights. Then I tied them into the coupe rear tail light harness to be on with the rear lights. I soldered the connections and heat shrank them. Now we are good to go (also made them led while I was at it).

Time to get on to the living space. Rear carpet goes in first. It is coupe specific and just drops right in. The convertible carpet works for the trunk area. To get the coupe specific waterfall in I had to pull out the drivers seat. Real easy to do on a viper. All four bolts come from above. The waterfall took some work to get it in the right position for install. Once that was good and bolted up, it was headliner time. That had to come in from the hatch area. It also took some twisting and light bending to get into place, but it made it damage free. I was worried about bending it. Picked up factory push pins to hold it up. I also found out that the coupe uses the same sun visers, but it gets a small trim piece around the mounting area. My dealer helped me acquire them. A pillar and B pillar covers are both coupe only items too.

The hardest part for the interior was trying to find the little springy wires that go to the rear defroster. No one at the dealer could find the part. I scoured eBay and I was going to modify a set from a wrecked Nissan. In the end I stumbled upon a website that sold a universal set with all the proper crimps. Winning!!!!!

The windows are a different shape on the coupe. (I overlaid them in the pic) I went to my local dealership and purchased a set of Dodge factory Windows. I didn't want a set of knockoffs. The stock Windows come out pretty easy. Take the door cover off, put the window up, then there are 2 bolts in the back and a clip in the front. That's it. I was worried about the window drop working right when the door handle is depressed. It worked just fine after running them through the regular learning process. :)
Of course the window regulator broke at the same time. I knew it was going, so I guess it was the perfect time while the door was open. :(

The rear of the car I got from a wrecked VOI car. It has the black racing stripes on them. My hood was already on the car before the transformation and was painted straight silver. I have bigger plans for the paint later, so for now I need something to make the car presentable. I found some vinyl racing stripes on eBay for $50. Why not, I'll give it a try. I think they came out great for my first time doing stripes. There are a few minor wrinkles that are hardly noticeable. Definately drive worthy.

Well done! Now you have options...sometimes a coupe and sometimes a vert. I guess when you sell it, you could give the buyer the option of either or...You may have the first hardtop vert around. Very Cool...

A little more difficult to reverse the process. Front wall for the trunk tub was cut down, tail light brackets were cut, holes drilled in trim above windshield. I think OP made a committment and he will probably stick with it. Also, selling the 'vert parts will help recover the some of the cost

I have been following this...Great work!...this is not a conversion for unskilled people...there are so many things that you run into that need to be addressed...it appears that you have done it right!
I also really like the look of the cars with hard roofs...truth be know...that is why I make hardtops...hopefully, still the best of both worlds for those that like to drive convertibles.

Man Gen 3/4 has such a sick side profile. I love the sharp angles mixed with curves.

It does look cool. Never seen a pure silver one, that I can think of. I wonder how it would look with a driver's stripe.

Apparently they made 3 solid silver coupes in 2010.
Car looks awesome with the stripe delete.

This should be moved to the "how to" in my opinion.
I vote for thread of the year!
By the way, it's nonsense we don't have a thread of the year poll going.

Beautiful conversion. I want both... Coupe and Convertible..... wish there was an easy way to go back and forth from convertible to coupe... I prefer the convertible rear (I know I am in a minority)... there was a company that was supposedly making a roof and hatch that would bolt onto a 2006 convertible...to keep the rear line of the convertible but get the top and hatch...... I have the ability to do this conversion, but it appears to be irreversible?

I have been following this...Great work!...this is not a conversion for unskilled people...there are so many things that you run into that need to be addressed...it appears that you have done it right!
I also really like the look of the cars with hard roofs...truth be know...that is why I make hardtops...hopefully, still the best of both worlds for those that like to drive convertibles.

Fantastic job on the conversion! Would love to do that to mine, but no skills for that! I have a hardtop on the way, it will be my bootleg coupe! Great job though!

Good job man! Bullseye.
Before I bought my gen2 I was very much looking at 03-04 cars and wanted to buy the car and a hardtop kit at the same time. The tops just never seemed to turn up for me.
Enjoy the car, that's a real head Turner.

I'm sorry that my first post is to bring a post back from the dead. But I am doing this exact conversion on my Viper and I was wondering how to safely remove the convertible top.
Thank you.

If you are doing this conversion and cant figure out the first step (lol) you might want to reconsider doing this one yourself. ;)

Lol I've already removed everything down to the 6 hinge bolts and 12 or so nuts along the edge of the top that I could see, I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything as I don't want to damage the top.

I think it was stuck down with a double stick tape along with the bolts. I can look at some of my parts tonight.

Thank you very much for the helpful response! I was thinking that may be the case.
