IHOP,
I've had the second one (Gripper) in my Gen 4 and Gen 5, I love it! I've also bought 3 more as gifts for other Viper owners.

That would have been great a few weeks ago, I was looking to do the exact same thing. How much does it cost, and how far have you cut one so far? Any pics?

I'm considering a gen 4 knob shaft assembly. The stock Gen 5 is to low for my liking.

I had the Gripper in my Gen3 just because it was the only thing available I could find to shorten that gigantic stock shifter. But round shift knobs are ugly, lame as phuk, and not ergonomically useful. Then I found out about the race knob in the top picture, and made sure I got that one for the GenV. Love it!! Shortened it up a nice amount, and it fits in your hand the way it is supposed to.
Got both from MGW. It used to be www.mgwltd.com But I'm not sure they carry any of the Viper stuff anymore. I just wanted the shift knob and didn't care what logo was on it. So I had to phone in and they got one out to me with just a basic 6 speed H-Pattern on top.

Is this still the best place to buy the shifter that is pictured in the original post on the top? https://theviperstore.com/Viper5_Products_Performance_Shifters_More.htm

It is the ONLY place to buy that shifter/knob. The original manufacturer was MGW. They eventually discontinued their viper products and the viper store bought all of their stock and raised the price. They are limited to how many they have left. Also, MGW makes excellent products. Really good engineering shop implementing shifting solutions for American cars.
I've used MGW I think for like 20 years, I don't know when they were founded, but I swear I had to one of their 1st clients, lol.
I've had their stuff in like 10 mustangs and 4 vipers. Top quality, real shame they gave up on viper. That TWM option posted above looks interesting.
I've tried probably 5 styles of shifter handles and the ball-gripper is number one in my book.
I was a dedicated drag strip guy, 5.0 shootout, etc., and so I do the elbow-out 3rd gear technique and the ball is the only handle I find allows me to position my hand in the 3 different ways I place it for shifting 1 to 2, 2 to 3, and downshifts. I don't get the 'stick' type, I've tried that one and it lasted a month and I pulled it, it forces your hand into a position vs the ball which accommodates any place of the fingers and palm, for open track events and drag strip duty. Just my opinion, I run a ball on my road race car as well for the same reason. I do have XL hands so not sure if that's a factor .. as much as it is in running for the presidency any way.

It is shorter, so less "throw" than stock. It feels better when going through the gears quickly.

3" is what you want than purchase any 1/2"-20 shift knob. I'm using the 3" with a 20mm diameter round plastic knob. It's much easier to use over stock for track use.

Gen 5. I basically need at least an inch more height than the stock shifter and I would prefer a pistol grip knob rather than a ball.
I like Mr. Norm's shifters: 25272 Too flashy for my taste, but functional.

Since IPSCO makes lowering kits (http://www.ipsco.org/Viper_files/Shifter%20lowering%20Kits.htm), perhaps they would make you one for raising your shifter knob. I don't know if Mark does special requests.

Yes but the stock shifter ball is made into the steel shaft and not removable. If you like the stock knob just order the 1 1/4" extension from IPSCO. The threads of the stock shifter are 1/2"-20. The extension threads at top and bottom are the same, 1/2"-20.

Apologies to the OP - not trying to hijack this thread, but I continued my research into competition shifters.
So far I found two combos that may work (thanks go out to all the folks that provided me with links):
1. "Shifter Knob Adapter" ($135) http://www.shop.viperpartsusa.com/Shifter-Knob-Adapter-220-353-200-00.htm with Sneed 4 Speed T56 shifter knob ($106) http://www.sneed4speed.com/t56-shift-knob/. There is also a shorter version of the adapter for $33 from Viper Parts Rack: http://www.viperpartsrack.com/shift-adapter?keyword=shifter
2. TW Performance Competition Shift knob ($15 for 4" height, $137 for 7" height), they claim it already comes with an adapter from 1/2-20 to whatever TW shifter uses, AND it allows for height adjustment: https://www.twmperformance.com/shift-knobs/competition-series-shift-knob
Both shifters are knurled.
What do you guys think? Again, I dont care what it looks like, I care about not missing gears in the heat of the moment.

I got one for my Gen2 in Red with Black lettering and Sneaky Pete. I'm going to have to get a small extension since mounting it straight to the shaft leaves the replacement ball quite low. I don't mind that much but you lose a lot of leverage and quick shifting becomes a little more difficult. I may have to just break down and get the IPSCO shifter now.

6 speed pattern (like factory), exterior finish modified, MGW barrel style here as I cannot stand ball style knobs. It is awesome. To the question of hand/wrist position with the barrel style, if you are truly rowing gears for spirited driving or dragging, 4th gear should be the only one you need to change position on. 1-2, 2-3 can all be the "holding a beer can position" to "no grip palm contact on front side of the barrel to push it backwards" from 3rd to 4th, or "hand upside down holding a beer can position (hand flipped over, thumb on rear side of the barrel, other fingers front side)" from 3rd to 4th gear. I use the same shift grip style on my 03 Terminator (factory leather knob, Magnum T56 transmission)

I finally had a chance to install the speeddawg knob and ipsco 2” shaft. With the 2” shaft+ extra jam nut you’re damn close to the original length/height of the original setup. A few notes: my speeddawg knob had some overflow epoxy (used to join the knob to the brass threads) that was keeping the knob from screwing down sufficiently into the shaft. A quick 30 second fix with a dremmel. Also, as others have stated, the jam nut on the stock setup is shockingly tight, so be prepared to use some gusto. Finally, also as noted by others, the trim clip to the left of the knob wants to stay with the tunnel and not the trim. Mine did and then proceeded to fall down into the tunnel. If yours does the same, some gentle prying at the edge of the tunnel where the trim meets the carpet should allow the clip to fall out. 3434934350

Admittedly, I wasn't paying super close attention and it's hard to absolutely confirm in this pic, but I believe the shift boot is glued to the underside of the trim. Glued, and of an odd shape underneath. I've never seen an alcantera aftermarket boot, but I can't see it being too tough to cut out the original and have a local interior shop stitch together a new, alcantera one for you.

Seeing a few threads about shift knobs but nothing about actual aftermarket shifters for gen 5 vipers. Is there such an animal or are our shifters not worth updating?

The Gen 5 shifter is really that much a step up that there hasn't been a need. They are very accurate.
IIRC, they may have been redesigned to make them lower, and were improved along the way....

Interesting, just surprises me since we always see aftermarket parts for these trans's regardless.

Was any extra hardware required to get this shifter to sit that low?

No.
I actually had to get an IPSCO "lowering" fitting to actually raise mine up a little in a Gen IV with the MGW Shifter.

Anyone have instructions on removing the center console to get to the shifter. You have to get down below where the shifter stick mounts and to do that you have to remove some of the center console on a Gen V as per IPSCO. I searched and came up empty.
I just slid the boot down the shaft of the oem shifter. It was fast and easy to remove and install my Ipsco lowering shaft and speeddawg knob.

For anyone with the MGW "Barrel Grip" / "Gripper" knob - Does anyone have the measurements? (height, width, weight) I looked around a bit and aren't seeing them anywhere.

Can totally appreciate it, but definitely still would like to grab measurements from someone if possible. ;)

After a lot of playing around, I ended up with the shortest bolt from IPSCO with a stock Gen3/4 knob. Looks 100% factory but looses the dampener. There is even more precise feel. I swear I can feel sync rows spin up and teeth engage.

I love it when folks curse with proper punctuation. :)
